All the characters I mentioned above have these traits.

complaining and crying and being a downer are not attractive. For either gender.

Great, now I know what you find attractive. Thanks.

any man who refers to a woman as a "female" in this context is automatically a creep

not that you weren't for previous comments all ready, of course

and no one cares what you find attractive in a woman, ftr, and offering that last piece of commentary up as if it would affect my behavior because you personally think that it's a turn off

well

that's exactly my ****ing point

unlike those women in a vidya game a bunch of men made for you, i am not here to please you

I've got to take a break from writing music. Saved work. Okay....

Sexism in gaming is cutting across the board. Since this forum is about Mass Effect, let's look at this game. I'm not blaming the devs for this problem. The devs can have some decent ideas, but then managers get hold of them and say "do it this way" and then they have to grumble and stuff and go back and do it the way their bosses tell them. After a while you stop even trying to persuade you bosses and you hold your nose and give them the crap right away.

Sheploo's appearance throughout the series did not change at all. He remained Sheploo.

Dr. Liara T'soni in ME1 was the classic damsel in distress. She was trapped, helpless, and was a potential love interest for the 85% male player target audience. Also was a potential LI for femShep. Then she came into her own in LotSB and didn't need a rescue in ME3. But her ass grew in size from ME1 to ME3; her waist shrunk like she started wearing a corset, and she, too, got a boob job. For each step forward BW took with her they took one step back.

Kaidan -- They didn't spend that much time developing his character in ME1. I wish they had spent more time and developed it as much as Liara's. He was potentially as good a character as Liara, but I'm guessing the reason was that 85% of the time he was going to get killed on Virmire. He becomes bi in ME3 which is fine. He could have been bi in ME1, but maybe Alliance regs changed during the time Shepard was dead.

femShep remained femShep for ME1 and ME2 then became Teen-FemShep for a while, then morphed into something resembling something I can't quite place my finger on. She went from having some meat on her bones in ME1, getting a modest boob job in ME2, to becoming anorexic with no muscle tone at all, and having yet another boob job and radical facial surgery in ME3. Essentially the actress was fired and replaced (not the voice actress). Why didn't they just leave femShep alone? What was wrong with her? Seriously I don't know how ME3 femShep could hold onto a pistol larger than a .22 cal.

Ashley -- went from the female soldier in ME1 to I don't quite know what in ME3. We all know the changes and they are quite obvious. Similar to femShep without the anorexia. Why didn't they just leave Ashley alone?

Miranda -- All other women on the SR-2 had to wear the casual uniforms. Miranda wore "the crack fitting catsuit." What was so special about Miranda that she had to wear the catsuit? She was the Mary Sue of ME2.

Jacob -- had the personality of abs, because it was quite obvious women were not anywhere close to being targeted by the marketing executives in the company.

The Asari -- An all female race? It is possible. I can deal with that. An all female race full of strippers? Give me a break.

James Vega looks like a pro-wrestler.

Jack...... ME2????...... I won't say anything much more than leather straps in outer space. She wasn't sexualized, however. ME3 Jack was an improvement.

The Quarians are balanced.

Most women I know play shooters. They don't deal with this crap. Straight to multiplayer. Pew Pew Pew Pew crowd. With a few exceptions I play mostly shooters. I'd prefer a story based game, but the way female characters are usually over sexualized in them, or the way women are almost totally ignored by gaming companies for protagonists makes the selection very slim.

Judging by what they did to Ashley, the hardnosed, no-nonesense soldier... I seem to be.

Ashley's an idiot and a tool and for me left in nuclear rubble back on virmire.

I'm kidding. I like Ash. Even if she thinks Shepards a cerberus sleeper agent and/or indocrinated. I'm sure she's not the only one.

A bunch of good points.

Yeah, it's depressing when you read about "adding sex appeal" to ashley in the artbook.

The way I choose a LI is if the character is interesting enough and I want to further explore him/her or I think it makes sense for how i've played my character and want the story to unfold one way or another.
I think sme ME3 reviews actually mentioned that the sexualization of some female characters felt uncomfortable

Really with that mindset its no wonder the fanbase has to push to just add a female turian especially when someone out there is thinking "but this won't give people boners so why do it?"

.

. Mary Sue - charcater inserted into a work of fiction to reflect the author's personality or persona.

Miranda's uniform is stupid in every sense, but at least her charcater more than made up for it.

Miaranda being this genetically created supermodel is justification for the way she looks and even the way she dresses. Ashley wearing a skin-tight uniform and long hair that would get in her eyes in combat makes no sense.

That interpretation of Miri, is for players that are jealous about how awesome and hot she is. The mary sue of Mass Effect as always been Alenko. I like Kaiden but to say he's a bit, shall we say, annoying is an understatement.

Well Sheppard shot some guys for 30 minutes and now we'll never have to know.

But this is the exact thing that happens when, as a writer, you can't really see these things from another perspective. And I'm not saying every male writer has this problem. Hell there are some great writers who can write female characters just fine and plenty of female writers who can't actually write good female characters.

This is why race, ethnicity, sex, gender, sexuality, socioeconomics, history, and all their intersections are so vital when considering a story. They mould so much of our perceptions and how we feel, think, and interact with our world. This is why it's so ludicrous to me when people on this website (and really, everywhere) say these things are irrelevant or are of little consequence in everything from simple and fair representation to crafting narrative. Are you kidding? It is absolutely important, perhaps of absolute importance, and it's getting to the point where I just assume a person is a blockhead if they think otherwise. This kind of myopia is why there are millions of unexplored stories (truth and fiction) waiting to be discovered, and why so many discourses about story-telling (and the tellings themselves) lack desperately needed depth and nuance.

If we're getting onto the subject of female characters however, how 'bout we don't make all the characters have gigantic chests this time?

Lawd, don't even get me started on those wackass body models tho.

Like,

Bio

You already made FemShep look like a misshapen, red-headed, mayo monster after a ridiculous beauty contest

didn't eem give her an actual face scan or nothing

but really

You couldn't scan a reasonable body model tho?

WHY SHE GOTTA LOOK LIKE FRANKENSTEIN'S MONSTER'S BRIDE?

WAS THE STRUGGLE THAT REAL?

I thought Kaidan looked fine before. It was his character that needed beefing up. Then again in ME1 every character was basically a walking codex. They were all pretty wooden.

One other one... I noticed Joker got some beefing up as well. How does he manage that physique with brittle bone disease?

We won't mention EDI.... *head desk* as much as I like the character.

What I did like about the Citadel DLC is the remarks made by the insignificant characters reflect those of the frustrations of the writing staff during the series. This is one place where the autodialogue can be fun. This DLC was so campy I think it upstaged the game itself.

Joker didn't get specifically beefed up, he uses the standard body model. By beefed Kaidan people mean his armor model
