If you feel a future desire to replay you might want to add the BG1 NPC Project mod. That provides character interactions much more like BG2 as well as adding a small amount of extra content.
Just looked this up, and now I wish I'd known about it before I started the game. Sounds awesome. Honestly, the only character interaction I saw was between Xzar/Montaron and Jaheira/Khalid very early in the game, and Dynaheir complaining to Minsc about Boo. That's it.

Just copy your final save game into the BG2 save folder. Then at the start of character creation in BG2 press import and select import from save game.
