After shooting myself in the foot last time, I'd like to avoid it this time around.  I am wondering how other back up their content.  I'd like to use a remote service.

I am also looking for a good way to do a "Rolling Release" of my material without using the NWN2Vault and making it compatible.  I suppose I could do a rolling release by just uploading versions, huh?  How do you guys like to incorporate new content into your exisiting builds?  Do you like to just add another or do you like to pick from things and then add the appropriate 2DA lines?  I'm looking for some good feedback to make this as easy as possible for folks.

I'm wondering why you are wanting to avoid the Vault or Nexus for your content...that is where the community uploads their content, that is where they will look for it.

As far as backup, you could always use Dropbox...I have a link in my sig.  Also, as far as 2DAs there is a community wide effort for reserved lines in the 2DAs that I as a builder would prefer everyone use.  It saves time and frustration in the long run.

The vault seems to be overrun with spam in the comments which puts its in a bad light IMO. Still, as I said, I suppose I could do a rolling release with them with versions. I do have a pro dropbox account, I was just wondering if there was a better alternative that people use. Its also not really the HAK lines I am am wondering about so much as how people like to use new content. When I built on NWN1 I would just stack HAKs but I don't really do that on NWN2. I usually pull what I want.

Dropbox seems to be a popular option with nwn2 modders, and gives 2 gigs free. If you go with that, make sure you go via someone's referral link so they get the extra space given for a referral.

The Neverwinter Nexus http://neverwinter.n...s.com/index.php does not have the "you must ftp anything larger than 25 megs" limitation the Vault does for uploads. I don't think they have an api for auto-synching content, but the upload process is easier than the Vault.

If you release content, but it's not on the Vault or the Nexus, realistically no one's going to see it. Additionally, much content that was posted to the Vault, with the download link not being a vault link but someone's non-Vault site such as a personal website, is gone because the person left the community and removed the content.

For content you do add, remember to reserve lines in the 2das for it so it's "well behaved".

As for people using it, depends on the content. If you release robes with baseball team logos on them, it's probably not going to be used much :-) Different people like adding different content to their mods. Some people like having all kinds of clothing and weaponry, some like having more placeables and don't really care as much about clothing.

That is in the eventual scope of my project. Basically I want a modder to be able to just set things up on their system, and as they get them perfect, to upload that content "as is" to the vault / nexus / drop box / where ever ( wiht the ability to choose files, folders, or just say everything which isn't default content ). Then when they get a report of a bug, they can just fix it on their system, and sync it with the nexus or vault. And all those using it ( via my installer ) would see a new version is up ( programmatically ), the next time they check updates it would download your latest fixes.

I am hoping i can help the vault out as well to make it easier to review and approve content, and lower bandwidth since i could actually just upload partial updates, but I am probably just going to replicate how a user uploads or ftp's it now.

But this is the only way i can think of to be easy enough for the modder to do it, where it makes things easier for them and not harder. ( if something is harder, it means few will adopt it regardless of benefits, of course I have to actually have other methods to catch those doing vault updates without using my program ). I can also throw in some verification of a given mods integrity, such as spotting missing textures for a model, that sort of thing.

My aim though is to get it easier to get a single mod on multiple sites  each time you update it. ( vault and nexus, possibly drop box too ), so it's less likely if the vault or nexus goes down, we lose anything.

( and my own projects will be the first guinea pigs for this, my monster pack was actually originally created with the tools built into this overall system i am working on  )

I am also starting to work with Rolo Kipp on the Vault Preservation Project, wherein all the vault content is actually safely backed up. I am going to make it so if desired you can help backing up the vault, but also am thinking those with large hard drives can just cache a lot of the content they are using on their hard drives. He probably has a lot of the projects already safe on his hard drives now.

Vault is still the place to be, regardless of the spam problem. Generally that is just folks posting to it for SEO purposes, and probably could be eliminated by setting all links on comments to norefer, or hiding from the googlebot ( thus destroying the benefit ), and perhaps looking at the headers of users as they register/post and eliminating any that are obviously bots, or that follow visible patterns. ( actually amazed at how many don't set up fake user agents when they use perl / python type tools to automate registering ). Unless that is worked out, it's just hard work pruning this perpetual garbage, probably just needs more people to volunteer to help over there.

For my own personal backups (in case of a computer melt-down) I tend to stick things onto USB sticks. I carry the one with my latest backups with me when I go to work, in case a Wizard of Oz like tornado takes my entire house to another dimension while I'm not home. It could happen!

I tend to pick the bits I want to use, add them into my own HAKs, and add my own 2DA lines. I always give credit to the original creators in the module's ReadMe file though.

I don't much care for modules that instruct you to download entire HAKs from other download locations as a part of the installation. Especially if they've only used a couple of things in an enormous compilation HAK. I prefer everything to be downloadable from the one location, so that's how I package my own modules.

My method is like Dann's. I prefer picking and choosing just the pieces I need, adding them manually to my 2DA, and dropping the files in my campaign folder (not in a hak). My design is to be installed, played, and then deleted when finished. Much simpler when all content is self-contained.
