I can't say why, but I was drawn to Tali the first time I saw her (played ME2 before anything else). At first it was because I thought the quarians were interesting, but once she joined the squad I came to like her cute and nerdy personality a lot.

I wasn't interested in any human characters.

Picked ash in ME1, was the more interesting of the two choices then, still a bit miffed over how character development turned out on that person. Tali from ME2 on, all day every day. A whole lot of reasons why, and I don't want to post a big wall o' text.

I originally chose Garrus because he is my favorite character and I just had to see how the romance was. I didn't like how it started but was touched by the scene in Shep's cabin and decided to canonzie that romance and I just loved how well done it was in 3.

I really wanted to romance Jack but had no desire to play as a male. ME3 pretty much ignoring those romances made it, to me, so not even worth it. But now with the Citadel DLC, I may go back and do a Jackmance.

Becuase I liked Ashley's character. I thought she was interesting and easy on the eyes.

Tali because she is one of the few decent people and she stays by your side through thick and thin.

I played the entire trilogy for the first time last November. I knew before playing that Kaidan was going to be one of the gay romance options, so I favored him in ME1. I really liked his calm and collected personality. He was a good friend to my Shepard.

When I started ME2, I really wanted my old crew back. I hated working with Cerberus. Those bastards killed Kohoku. I didn't blame Kaidan at all for not wanting to leave the Alliance to work with a bunch of terrorists, even though I really wanted him with me. At least I had Garrus and Tali, and in time I grew to love the rest of the ME2 crew.

I was thrilled to have Kaidan back in ME3. I was already so fond of him. Cortez was introduced, but I just didn't see my Shepard with him. He had such a history with Kaidan, and those hospital scenes. I just can't say no to his face:

At first, I was a kind of bitter that I didn't have any romance in the first two games, and only had two options in the third. It felt very limiting. Now, it doesn't matter to me at all. Even if every male character was made available, I would still pick Kaidan everytime. And I'm kind of glad I couldn't romance him in ME1. I actually think his romance arc is better if you wait til ME3.

Kaidan is down to earth, loyal, genuine, kind, compassionate, honorable, composed, humble, strong, sweet, and supportive. He's the perfect fit for Shepard.

And his voice...

First it was Liara, becasue she was shy, socially awkward, a researcher (I like smart people) and blue. But then she became a bit too much like Kristen Stewart in the terms of cold and emotionless. Then it was Tali because the relationship was more on personality and history rather than looks seeing as you had no idea what she looked like.

If I was to play as a FemShep or GayShep, it would probably be Kaidan or Steve.

I felt like Tali's romance was the most natural for maleshep. Most of the others seemed forced, or like one-night stands.

Had to go with Liara. I was just drawn to her, and her social awkwardness in ME1. Then she "grew up" per se and became stronger and more confident. Also, in ME3 when she head-butted the vent on Mars while escaping...Well, that was awesome. :) (Nerdy, smart, and dat body)

I never really thought much of Tali in ME1, to be honest. I of course helped her on her pilgrimage, and thought she was a cool character, but that was kinda it. In ME2 Tali grew on me a lot, since the beginning of the game with the mission on Freedom's Progress - she trusted you, and seemed honestly regretful that she wasn't able to join your party at the time. In her recruitment and loyalty missions I grew to like her a lot more, and I absolutely loved her Normandy dialogue. Haven't romanced anyone else since.

I meant over multiple playthroughs anyway, not 1. There's lotsa good romance content and writing that's worth exploring.

The problem ist, that one playthrough takes me about 100 hours now with all three games and all the DLC and I don't want to skip through dialoge or ignore the other team mates.

For all the possibilities, ME gives you, most of my playthroughs are almost identical (paragon sentinel with Tali as LI) and I can't bring myself, to play the game in any other way.

Factor in the fact that you can watch all the LI scenes on Youtube and there really isn't as much incentive to try out the other options.  I have three distinct Sheps and two of them romance the same character.  If I replay the trilogy in the future I will probably recreate one of those playthroughs because I enjoyed the way they played out.

I choose Liara in one because she's freaking amazing. I chose Jacob in another because his romance in ME2 was one of the best developed. I chose Garrus because Garrus. I chose Cortez because he's awesome, even though the setup for the relationship is a bit melodramatic and cheesy. I chose Tali because she's one of my favorite characters in the series. I chose Jack because she's a bonafide psycho, and I liked the twist she added.

This too. I have three different Sheps: Sara (Garrus), Nadia (Thane), and Rhianna (Kaidan). I have way more profiles of Sara than any other character. Why? Because I enjoy that romance more than the other two. That's not to say that the other two are bad, they're not, I just enjoy the Garrus romance more. (And it doesn't hurt that my Garrusmancer is a Vanguard which is sooo much fun to play.)

The problem is also, that there isn't a cut between ME2 and 3 as there was between ME1 and 2. That is of course a good thing as far as story telling and character development is considered, but if you want to try out different romances, you can't just start ME3 multiple times with the same ME2 end save game. You have to play at least through ME2 and possible ME1, to even get the option.

The other point for me is, that the romance with Tali has this absolute high point on Rannoch that is absolutely unique to her and that no other possible LI has...so why would I even try another romance, if that means that I kind of miss the best moment in any of the three games?

It comes down to which character I thought was most interesting to explore. Jack, while seemingly cliche at first actually had a lot of depth to her and I was interested in exploring her character.

My main Shepard was mostly renegade, who had a terrible life before he joined the Alliance (colonist/sole survivor). He was bitter over the losses he had and wasn't that much fond of aliens, especially Batarians.

Liara was too soft and understanding for him. He didn't need a shrink or someone to pity him, he just needed an outlet for all the stress he was going through now with Saren and the Reapers. Ashley he didn't mind hanging out with, but she was too much like him and he hated seeing himself in someone else to pursue anything. Tali, though not romance-able yet, he tolerated the fact that she was an alien more than he did for Liara (he doesn't find Asari even remotely as attractive as others claim they are), but she was more like someone he should protect, like a little sister.

That left Kaidan, who he wasn't even in love with. He was more subdued, calm and collected.
The constructive way he spoke tempered Shepard's volatile temper and frustrations, offering an outside perspective. He was kinda boring, but Shepard needed less drama in his life and Kaidan seemed the most put together out of everyone else.

He didn't realize how hurt he was when Kaidan turned his back on him on Horizon, but he was glad that he wasn't as trusting of Cerberus as the others were. And because Kaidan wasn't there rein back his stress levels in ME2, he practically went full renegade, angry at Cerberus, angry at everyone he met post-Normandy. Eventually he came to accept them as part of his team, but for awhile he was very much lost with himself. After Arrival and pre-ME3, he had a death wish to end the Reaper threat once and for all, throwing himself into his work.

Kaidan in ME3 was Shepard's wake up call to survive as they started to tentatively become friends again and then something more. Kaidan was devoted to the Alliance, devoted to the cause, and eventually devoted to Shepard completely. If Shepard survived the war, I imagine he'd like to settle down in Vancouver or something with him, drink some beer and just get through all the PTSD he's going to endure for years to come.

I agree, the development in Tali's relationship is excellent. It builds up naturally and hits an emotional peak at the perfect moment.
