Thanks for that link, Grond0.

I've been having a blast playing my human (pure) Ranger (and reading up on the AD&D rules!). But I've been reading other forums, and now I wish I'd picked the Half-elven Ranger/Cleric multi-class from the start. I know I can dual-class into a Cleric later on with my current human Ranger, but I've read that the multi-classed version is a much better offensive class. And I'm not sure how I feel about starting my BG2 game with a lvl. 1 Cleric...

So here's the thing: I really don't want to start over but my character is still lvl. 1 (boy, does it take forever to level up!) I've installed the Shadowkeeper tool and had a look around in it... would it be possible to change the race to Half-elven and then change it to the Ranger/Cleric multiclass without breaking the game? I'm really tempted to do so... Since I haven't gained any levels, experience points, skills, etc., it should be fine, no? I reckon I'd also have to change the weapon proficiencies since the Cleric class cannot use blade weapons.

You could change your class, but are you sure you want to? The cleric/ranger is a potentially powerful class, but it's much harder to play and is likely to die at least as easily as a ranger would. Do you appreciate that the clerical restrictions on weapons mean that you couldn't use a bow (which I seem to remember you were keen on)?

One reason for Grondo0's doubts will be the fact that your experience points are divided into two classes so you level up even more slowly. At the beginning of the game, due to your cleric spells, the game will be easier, but then it becomes more difficult with the cleric/ranger due to the slowness in levelling up.

If it were not for the fact that you are in the no spoilers allowed section, I would give you some tips for getting some quick experience points and cheap plate armour near the beginning of the game.

Such information makes the game easier, but at the cost of not having the satisfaction of learning these things for yourself.

There is no one optimum "occupation" type to play BG2. It's more a matter of what type of role you enjoy playing in these games: melee fighter, magic user or thief? Surround yourself with a full party with a maximum variety of skills and enjoy the ride. Some of the strategy comments in the forums reflect either someone trying to super optimize their next run after having played a few dozen times, or reflect a ultra focused playing style - say, concentrating on invisible backstabbing - that you might not be interested in. All sorts of parties have been used to beat the game (6 bards, 6 paladins, etc.) and they all can work if you are skilled enough, but on a first run it's usually best to keep it simple.
I have played a non-human R-C thru SoA and ToB and it is a powerful combo, but, to me, not as much fun as a more vulnerable character, such as a Swashbuckler.

Aye, thanks for the advice. I shall stick to my current class for this playthrough. Besides, not being able to use bows and/or swords just kills it for me.

Gotta say, I'm having such a blast playing the game, esp. with my Ranger. Love scouting ahead of the party with Stealth, and I either end up outright killing all enemies or do a hit-and-run and lead them to an ambush by the rest of my party.

So I'm at the part where I rescued Dynaheir and my party consists of Minsc, Khalid, Jaheira, and Kivan. The problem is, I don't know who to drop! I'm in serious need of a mage (Half of my characters' inventory is filled with scrolls which I've saved up for a mage to come along!) so I need Dynaheir. Besides, I'm willing to bet if I drop Dynaheir, Minsc will also go with her...and I like Minsc. Jaheira/Khalid are kinda annoying but I wanna keep them as they seem directly tied to the story (I still haven't been to the Nashkel mines). Kivan is awesome, and I still have to do his quest for vengeance. You know, as soon as I recruited him, I actually thought of role-playing an all Ranger party. "If thou art in haste, remember the paths of the dead."

The last time I dropped a party member, they ended up leaving me for good (Xzar/Montaron). Though when I dropped Garrick, he was at the same spot willing to rejoin me.

So my question is: if I drop someone right now, can I take them back later on? How does the party system work? Will the dropped characters always be at the same spot?

You've only mentioned 4 other characters in your party... I presume you have Imoen with you too?

I'd drop Kivan if I were you. He's a great archer but he does exactly the same thing as your main character. A well balanced party needs a mage, a cleric or druid, and a thief in addition to a couple of fighter types so Kivan is the only one you can lose without losing some key skills.

I think it depends upon individual characters whether or not they will hang around if dropped. Some do, some don't.

Behaviour of dropped characters also depends on your reputation. Evil characters don't like it when the party's reputation is high. They won't actually leave your party unless it goes above 18, but if you boot them out they'll depart for good with reputation less than that (I think 16 or above). There is similar behaviour with good characters and low reputation; neutral characters also dislike very low reputation (more than high reputation for some reason).

In BG1 they stay put; in BG2 you usually have the option to ask the "dropee" to meet you later at your favorite Inn. If you drop Kivan, you might think about adding a Cleric.

If you want an easy way to (sort of) to level up, you can begin the game with the tutorial. Then after a certain attack outside of Candlekeep, head directly south to Beregost. In a certain Beregost Inn, you can get some experience points to help you level up. Also, remember that you can recruit Xzar and Edwin at a certain point. If you drop these two, they'll leave you for good as they're both scripted as 'evil'.

As for Jaheira, I always have her memorize healing spells and entangle at the beginning. Entangle is great for those pesky blue little monsters. Now that you have Dynaheir, remember that you can let her learn spell by rightclicking at them and choosing read. This means Dynaheir now has a chance to learn the spells. A litlle tip: If Dynhaheir doesn't learn the spell, be sure to hit the Q/quicksave key before letting Dynaheir read scrolls. That way you can try as many time as you like untill she has learned the spells. Another option is to let her, Dynaheir, that is, drink one-two potions of Intelligence, each raising her intelligence by 3 points.

I'd also drop Kivan, and go in search of a Thief. If you didn't take Imoen with you, you can head back to Candlekeep and her get her. Or you can travel to Baldur's Gate (the city....) and pick up Jan.
Have you been to the the Nashkell mines yet? Because, in those, you definitely need a thief.
Remember that thieves also are a great for picking locked chests and picking traps. (and there's lots of traps in both the Naskhell and Cloudkill mines....)

If you drop say Kivan at a certain spot in the game, he'll be waiting at this spot for you. The problem with this is that you'll need to travel all the way back to the spot where you dropped them to get him back in your party again. That's probably why Bioware made it so that dropped characters in BG2 goes to a certain Inn in BG2.

There are mods that allow you to meet up again at a more convenient location, usually the Friendly Arms Inn, but you usually have the choice of there, or where you are currently situated. Sometimes where you are currently situated is not an option. You will understand why later. I think that SCS is one mod that allows you to meet at an inn and BG1 NPC Project is the other. I would heartily recommend BG1 NPC Project as it doesn't change the difficulty so much as fleshes out the character of your party members.

Khalid/Jaheira & Minsc/Dynaheir are matched pairs, if you remove one the other goes too.

Unless ..

You can go into a house with Khalid, remove him from the party, and stealth/duck out the door. Or you can make him run into fights wearing a loin cloth, then remove his corpse from the party. Some people think this is the best part of the game. Not me of course. OK perhaps a little.

So Khalid ended up dying while facing down this extremely powerful ogre mage in Firewine Ruins and I just let it be. At least this way, I can keep Jaheira and can add someone else in my party.

But I absolutely loathe the alignment system. Seriously. I have Branwen in my party and she's awesome and everything, but I can't stand her "Our actions are not those of warrior born" every time I save a child or do some good deed. Same with Jaheira's " I do not like the way this group is turning out. Better leadership may help. At first, I thought it had to with me getting her husband killed, but I did a search and it's because my reputation is 20 and they're both neutral characters. It sucks that you can't even roll a party of good/evil characters without them attacking each other but this is incrediibly stupid. And people complain about the alignment systems in Bioware's current games?

I'm actually thinking of dropping Branwen because of this, even though she's been really useful.

I think this is one of the ways the game tries to encourage you to role play rather than power game. However, if you really dislike it you could install the happy patch from BG2 tweaks

Note that you can use BG2 tweaks and a few other mods that are ostensibly for BG2 in BG1 if you have Tutu or BGT installed.

I don't know...not being able to travel with a mix of good/evil party, and having Jaheira say that line every time I do a good deed breaks more immersion for me.

So, I'm going after Sarevok in the Thieves' Maze which I'm guessing is the end sequence. But I've yet to play Tales of the Sword Coast....is it worth doing?

It definitely worth. At least Durlag's Tower.

You can travel with a mix of good and evil - you just have to pay attention to what they are saying and not go for an extremely high or low reputation. One easy way to do that is to have Viconia in your party - each time you add her you suffer a loss of 2 reputation, so if your reputation goes too high then immediately drop her and recruit her again.

If you enjoy the game then certainly play TotSC as well. Durlag's Tower is challenging - make sure you have a thief along for the traps there. Personally I rather like the werewolf island.

Are you sure? If I remember correct when you drop her out of the party you gain +2 rep back. At least in SoA (see here). If you drop her with very high reputation you may not be able to recruit her back as she immediately goes for good (or evil).

That's why you need to drop her as soon as your reputation goes above 18 - before she has a chance to become disgruntled. Dropping her can only raise / keep reputation at 20 and immediately recruiting her again drops it back to safety at 18.

She leaves permanently if I drop her. But I did end up dropping my reputation to around 10, and keep it in the 10-15 range.

I'm playing through the Wolfwere island right now, and it's been excellent so far. Prob. my favorite quest in the game. Though, the boss fight at the ship (which I just finished)  was the toughest fight in the game for me. I ended up having my PC enter alone and lead all enemies outside the ship. It's impossible to beat them in that little room.

And I think I hit upon a bug. There's only supposed to be one Greater Wolfwere, no? (the one Karoug transforms into). But I had to fight TWO of them and as a result, I now have two babies in my inventory. At first I thought Maralee might have forgotten to mention I was dealing with twins, but they're both named Peladan...so yeah, def. a bug.

It is possible to stay in that one room with the right tactics, equipment and buffs. Example

The bug mentioned happens in a number of places where an enemy follows you between areas, leaving a copy behind. Slythe is a typical example.

So I finally beat the game (including the expansion)...good stuff. I was disappointed at the lack of character interaction and the game was a bit on the dungeon crawler side (though the gameplay was solid) but I hear everything gets better in BG2. I loved Durlag's Tower despite it being frustrating and even heart attack-inducing at times, but I guess that's just part of the charm. Also loved how the whole experience was tied to the backstory and how you slowly uncovered its secrets. That is how every dungeon should be done. Other highlights of the game include Balduran's Island, the hilarious dialogue throughout the game, and just the vast openworld-ness and scope of the game in general.

Anyhow, can't wait to continue my PC's adventure! So, how exactly do I import my save into BG2?

Just copy your final save game into the BG2 save folder. Then at the start of character creation in BG2 press import and select import from save game.

If you feel a future desire to replay you might want to add the BG1 NPC Project mod. That provides character interactions much more like BG2 as well as adding a small amount of extra content.

And by the way ... congratulations!
