You can play as femshep. Shepard by default is the most bad ass being in the galaxy and can be male or female. Nuff said.

default shep is a man,

So what? You can play as femshep and it's amazing to play as femshep, Hale does an incredible Job. I've played both and don't really get what all the negative nancy's are complaining about. The female krogan is obvously the wisest Krogan. The asari- most powerful race in the galaxy are all female. Some of the best characters of ME are female: Jack, Liara, Miri, EDI, Tali. Their all female and are really cool.

some people just love to b!tch.

those amazing female characters are also only there because manshep or his bro can bang them so

What? You're just being silly now.

Back on topic, do Vorcha even have genders? Doesn't the codex say they are most similar to worms?

they are male gendered but they don't have a sex, which is another example of masculinity being default in the ME universe

I don't believe I'm 'b!tching' about anything. I'm trying to point out that having females of every major race present will really complete the mass effect universe.

I'm not talking really about the female companion characters, yes there's bunch that are well written. I am not even talking about femshep who I think is just as good.

Wrex is one of my favourite characters (top five, really), but with the exact mechanism of the genophage being largely unknown until its third (or so) and final retcon in ME3, I feel like he was somewhat of a waste in that a female krogan would have been a thousand times more interesting. How much more poignant, and how different would the perspective be if we had the privilege of conversing with a rogue krogan woman? How would the genophage have been framed when told by a person who witnessed how women have been devalued, by necessity and design, to the point where their intrinsic worth is assigned by reproductive capability? To the point at which they are segregated and treated as bargaining chips and chattel? What mental and emotional space does one have to occupy before one either loses hope or rebukes that existence entirely? If she were the same age as Wrex, she no doubt would have seen all these things for herself, and remembered when times were different. Krogan women (apparently) do not experience spontaneous abortions, but rather stillbirths and malformations. So what words would she have to say about this psychological violence and collective trauma?

Mass Effect narratives stay losing. :(

Christ! I didn't even think about that. If Wrex was pissed off imagine how much more any female krogan would be. I don't think anyone would be able to justify the genophage to her which would make the stakes that much higher.

While the pervasive objectification of women is an important discussion to have, I feel it best that I would ask that this arguement take place elsewhere as it will futher derail and already crazy train of a thread.

Exactly. There was one thread I made quite some time ago expressing confusion about the lore behind the genophage, but I think it's safe to say that, though we are primarily shown what has happened to male krogan (they lose hope for the future, become shiftless mercenaries and deathseekers), the virus was actually something that was done TO the women. And when you look at it from the female perspective, it actually becomes so much more f*cking horrific.

There is no way in all of Ja Rule hell that you could ever justify that level of devaluation and objectification to a woman. Not only have the options of monogamy and family been largely destroyed, they have become, almost literally, *things.* The only reason they are told they exist is to reproduce, and if they cannot, their existence is meaningless. On top of that anguish, they would grapple with the terrible ordeal of multiple stillbirths and deadly deformation. That is a nightmare like I can't even imagine.

Like, what's the suicide rate amongst female krogan?

yeah, I'm a guy.

You're right I don't know what it's like to female. But I do know what traits I find attractive in females. Tough- mentally, physically, and emotionally. Loyal. Attractive- yes looks mater in the the real world. Intelligent. Funny. Carring. Bad ass.

All the characters I mentioned above have these traits.

complaining and crying and being a downer are not attractive. For either gender.

Well Sheppard shot some guys for 30 minutes and now we'll never have to know.

But this is the exact thing that happens when, as a writer, you can't really see these things from another perspective. And I'm not saying every male writer has this problem. Hell there are some great writers who can write female characters just fine and plenty of female writers who can't actually write good female characters.

If we're getting onto the subject of female characters however, how 'bout we don't make all the characters have gigantic chests this time?

I understand there's a big market for over-cafinated 13 year old boys but I actually don't really care about the sexiness of a polygonal character.

any man who refers to a woman as a "female" in this context is automatically a creep

not that you weren't for previous comments all ready, of course

and no one cares what you find attractive in a woman, ftr, and offering that last piece of commentary up as if it would affect my behavior because you personally think that it's a turn off

well

that's exactly my ****ing point

unlike those women in a vidya game a bunch of men made for you, i am not here to please you
