I ended up really liking James. I took him on nearly every mission with one of my Sheps and some of his comments/reactions are just hilarious... his VA did a great job making him real and likeable. His banter with Cortez was great, too. I ended up almost wishing he WAS a real LI.

When did we start hating Vega?

I don't hate the character. I just hate what he represents (taking a spot off the squad from one of our past squaddies).

Love James.

First time I saw him in a screenshot next to Kaidan though, I laughed and I couldn't beleive that we would see such a stereotypical character in a ME game.

But seeing that my Femshep is an Adept and I never keep Ashley in ME1, I ended up using him quite a lot in combat (until Kaidan came back) and I was pleasantly surprised. He made me smile more than once during missions ("Where's the Batarian? Where's the Krogan? Where's the meat?!" LOL!) and he proved to be a very solid squadmate, only dying on me once (and that was my fault because my Shep acted like a big chicken when it happened).

I also did all the convos with him, including the one where he speaks a little more about his background and I found him to be funny and awesome. I'm also among the few who would have loved to have him as an LI option for Femshep.

He pales in comparison to most of the other characters, particularly the characters from 2. I mean, he's fine, but he's such an overblown caricature of your generic soldier that he just ends up not having much substance.

You obviously haven't taken him on missions.

I've taken him on missions. He's funny, does fairly well in combat, and the voice actor does a great job, but I still think he's a pretty flat character. He just seems kind of useless as a replacement for the characters from ME2. I don't hate him, but I don't really like him either.

There was a quote I saw floating around, and I want to know if it's true. On the ladder scene in the Citadel Vault, James has a chance of saying

"Yea! You mess with Shepard, you mess with us! Unless we're on a ladder."

Is that true? Cause if so, it's AWESOME!

The funny thing is is that whenever a new character is introduced into a series I like I generally don't start hating them because they aren't someone else.

When I'm given a character I try to see them for the intent that they were created. I don't hate Jacob for example because he is normal and boring. I like him and his sense of justice, and I like his battle quotes in Mass Effect 2.

Vega is a top quality Alliance soldier that was added to Shepard's crew because he was top quality. I started gaining respect for him and his will to do whatever it takes when he crashed into the shuttle on Mars. Risks his life to stop Cerberus. Then his conversations on Minae. He's a total bro along with Zaeed, Mordin, Garrus and Grunt in my book.

Also he saves the day in the Citadel DLC if Wrex is dead. Cool stuff.

Yes. Or, at least if you don't like him at this point, you never will.

I loved Vega the moment I actually played ME3.

I was indifferent before launch. After launch I liked him. He's permanently in my party until I get Kaidan back.

Only thing I dislike about him is the auto-flirting with FemShep. I wish Garrus would have knocked his teeth out.

Let's be honest, my main discomfort upon meeting Vega was the assumption that accepting his "Lola" thing meant that he's an LI. I was afraid I'd accidentally LI him :-)

The pull-up's scene at the beginning of the game put me off the character because it reminded me of Shepard going "Just... talking, for a while" with Jacob in ME2;

And I was like... "ohh... come on, not... the prrriiizzzzeeee again!"

But I got to admit, setting my fear of being emasculated aside, ( thanks in no small part to knowing that he's not an LI :D ) getting back to ME3 this year, Vega grew on me. I have nothing against the guy; he's one of us, he does his thing, he's an awesome soldier -- I don't need him to bedazzle me with awesome personality and whatever backstory. There's more than enough going on for him to prove his worth right now.

Seriously, Ashley, James and me, Full Soldiers with Bonus Carnage totally tear apart the battlefield. Literally. Cerberus troops get mailed in, and would explode before their feet touch the ground. Soooo satisfying.

Still, only discovering today what happens when James takes down the AA gun on Rannoch. Pricelessly hilarious. Can't stop laughing; I officially like the Loco :D

Before this thread might get shut down because it's being necro'ed, I love James! (Not if anyone would've known when seeing my avatar, haha)

While I quickly liked him when I initially played ME3 for the 1st and 2nd time earlier this year (late to the party), he completely crept into my heart over the last couple months and his banter is just amazing. I want to record most of his dialogue and I regularly have fits of laughing and giggling during that, this man is just awesome :)

The "tech expert" on Rannoch is one of the best scenes, but there are so many. His VA Freddie Prinze Jr. really did a damn great job, fits Vega's character perfectly imo.

I like him a whole lot. He appears to just be the normal meathead soldier at first, but when you factor in his background and the situation he's in, he becomes a lot more interesting.

Specifically, the fact that he sacrificed people he knew and cared about in exchange for data that could be extremely tactically significant. And then Shepard destroyed the Collectors, making the loss of Vega's friends worthless. He's got to have some anger directed towards Shepard there, but... Shepard is also a hero, and the best chance that Earth has to survive. Vega might be angry at Shep, but he needs to trust Shepard. That uneasy alliance is shown fairly well in the fight scene, IMHO.

He's basically the closest thing to a Batarian squadmate we get, not counting Javik.

I felt the same, that there's some tension going on, it's why I really love the Renegade sparring. It feels like they've somewhat cleared the air afterwards.

And while I'm sure James and Shepard already got along during the time when Shepard's in the brig and James might've managed to put his issues aside, they boil up during the sparring.

It really fits with what Mac Walters said in a tweet, that James used to idolize Shepard... once.

It's funny because he startled me at first with the Lola thing, as well. I was at first quite unhappy about all the flirting, but I didn't dislike him for it. I was just afraid I was getting ninjamanced since I already had a romance going. I was glad to find out he was just messing around and there was no romance getting triggered. I still forbid him to call my main Shepard Lola because I don't really like it in her case and, you know, what I like about him is that he respects it. He gets a bit offended at first, but he never does it again, not even to troll Shepard, and I think that's cool. He still messes around, jerk, but it's probably not as bad as when you're less strict with him, lol.

The Lola thing aside, I've never really had a problem with James and I very soon grew to like him when I first started playing. I really like the fact that he might look all big and intimidating at first (Well, he never actually did to me, but he's a big, big man.) but he's, in fact, a sweetheart and a very normal person. On the Normandy, we're surrounded by brilliant people with different talents like techs and biotics and prodigies and who knows what else and then there's James. James is not stupid by any stretch of imagination. He's just normal. Human. Relatable. I like that. There are moments I really like with him, like the first time on the Citadel where he's upset about people pretending like nothing's happening. Or the dialogue where he asks Shepard whether he should enter the N7 program. Or the scene in Leviathan with Ann where he gives her the look and says, "I'll be right here." He's a good kid.

I generally really like his relationship with Shepard. It always seemed to me they had a relaxed and friendly relationship most of the time, despite him being her subordinate, and while he's not the most disciplined person outside combat, I always feel like James is somebody that Shepard can rely on and always have him under control. He has a lot he could potentially hold against Shepard, but I never felt any hostility out of him.

Also, he's just a lot of fun to take on missions because his comments are hilarious. I always laugh through Tuchanka with him yelling behind me, "ARE WE REALLY DOING THIS?!" His voice actor did a remarkable job.

TL;DR: James is my little bro.

Aww, I've never actually been able to bring myself to give him a nosebleed.

Sure, sign me up. How could you not love the guy who has a Volus deliver a pepperoni pizza to a conspirative briefing in Shep's apartment. :D

Seriously though, I think BW did a wonderful job with Vega. As many others, I was very skeptical when I first heard about him because there are so many ways you can get the "new guy" wrong but they did everything right with this guy. Freddie Prinze Jr. does his part to make him fit in with the rest of the bunch just fine. Goes to show that BW is among the top tier when it comes to character writing.

Aww, I've never actually been able to bring myself to give him a nosebleed.

I used to be like that, I've played two MSheps before and never went Renegade on him, but my current FemShep is the mission first type as well and she told James he made the right choice and that she would've done the same. Loving his reaction there.

For the rest of your post I strongly agree, except I was kinda sad he's not romanceable, though it makes perfect sense. I think they actually had something planned with him initially and then ran out of time, because I found some leaked dialogue from the FOB in London in his old thread where it was clear that the flirting between those two was "something more", but James is way too serious about the military rules. BW plays on that some more in the Citadel DLC.

To me, all there is to say about James is he's a big guy with a big mouth, but an even bigger heart :)

I can totally understand being disappointed by him not being romanceable. James is a genuinely sweet guy. Pretty cute, too. I don't really mind, personally, as I enjoy him greatly as just a friend and I understand if they happened to think it fit him better, but I don't blame you at all. Falling for an unromanceable character must be torture, heh.

I could actually believe that there might have been plans for it because there aren't many proper romances for femShep in ME3. It's a shame if that was scrapped.

The renegade dialogue actually sounds great, then. I only watched the renegade sparring in a video and I don't remember liking it that much, but maybe it just played out differently. Either that or I guess the shock from him getting hit in the face took precedence. Because, despite him probably being like at least half a metre taller than me, I must protect him.  One day... I'll gather my guts and go full renegade... unless I chicken out.  :P

I'm actually not that disappointed (but you should see the posts in his old thread... poor guys in there were all planning on romancing him :(), in fact I quite like it, but only because apparently I like to make my FemShep feel as miserable as possible until after the ending, ahaha :D

Yeah, I think another big sign that they wanted to go at least a bit somewhere with him is that they build up the flirting so nicely, and then... nothing  I like to imagine that it would be some sort of fling, but James being too intimidated and too much tied down by fraternization rules to have a real go at Shepard (so basically what they did with Citadel DLC ;)).

I guess it all depends how you play your Shepard. If you ever play a mission first Shepard this is the perfect way to go. Doesn't even have to be full Renegade, I'm pretty much balanced right now. And honestly I've done things in my current playthrough I never thought I could do, but it makes her story so interesting to me and I enjoy it so much more than my previous runs. So you could try to go for it :)

(Damn, this is getting off-topic fast :D I should really PM you, also about the ending stuff... I will later or tomorrow)

Thought I'd throw my 2 cents in.

The Citadel romance for James is actually something I hate with a fiery passion, despite wanting James to be romanceable. And here's why.

When Shepard urged Jack towards a romance, it was described by many on the forums as "rapey". Having played out that romance... yeah, I see that, honestly. Shepard's a fair bit creepy there, and Jack's clearly uncomfortable with most of the thing.

But Femshep coerces Vega into getting drunk and having sex with her. That's fairly textbook sexual predator material, and judging by James's reactions both before and after the act, he's not exactly comfortable with how things happened. The entire "romance" smacks of coercive, drug-assisted rape, and yet I've seen no one else raise this point.
