I chose Tali first because she's adorable
I chose Miranda second because I can't romance Samara
I chose Miranda again because ME3 Tali annoyed me for some reason and I like the Australian accent. The close ups of her ass bugged me a lot though.

In the end "We'll bang, okay?"

For me there was only Garrus. He's not just my PC's love interest, he's my favorite game character of all time.

I wanted to romance him back when I first played ME1. From the moment he shows up, he's on your side. I loved that about him. I tried to accept Kaidan, but I resented him for not being the one I wanted and couldn't have.

Needless to say, I was ecstatic when Garrus turned out to be an option in the sequel. I think it works even better the way it turned out than if they'd made him an option in the first game. I love that they went from friendship to romance, it's an arc that isn't usual for BioWare romances and it just makes them seem so comfortable with each other. It adds depth and subtext to the typical "meet, flirt, cutscene" formula.

To me Garrus and Shepard are just perfect together. My canon Shep romanced nobody in ME1, because there's nobody else for her. They have so much in common and yet they compliment each other with their differences as well (especially if you play Paragon to his more Renegade sensibilities). From the moment they met they were on the same wavelength. They just get each other, as soldiers and as people striving to do good even when it isn't easy. You can feel the trust between them before the romance even starts, and it's a romance that only gets better as it goes.

I could write pages (and probably have, to be honest) about how great Garrus is, both as a character and for Shepard. I consider him paradoxically perfect. He's the bad boy you can always depend on, the honor-bound rebel, the self-deprecating braggard. He's the legendary vigilante and the everyman buddy you can shoot bottles with. And somehow, he makes it all work together.

Most of all, I feel like they're both better when they're with each other. With the little in-jokes and wordless shows of support, they don't feel like the PC and her romance. They're a team. There's no Shepard without Vakarian.

Thane.

Because, he knows how to make an entrance...his voice is fantastic, he moves with deadly grace and his eyes are beautiful. And because I planned single Shepard, but couldn't resist Thane. The more he and my Shep (Angie) talked, the more I could see that they're made for each other. Angie Shepard, who wasn't thinking about such silly things like romancing anyone, while there's a mission to do, have fallen for this guy completely. The way he moved, talked, his confidence and proffesionalism, kind nature, despite his profession, his manners. She thought - 'leaving everything until 'after the mission' doesn't work for me, so it's time to enjoy the life, instead of following strict rules that only made me alone in the past'. Her death and the ME2 crew helped her understand that. 'I've spent 2 years dead. Every moments seems irreplaceable now'. There are some parallels between Shepard and Thane and this makes them feel connected to each other.

To me, Shep and Thane are a couple made of awesome ;) (I love Thane's loyalty mission -it's done so well). There's a tension between them if you choose the right responses and Thane seems to fall in love with Femshep even if she doesn't respond to that. He's such a sweet guy... :(

Edit: I can't resist. No, I did not choose him because I wanted a tragic and sad romance for my Shepard.  Such things belong to cheap stories about tragic romances. I chose Thane, because of his character. I sometimes do playthroughs in some games that end up tragic or just not so good, but it's mostly for science and as an experiment.

Because Javik and Morinth weren't available
Because Kaidan's romance continues throughout the whole game
Because I like the content
Because I think their "love story" is pretty cute in itself.
Because I like Kaidan's character.
Because I find Jacob boring, I don't like Garrus, and I had a sense something bad will happen with Thane.
Because I respect Kaidan the most out of all the other characters in the game.
Because dat voice
Because dat ass
Because I can
Because the world is round it turns me on
Because the wind is high it blows my mind
Because the sky is blue, it makes me cry
Because.

The end.

Liara, because she says in ME1 she is barely more than a child, and my Shep is a paedophile.

Kaidan was my original choice, simply because I liked his personality. Not sure I can really explain it well enough, so I suppose that will have to do.  I never planned to do any of the other romances really. Not because I thought Kaidan was THAT great, but merely a lack of interest in seeing the others. Garrus was my best friend, Thane was a bit off-putting to me at first, Jacob was interesting when my Shepard first met him and went downhill from there, and Liara never interested me that way.

Then I figured what the heck, I'll try Garrus' romance once to see the dialogue. I thought it was just gonna be a friends with benefits deal so why not try it out and see the result of "cheating" on Kaidan in ME3 (fully planning on returning to him). Then I got to the ME2 romance scene and realized I was in trouble on the whole going back to Kaidan thing. He was just so adorable, and there was no way I could have done a playthrough making something else go wrong for him. Once I had that decided I played another romance (one that I actually killed Kaidan on Virmire finally) with just Garrus and really loved it with the actual romance part anticipated. He just fits well with my view on Shepard. Loyal, adorable, funny, etc.

As for Thane, once I had gotten a chance to go through his dialogue in game, I thought he was very intriguing. Initially I still wasn't going to try his romance, but since I'd been proven wrong about Garrus I thought it was only fair to try Thane's too. I liked Thane's more serious feeling personality and was pretty happy with his romance, and I actually loved the way his death plays out in terms of the relationship with the additional bits from the Citadel DLC added in (before that... it was just okay).

Thane's was more of an interesting story where Garrus' felt more... fulfilling?... I suppose. As for Kaidan's, it was well done overall and gave a great sense of a relationship. I just happen to prefer Garrus' style more.

Because he was a nice male human who was with my Shep from the start of the series. The entire story pretty much started with Shepard and Kaidan. I like his romance arc, he has a nice voice, I like his personality, he's very good-looking and he sticks to his values no matter what anybody else thinks.

I'm quite fond of Garrus as LI, too, though. He's the LI for my renegade Shepard.

I chose Tali because I always liked her personality. She was fun, kind and had been with me since the beginning. I went with Ashley in ME1 because she was one of the only two options. Once ME2 came around and I found out I could romance Tali... Ash went to the wayside. :P

I did have several games with various LIs, though. Sadly, I won't play them.

Fox news told me I would get a naked romance scene. So ...naturally i went blue shortly thereafter.
So i guess my reasoning for choosing was... curiosity?

Liara is nice and smart and a hidden badass and blue. And is female and romancable by femshep, which is good since I'm a straight guy who prefers playing a female shepard.

Garrus is awesome and funny and adorable.

Talking to Samantha almost never fails to make me smile, whether I'm romancing her or not.

Miranda. Besides her incredible looks, I enjoyed seeing her break out of her shell gradually as you delve into her backstory in more detail. She becomes a very vulnerable and open character. I thought that was always cool - the fact that she's a dynamic character if you talk with her a lot. Her romance content in ME3 was pretty brief, but the Citadel DLC did a great job. I really like how she says she wants to have a normal life, but she doesn't know how.

In ME1 I preferred Ash because her character seemed a lot more realistic and fleshed out than Liara. She had several different arcs to her story: her faith, mistrust of aliens, love of family, and sense of fatalism all made her character seem like someone Shepard could relate to.

Then I played ME2 and all that went out the window. Miranda took center stage for some of the reasons I liked Ash's character in ME1, she seemed more fleshed out than some of the other choices. One of the things I liked the most about her LI track is that more so than any of the other Sheploo options she seems like some one you have to pursue. Unlike Jack, Tali, and Liara Miranda's affections have to be earned. She doesn't trust you until you prove that you are capable and that you are genuinely want to help her protect the one thing she truly cares about in life.

Her vanilla ME3 content is ok, but the Citadel DLC scenes with Miranda are my favorite sections of the new content.

It doesn't hurt that I think Yvonne Strahovski is one of the most beautiful women on Earth, and she has an amazing voice...so...yeah Miranda all the way.

Kaidan. He seems to be the most well adjusted and wisest of the companions, and Sbarge is a terrific voice actor. Kaidan is also easy on the eyes. :)

I romanced both Liara, and Ashley in the ME1. But I continued with the Liara romance in ME2, but when I found out she wasn't aviailable I romanced Miranda in ME2, because even Shepard is human and needs a companion. In ME 3 I romanced both Miranda and a another play through with Liara.

I mussed have missed that scene where Saren forced Shepard at gunpoint to choose between Kaidan and Liara.

Kaidan was not an option for her, if you atcually read that post.

I played ME2 first, and I initially chose Miranda because I fell in love with her cold, professional, mission-first attitude. That's still my favorite part about her character, but knowing how much she opens up later on makes me love her even more.
