Hrm... maybe with Tali it was love at first sight. Maybe it was her voice. Maybe it was her honesty. I guess for starters I'd pick all the above.

I think for me all that was summed up in one sentence she used post-trial: "I don't think life is about what you deserve." That is Tali, and that is probably what kept me with her more than anything.

Liara is the most perfect LI for my FemShep. They've been through a lot. I like that Liara was there right from the beginning, recovered Shepard's body and never doubted her for joining Cerberus (because it really got so annoying how some people had to point that out all the time - except Garrus). I also find her very beautiful and smart.

This, except mine is maleshep of course.

Why did I pick Garrus? My shep is an infiltrator and her crush started the moment Garrus made that headshot in the clinic. Being a paragon, normally she would have mentioned something about endangering hostages and reckless behaviour but for that split second she didn’t care ^_^.

Garrus/femshep is by far the best romance I’ve seen in a video game. They start out as squad mates become best friends and then they become lovers. It’s a steady progression that pays off in a big way, and to me felt the most natural and normal (which is rather ironic). And like Tali says who doesn’t love a good cross species romance? There is no one Garrus trusts or respects more and despite their physical differences they still manage to fall in love with each other. As a character Garrus has too many loveable qualities to count. He’s loyal, he’s funny, has a sexy voice, he’s a confident badass but he can turn into a bumbling, awkward mess when confronted with the opposite sex ^_^

Also if he’s committed to something he goes all in. This shows throughout the romance , I mean they guy took dance lessons on the side during a reaper war! Garrus made it VERY difficult for my sheps to romance other people (also bioware helped by only making two hetro options count so...) I thought Alistair couldn't be beat for a loooong time but now any romance that bioware does from now on will be compared to garrus/femshep, it was just that good.

By now I always take Tali as a LI. Her romance seems to flow most natural of all of them, since Tali is the only LI that is with you in all the three games (for a maleshep at least). The only downside is, that you get her rather late in ME2 and even later in ME3.
I also like the idea, that Shep falls in love with her without ever having seen her face, but because of her character. She is smart, determined, altruistic and compassionate. I also like the development from Geth hater to Geth friend and making peace between the Geth and the Quarians is arguable the greatest moment in the whole series.

Miranda is my favorite by a long stretch. I liked that she starts out aloof and indifferent to Shepard. She isn't googly-eyed about the galactic hero. I liked that she is intelligent and self-made, and that she lives life on her own terms. I like that Shepard has to earn her respect, and that her respect is genuine once given. It was fun seeing her warm up to Shepard if he chooses to pursue her. I like how she opens up and admits that she isn't perfect, inspite of her tough exterior. I liked that she is only LI who is truly Shepard's equal. She doesn't hero-worship him and she doesn't need him. She chooses to be with him because she wants to. Miranda and Shepard fit naturally together because they have a lot in common: they are capable of great things, and know what it is to have huge expectations placed on them. They are good for each other. In many ways Miranda's romance reminds me of my relationshiph with my wife, which is probably why I chose her more often than not.

Smart, Beautiful, Kind, Compassionate, Sexy, Strong..........how could I not choose Liara.

My Canon: The moment they made eye contact on Therum, he knew Liara was special, and she felt the same.

No one else in the series comes close to Liara.

Because I found Tali to be rather cute and funny.

Her romance also feels like it's about more than the physical contact after it takes off, which I think is intriguing.

I like strong, beautiful women that can kick my arse to the moon and back. Hence, Ashley.

Also, Kimberly Brooks has an awesome voice.

Liara...I like her intelligence and compassion, her curiosity and how she is amazingly driven for an asari of her age/dedicates herself to her goals. Of course, I also found her physically attractive once I met her on Therum. Also...Ali Hillis. The chemistry between Jennifer Hale and Ali Hillis is fantastic (...and Jennifer Hale outright said that Liara is her favourite romance!). I think it improves the emotional and romantic tone of the relationship to an even greater extent. The Asari are also my favourite race by far.

Of all the characters in Mass Effect, Liara understands Shepard better than anyone else in the galaxy. She's the closest thing that my Shepard has to an equal. Her work as the Shadow Broker, her work figuring out how to build the Crucible, and even her work creating the memory capsules in case the current cycle lost the fight is as important as Shepard's work in uniting the races of the galaxy. Their relationship had experienced its ups and downs (Illium...Liara doesn't drop everything to join the Normandy), which makes the romance more meaningful imo.

Of course there are also some things that are bothering me about her romance...the awkard "friendzone" convo on the Citadel comes to my mind. They could´ve put in a bit more effort on the ME1 romance as well.

Liara, for similar reasons.

She is with the exception of Mordin, perhaps the most intelligent member of your sqadmates. She's one of the more compassionate of your squaddies, while still being capablle of ruthlessness when the situation demands it. By the end of LotSB she emerges one of the more important people in the galaxy in her own right, and isn't just standing in Shepard's shadow. From the beginning she has also been the only character with whom Shepard could let down his guard for a moment and voice private fears or doubts, which only served to make his character feel more human. All those were factors in making Liara one of my favorite characters, and my favorite out of the LI choices.

It also didn't hurt that she is IMO also the most attractive of the LI options, and has the best romance arc of the bunch.

After romancing Liara in ME1, and through the Shadow Broker content of ME2, I got myself accidentally locked in with Sam in ME3. By accidental, I mean that I didn't think flirting with Sam would be any different to hooking up with Kelly in ME2, ie. no real effect on your main romance. By the time I finally realized that this wasn't the case, I really wasn't bothered as I love Samantha's scenes. Since then I've gone back and run my Liara LI run through, but it's just not the same.

I like the dichotomy with Sam - romantically aggressive/confident, but socially awkward.

I watched the Sam Citadel scenes on youtube (as she's not ever going to be one of my romances) and they are really cute. I agree with you on the dichotomy.

For my canon femshep: I've always felt garrus' romance was a pathway for greater character development. He was sweet and funny with a bad boy side which is what my femshep liked.

For my canon maleshep: I like the cortez romance because shep could comfort and be there for him even after when he's still struggling with his husbands death. You pull him out of a really dark spot even in the time of galactic extinction.

I choose Ashley because she is damn sexy and badass.

Her wearing the pink and white armor when you first see her in game was a definite plus.

I romanced Miranda in ME2 and she would probably be the main choice...because I do think her background and personal story arc fit perfectly with Shepards...but Ashley was there since ME1.

Oh yeah, OP, 'cos Liara turns me on xD

Also, because she's the romance I most enjoy. I might do Tali next time :-)

I always liked Liara. Found her awkwardness in ME1 cute and it literally went from there. Didn't even know romances were a thing until it happened. But I approved

Miranda is my favorite. Why? I find her really attractive, obviously she's gorgeous. But I find her personalty and confidence awesome. She's a bit B!tchy early in ME2, but that's cause there's sexual frustration and competition between her and Shep (She's obviously physically attracted to him from the beginning) and she's insecure about her looks, ability and origin. She's a control freak. And most control freaks are very insecure- but in a good way.

Miri is a very deep and complex character. Most of the ME2 characters are. When you peal back the layers of Miri she's actually an incredibly venerable and affectionate woman. But also, she's a take charge, no BS BAMF. And I mean she does have lots of ASSets.

I find her very compatible with someone like Commander Shepard. I think it would take a man like Shepard to get and keep someone like Miranda Lawson.

Much of this, indeed.

Miranda is an alpha female. She's incredibly competent, incredibly attractive, and emotionally complex, with a ruthless streak. She's also a woman driven to achieve the impossible, at the start to an unhealthy degree because she feels she needs to justify her genetic enhancements, but she learns that she needn't in ME2 if you romance her, and still goes on working for a goal bigger than herself. I felt that my main Shepard had an instant rapport with her, which ME2 showed nicely in the CB approach at the end of ME2.

Unlike all other LIs available for maleShep, Miranda is, in her own way, as larger-than-life as Shepard is, and that's why she's a natural fit, a perfect companion for him.

Ash is one of the most complicated characters in the game.  Strong, fiercely loyal, but cynical of the motives of others.  She's unafraid to voice her own opinions and always speaks from the heart.

And she's quite attractive with her hair in a bun

I chose my LI because I was in the middle of a damn war and didn't have time to break regulations by fraternizing with my crew.

... then I wound up waking up next to Javik, which made my decision feel all the more RIGHT.

I chose Kaidan because he actually seemed to care about my Shepard rather than just wanting a casual fling. Being willing to just shoot the breeze with one's attractive commanding officer and allowing whatever develops to go ahead without mountains of angst is quite attractive.
