While I think that BioWare dropped the ball by denying any option for a happy ending, it's hardly the only issue that this ending has.

Spend a few minutes looking beyond the surface of what's presented to you and the plot holes and circular logic will reveal themselves.

It's not even sad, I got the ending where I destroy the reapers and live. The only major casualties are EDI & Geth which are robots that can always be built again.

I also see the citadel rebuilt, Krogan going through cultural evolution, Samara spending time with her daughter etc

I love the ending, I think fans just want some Disney ending where everyone goes home holding hands which doesn't fit in here, he survives so you can imagine Shepherd goes on to reunite with his crew and does whatever you wish but it would be pointless for Bioware to hold hands with our imagination and have them guide us through everything.

I think disliking the ending because it's sad is valid, but I don't think removing the sadness would elevate it to an epic-tier ending.

The sad bits bum me out, like, a lot, but without that, it'd just be a truly mediocre ending and I'd probably feel nothing for it, one way or the other.

I actually prefer to think my Shepard died sitting next to Anderson watching the fleet s/he'd pulled together kill the Reapers somehow. Not exactly warm and fuzzy, but still better than that chaos-and-order nonsense.

DLC is optional, doesn't count, especially when one of them is paid.
