Still would have preferred a member of ME2 team to him on squad.
His pitiful 'i never get picked line' did move me to some sympathy though.
So i don't hate him, sort of very mildly fond(like Jacob in ME2)

He was a decent guy to begin with. Most the hate is over the fact a lot of people wanted to see so many other ME2 characters in his spot.

lol Ashley was the one that said that for me in my playthrough.
Honestly the cutest thing ever. I really liked her in my first playthrough of ME1 way back but in ME3 it was just.. eh, besides when she almost died on Mars. Didn't even get any good talking scenes on Normandy.. and I thought I'd be excited about her new look but actually kinda missed the old one. But yeah when she said that it was the first playful thing she said in awhile so I loved it.

James got everyone pizza so yeah.. love pizza, he's cool with me.  And they added a reference from Paragon Lost so that was cool

His characteristics define him as a dishonest wet noodle.

Maybe the places we grew up in are differant, but I was raised that laughing at a joke that you don't get is rude and dishonest.

If I find out a "friend" of mine has only been a friend just cause I usually stop being friends with them. Javik is funny be he's a heartless SOB who I would want nothing to do with. Joker is generally loyal and honest but suffers from immaturity issues and toilet humor. Tali is loyal, sincere, and relatively mature but has emotional family issues.

These three characters are like night and day from each other. I don't like Javik, and I don't like Tali. I respect them both, but not particularly like. I like joker, and respect him. I would hang out with him.

Vega likes them all and would hang out with them all? BS...he's pandering, and I can't stand it. It also drives me effing crazy that his response to deep, thoughtful questions is "Yeah, I get that."

No, you don't get that, or you'd actually say something. That's such a cop out.

Can't stand Vega. He's a meathead d-bag whose parents never taught him how to be honest with people.

Well, I guess it all depends on how you are raised and who you grew up with.

A lot of my friends I have nothing in common with, and we have completely conflicting personalities. I like pretty much every crew member in the ME trilogy (with the exception of Jack, but that's because of her arrogance).

I always liked James. The only thing that keeps me from using him much is his lack of history with Shepard. He was designed for new players to bring around so that they could be filled-in on events through him.

I'm playing through ME1 now and those characters... man. BioWare has come a long way -- that's all I'll say.

I was skeptical about Vega before the game launched, but quickly liked him during my first playthrough. Vega is a very believable character, for me. He was brilliantly acted by Mr. Prinze. Vega seems like the kind of guy I'd hang out with in real life. It would be a comical sight, since he looks to have about 80 lbs of muscle on me, but there's more to James than the muscles. He seems like he'd be a loyal, reliable friend, in my opinion.

I don't try to understand the various BSN views on the series' characters. Each character has their supporters and detractors. The good thing is that most of us have our favorites that keep us coming back to these games.

I liked Vega. A solid squaddie who I usually end up using quite a bit, since I never play soldiers and tend to sacrifice Ash on Virmire. He's a better character than his 'Jersey Shore' or whatever appearance would suggest, and the voice acting is very high standard.

I was under the impression that most people liked James to begin with.

Sure, everyone hated him when he was first announced and we knew nothing about him except that he was a beefy bloke that wasn't krogan. This meant that on the Bioware Fandom Popularity Matrix, he ranked just above Jacob and just below an eggy dog turd. The thing is, once the game actually came out and we saw that he was really just a loveable dimwit who got on well with everyone and was handy in combat, the general opinion changed. If I recall correctly, a lot of people were upset that he wasn't a possible love interest, which is telling.

I attribute a lot of that to his voice actor. Freddie Prinze Jr is a fanboy of the series and that comes across well in his performance where (most of the time anyway) it feels like he's having the time of his life. That makes him hard to dislike even when he is just being the stereotypical jarhead that people are against.

Never disliked him. He's the only one of Mass Effect's starting male squadmates that isn't a complete bore, IMO.

My only issue with him is that I wish he was around in an earlier game. He's a great character, but the victim of poor placement in the final chapter of the story. He feels far more real than say, Jacob or the VS in ME2 or ME1.

Imo, there really is no problem with him, the only problem is how they chose to introduce him to us. Which is really more of a problem with the whole intro sequence of the game.

I watched Paragon Lost. Trust me. He earned it.

nope, never liked him and never will. waste of squad space. so is EDI. Thane didn't bring anything to the table either, he's just an average biotic.

I don't dislike him, I just don't find him particularly interesting.

He suffers from there always being a guy from ME2 that you'd rather have.
