just curious, do you think Platinum matches are actually fun?

i never played platinum games before this weekend challenge, and it was exactly like what i thought it would be ( a DPS, kiting, rezfest circus event)  which is why i never played them.  it seems to a hodgepodge of all your most hated enemies amped up on meth with massive resistance to damage and lvl XXX weapons.   And since i pug'd everything but collectors, it was at times a complete nightmare. so,i'd like to publicly thank my friends for helping with the the collectors extraction, bcuz there's pretty much no way i could have pug'd that one.

while there is a certain amount of satifaction with being able to do well in and actually complete a platinum match,  i can honestly say it wasnt fun for me and i dont plan on  playing them again anytime soon.

and finally one of my epic fail moments of this challenge,  Wave 10 i think it was Carebears: over the mic i hear, its all up to you, we're all down. i'm kiting some goons, and round a corner in the terminal room on Giant. and get oneshoted by an invisbad phantom. no more gels. gameover

i will stick to Gold and silver, so what are your thoughts on Platinum.

I like it... but only with competent teams.

By contrast... Gold with competent teams F'n sucks... b/c there isn't enough to kill. Gold is better with one "good" friend and a couple scrub randoms... b/c then there's plenty to kill.

As, megabeast said, yes with a good team who know what they are doing. But Gold I find more consistently fun with randoms - they are the meat shield and I get to kill stuff.

They can be.
I'm no pro, but I'm good enough that if my whole team is as good or better than me gold is kind of a joke
Platnium makes the game kinda challenging again with a team like that.

I like gold, it's challenging and I can (mostly) hold my own. Platinum is insane, I can't muster the enthusiasm to play it. I do, however, like watching vids of competent teams playing platinum as they are entertaining and elucidating.

Hell no

Easy credits with a good team, sure. Okay, maybe it's fun on a select, few elite classes. The rest? Not so much.

My motto: Stick to gold for fun, Platinum for credits.

I hadn't played Platinum before this event. I PUG'ed all of them and got 4 extractions in the first 5 games I played. This was a few hours after the operation began. I tried a few more Platinum games later on. I got only 2 extractions in 5 games played, with me left alone to clutch later waves (6 onwards); I simply ran out of patience. I'd say team composition matters greatly, unless you're used to this difficulty.

Platinum is exactly as you described, a DPS fest and perhaps to be approached as such. It is not as fun as Gold for me, which I what I play exclusively. It only makes sense to me to play this difficultly if I wanted to get credits fast.

Does anyone else agree that we should of got the Banner for completing the Insanity challenge and not for the weakling normal mode? All that hard work and nothing to show for it.

That is not correct.

I stopped playing Plat shortly after it came out because I didn't enjoy the burn mentality of the gameplay at that difficulty level.  Just a frenetic mass of missile/grenade spam for the most part where I felt Gold allowed for more tactical play.  Granted, I stopped Gold shortly after that as well due to annoyance with the Store Lottery System and have only really started playing those difficulties again this weekend.

I pretty much exclusively pug. Did my first platinum matches this last week and was pretty successful (5 matches to get the challenge, only lost 1 match 'cause I got dropped in a Collector box game), but found them all boring and painful. Somewhere between gold and silver is the butter zone for pugs.

I see you're on PC as well. I suspect it's significantly harder for us due to the FPS bug.

Agreed with megabeast. If you have a good team, it is as much fun as Gold. If not, however...

Gold is fun, Platinum is a chore.

My wish for Platinum would have been for an ultimate horde mode: tons and tons of enemies in huge waves, not necessarily just boss spam. Could have been epic.

Like life, it`s what you make it and our attitude going in, depends on the team as well to a certain point. During this operation I have helped 53 players of all levels and skills, crap happens in waves, I never panic, laugh it off and get back on the horse, some go off the deep end but that is not going to give players encouragement.

Some worry about their score, it doesn`t matter as long as you are killing something, one guy from here played a level 6 Krogan, it`s what he had with low level weapons, I put a team in place that would ensure we went through, we carried some, on par with some, played with many better than I, at the end of the day, yes I had fun in all but one lobby I was asked to join.

The lobby I ended up leaving, I will play a kit I think the team needs, when I am told what to play because we are going to be behind a wall spamming slash, no that is not fun I move on.

All in all it has been beyond fun, players first time, hearing what they received as a promo weapon or as they bought packs after a game and unlocked something they wanted, to me that was tremendous fun to hear the excitement.

When crap happens in a wave and a solid silver player finished a wave off, that makes me smile, I knew they could do it and calmly talked them through, the more comfortable a player is in a level, the better they will perform, IMHO.

Now for me, I will kick back in gold for a while, do the odd platinum if someone needs credits, help etc.

Obviously you get a commendation pack, but you would get one of them for any easy challenge eg last weeks pointless extract with a new character challenge. My point being its the first time we have had any sort of platinum challenge(that I remember, all others being optional difficulty), and you would think the Banner reward would be for doing that part of the challenge, badge of honour if you like!

I too never ventured into Plat before this weekend op. While I was positively exuberant when I finally got my last Plat/Collector match done, I felt like I could go back and have fun in the game again... But probably only in silver (where I came from) and maybe more gold matches.

Don't get me wrong: This op showed me I could handle the tougher stuff (in some degree), and I'm grateful. But I don't think I'll ever venture into Platinum again for a long, long time. I was playing my jack-of-all-trades Turian Sentinel and tried to be as much of an asset to my team. It's just far too stressful for little ol' me for a regular basis.

Pretty much Mega has it summed up. Gold is trivial if you have four people who can kill quickly and are competitive sc0rewh0res like myself. You just about have to step it up to Platinum if Gold is too easy.

I do find Gold to be the most fun if everything is laid back though.

I love speed running through platinums, nothing beats 150K creds in 12-15min. I do hate collectors platinum but only because of the PS3 freezing issues. Also a biotic squad with a novaguard is fun as hell on platinum.

It's a bit boring. Just a boss spam.
