Letting Go of Shepard

And bad endings or good endings, whatever you feel about 'em they are the reason why Shepard make us cry at the time of his "farewell" in the Citadel DLC: it's because this story has an end, it will not drag forever until everything has been said and done like other games.
Mass Effect is a milestone of Sci-Fi goodness and will NEVER end, since Shepard has earned the right to be alongside icons like James T. Kirk or Luke Skywalker. The story, however, had to, or we could have ended up with just another endless space franchise with a main character who could have gradually lost any relevance.
So yeah, I almost cried at the end of Citadel and I AM sad about this, but I firmly believe that Shepard must NOT return for the "next trilogy" or whatever the future of this franchise will be.
His story is over, and has been one hell of a ride.
"...the best."

ME3 needs an expansion or 2 while the other office is working on the next mass effect!
This is just my opinion of course I don't expect everyone's to be the same.
If I felt that my Shepard would have chosen destroy I may have been able to head cannon the rest although I still don't see why the destroyers have to do that either.

This is not to say that I could not enjoy other stories within the universe and games set apart from Shepard but I can’t see it being anything more than a ‘blue-shift’ to half-life, a nice side distraction and way to expand on the universe, but it’s not really half-life.
But with it appearing she will never be back and the way the trilogy brought that about really does turn me off, I cannot really envisage myself enjoying another ME game to anywere near the same extent with the spectre of Shepard’s untold and unfinished stories looming over it.
I can’t understand why Bioware took such a great character and could not say at the end of ME3 ‘we are shelving Shepard for a while, were going to tell some other stories and when we are good and ready and feel we can do her justice she will be back’

For me, Shepard is more than a character but an extension of myself. The characters who I indirectly interact with seem more real than just a bundle of polygons. That and his arguably inconclusive character arc is why he's difficult for me to let go of (without sounding overly sentimental). I assume many feel similarly.
Yes. This. All of it.

Same. Honestly, I was ready to let go, but that hot mess of an ending felt less like a tearful goodbye and more like the universe I cared about was needlessly ripped from my hands. Compare that to, say, Mordin's death, which was one of the most powerful moments in the series for me.PainCakesx wrote...

Mordin died securing a future he believed in. Shepard died because the Catalyst demanded it.

Yeah there was something really off about the whole catalyst thing and it wasn't Shepard dying. I expected Shepard to die actually but I expected it to happen in battle saving a crew member or something similar. Like maybe a Grunt act giving them time to get away from a mob of Reapers to something needed to take that mob out or whatever. I expected Shep to go down in a blaze of glory as a hero not alone, on the citadel without even an enemy in sight.. it was just wrong.

Don't worry he'll be back after Shepless ME4 flops.
It's frankly absurd, who kills of their main character in a successful series?
Shepard IS the face of Mass Effect.

Harby and the Reapers have nothing on SuperMac - one swish of his quill and Shep was f*cked.

This trilogy has been amazing, but I'm hoping we have more customization for our hero in ME4.
Save the Krogan in ME3 -- play as a Krogan in ME4.
I'm not saying I don't want to see Shepard, nor do I want a fresh start in ME4, I just don't want to play as him anymore. Shepard is just our avatar in this great universe Bioware has created. It would be amazing to walk through the Citadel again one day and see a statue in the glory of Shepard; whether my new character is fully aware of past events or not.

Initially, I was actually hoping for a suicide scene for my Shepard. Space magic combustion is close enough.
