What's interesting was that my choices were more or less organic in my playthroughs. I wasn't aware that there was a huge demand for Garrus or Tali romances from the first game - I usually ended up with Liara (both for broshep and Femshep) although I tried Ashley for kicks. I don't mind Kaidan but he's a little too, hm, I dunno -- he came across as a little less interesting to me.

Then Mass Effect 2 rolled around and Bioware pulled that thing that so many game developers do with sequels - pull the rug out of the returning character and I spent a lot of time reminiscing and longing for the old squad.

And then Garrus showed up and I was like HELL YEAH THIS IS MY BRO.

And Tali showed up and -- I was genuinely surprised by her and how she grew. Meanwhile, Ash and Liara got all weird and distant (especially Ash, although I can understand her distance better. Liara just took a turn for the weird). So my maleshep always goes for Tali and femshep goes for the ever-charming Garrus. Their personalities just seemed to fit, better. I don't know why. And you know what? In terms of the story, it seemed like they cared. Cared enough to stick around. They were around for the bits of the story that mattered, and seemed genuinely important to Shepard.

Maybe soon I'll try to stick with Liara for all three games or at least go back to her.

Four playthroughs, four Shepards, none romance the same characters. I come up with a backstory for all of my characters, and pick the one(s) who best fit their individual personalities.

Nolan (colonist/ruthless/paragade/infiltrator): Backstory is too extensive to detail here. Had a sister who wanted to join the Alliance who was captured when the slavers hit Mindoir. Joined up in her stead, ascended to N6 and dropped into Torfan... where he learned exactly what the batarians do with female slaves. A decent man with some lingering psychological issues, he was saddled with a reputation he didn't particularly want after Torfan (which he views as his greatest failure), but uses that intimidation factor to avoid fights when he can. He is very protective of his crew, and though initially (and understandably) genophobic, he has a thing for protecting women. Romanced Tali, and only Tali - the woman who stood with him through everything. Out of all of them, this seemed like the most genuine romance to me - a friendship that grew into something more.

Laura (colonist/sole survivor/paragade/engineer): An AU character - Nolan's sister, in the event that he was killed on Mindoir and she escaped. Kind, caring, though with an underlying pragmatic streak which grows more pronounced over the course of the trilogy. A Cerberus sympathizer with an ambiguous relationship to the organization (sole survivor... that's what we're calling it now), she has a few close friends among aliens but would never consider one as a romantic partner - unlike Nolan, she maintains a professional distance with most of her crew. I thought her personality meshed well with Kaidan, and despite some rough patches, she stuck with him throughout.

Jayne (earth(-that-was)born/(big damn) war hero/renegon/soldier): Jayne, as in Cobb. Mercenary. Never passes up drink, or a payoff, or a chance to get laid (by human women, anyway). Doesn't care much for bugs or robots; playfulrenegade, but has a few moral limits. Romanced Ashley in ME1. Missed all ME1 Cerberus quests and had no idea who he was working with in ME2. Romanced Kelly, then Miranda. Lied to Ashley about cheating, broke things off with Miranda to try to patch it up with her, ultimately lost Ashley and Kelly in the Coup, then Miranda on Horizon, ending up alone.

Miranda. Beautiful, strong driven independent professional woman, who is the perfect partner for my main Shep who's ready to grab the 2nd chance at life Lazarus has given him.

I actually go out of my way to have specific reasons why each of my Shepards choose their specific LIs that usually tie into their background, personalities and sometimes class choices:

Spacer War Hero Paragrade Sentinal chooses Tali because even as an aggressive, hard-nosed field commander who intimidates enemies and allies alike with his mighty biotic powers and formidable tech armor he's also a closet geek with an interest in advanced technology.  I headcanon that the improvements to the Sentinel class through the Trilogy were made with Tali's help and they end up together due to mutual interests as well as mutual attraction.

Earthborn War Hero Paragrade Vanguard is the fun-loving Shepard with a mischievous streak; she actually romances Liara at first because the idea of seducing the naive virgin girl is enticing. Not the most noble reason but given that Liara goes out of her way to have a hand in Shepard's resurrection makes the relationship grow deeper; and given that Liara herself becomes somewhat darker and more calculating over time while worring, also makes her more appealing. This Shepard I essentially treat as a bisexual xenophile; I've contemplated having her move on to a romance Garrus too due to the comedic value that would fit with this particular characterization.

Colonist Ruthless Renegon Infiltrator chooses Jack because he empathizes with her due to the parallels in their life;  both had traumatizing childhoods and vented their frustrations out at the world in less than healthy ways.  This Shepard lost his family and homeworld and used his duty to enact revenge on the Batarians just as Jack lost any semblance of a normal childhood and her innocence and saw a life of crime and murder as the best means to survive.  Yet that does not mean neither are incapable of more noble acts, nor does it mean that they do not deserve a degree of happiness and they find that in one another.

Colonist Sole Survivor Renegon Soldier is an ice-cold militant with a heart of stone but with a soft spot in it for Garrus, who despite being an alien is ironically the sole thing that humanizes her.  I also like to think part of her attraction is rooted in her respect for Turian culture in general as she admires them for their discipline.  Despite her brutal pragmatism, she is something of a stickler for decorum and discourages Garrus' more renegade tendencies not only because she feels it is unprofessional and impractical, but also because she subconsciously wants him to be a better person then herself.

Earthborn Ruthless Paragon Engineer I actually headcanon as being deeply in the closet in ME1 and only starting to come out of it by 2; she's fully out by 3 where she romances Samantha though I also headcanon that everyone figured she was a lesbian long ago except herself.  She actually hooks up with Shiera the Consort and romances Liara (what with asari being the "discount" lesbian romances) though she breaks up with the latter and then has a "secret" affair with Kelly as to avoid addressing the issue, though it is also something of a meta-commentary on how ME handled same-sex romance until 3.  This frustration manifests in more angry Renegade behavior early on which is rooted in her own sense of self-loathing and inadequacy which gradually shifts to more sociable Paragon behavior as she becomes more comfortable in her own skin. Samantha helps Shepard come to terms with who she is while Shepard herself helps Samantha deal with the changes that come with being forcibly conscripted into military service and experiencing the horrors of war.

Spacer Ruthless Renegade Adept is by far the most despicable Shepard I have; in addition to being an amoral sociopath he's also a chronic womanizer who will gladly love-em and leave-em, or kill-em if it comes to that. He romances Ashley and saves her in Virmire just for the chance to bed her only to kill her later. He has casual sex with Jack and later seduces a distraught Tali who just lost her father and got exiled. Subsequently, he lets her own people get butchered by the Geth and doesn't even bother trying to stop Tali from commiting suicide.  And right after that he sleeps with Diana Allers and then kicks her off the ship. He is an evil, evil man.

I picked Tali because I liked her personality much more than Liara's. It was generally funnier, cuter, and more relatable, as she isn't a millenium spanning blue goddess.

And of course I thought they might just show us her face...which I guess they did.....kinda.

I've done all the Straight male romances, and all of them have a place in my heart
but my canon Paragon/Spacer/War Hero is a Ash, and My Renegades are Liara/Tali

My canon FemShep went for Garrus because he's her best friend who's been there for her through everything. After Kaidan, she realized that the love of her life was with her this whole time. He's funny, loving, adorkable, and protective. His voice is pretty damn sexy too. Plus, he's a total turian bad-boy ;)

By coincidence I didn't have any interest in Garrus until ME2.  In ME1, I was all for Shenko.  So I guess I felt the same as my FemShep as the story progressed.

Garrus. I liked how the relationship between Shepard and Garrus evolved from a mentor-student type thing to one more on equal grounds in ME2. I loved how easily and seamlessly their friendship progressed into something more romantic, and quite frankly, it reminded me the way my boyfriend and I ended up together. He's my best friend as well as my boyfriend, and I loved that I could emulate that in Shepard and Garrus.

Also he's got an insanely hot voice. Like. *whistles* I was hooked from the minute I heard him on the Citadel in ME1.

Garrus 1000% pretty much for the above stated reasons.

All my Shepard's have found someone to share their life with. Sometimes they ended up with someone else than I had originally planned just because how well the mesh with that character. Part of the joy of playing, I'm never a 100% sure of how a PT will turn out.

I've gone through as an LI to Tali, Jack, Miranda, Ash, Liara. And as one femShep, went through the motions with Kaidan but felt that the character really liked Thane. That is where things went despite already knowing how ME3 played out...

In ME1, I was sort of going through the motions with Ash and especially Liara, as it was actually sprightly Tali I had always been curious about. Thought she might be good for my less-grizzled Paragon/Vanguard main Shep if that were ever possible. So ME2 really did right by me there, and "Tali-Shepard" is my primary and now on a few separate Sheps.

Jack is the other LI I was honestly enthused about. Really animated and spunky, that one. She seemed a good fit for my even-split Renegade/Paragon, kind-of Zod-looking Adept Shep. And she is.

Lastly, yet of note, I was late to Miranda as LI since it seemed...too obvious. Hot, human, and you deal with her from the first stages of the game. So she sort of got lost between the "why not?" Ash/Liara romances and the true enthusiasm for Tali and Jack. But she does make for a good LI as I lately discovered.

In ME 1 it was Kaiden, of course but he really pissed me off in ME2, then pissed me off even more when he was accusing me of cheating in ME3 when he was the one that walked away from me! So I basically got rid of all of my Kaiden romances. Before ME 3 came out - I had all of my saves with Thane as my LI; I really like his character and the entrance he makes in ME2 is awesome!

I then made a Garrus LI just so I would have more variety and he ended up blowing me away in ME2 and in ME3 he was even better. It is only Garrus for me now  and I play the citadel in my head as if it is after the ending when he rescues me from the rubble.

My main LI are:
 Kaidan:
because... well, superficially THA VOICE<3 and his
eyes…and he just seamed to fit my FemSheps.  In me1 He was /IS her rock. His quite
personality and level headiness works balances Sheps’ larger than life
personality. In ME2 yeah let’s not go there *stupid Horizon* in Me3 I love how
he comes into his own, and yes he does question Shepard, but he proves he is a
Loyal Friend in the end. And now with the new DLC… I have renamed it the “Kaidan
wants some” DLC due to how flirty he gets when romanced.

And thanks to Sbarge’s awesome performance and BioWare’s writing,
I can never bring myself to kill Kaidan.

Steve: again THA VOICE<3 and those eyes.  [gee can’t guess what I’m attracted to:P}
and the same sort of deal as with Kaidan. But I love how he changes when you romance him.
Steve becomes more Fun, Flirty and Sweet. I can deal with the “Dead Husband”
thing, because of well... canon.  My Shep
[who was a Renagon ]  and Steve needed
something more to live for, and found it in each other. And plus Steve was the
reason I made a ManShep.

one of these days I will make a Garrus Shep...but he is more a bro to me.[ same with Tali]  and i can't bring myself to romance anyothers. i did try a Jacob mance, but the the diologue made me turn off my  sound...Liara annoyed me form the get go. Ashley, sorry, never lives past Virmire. Thane, I did romance, but we all know how that ended <_<, Jack, i may make a manshep for her oneday, but My Male Chacaters end up gay...Miranda, never really liked. Samantha is sweet, she is on the "Someday "pile..

Tali is the most goddamn adorable video game character ever.

She's smart, she's sincere, she has serious family and political issues, she's constantly being confronted by her in-bred discrimination of the Geth, and she's also a bit quirky and awkward. Nevertheless, what I always loved was the absolute honest care she has for Shepard - it's why everyone alway says she fits into the "male protector" dynamic, where at times she's so conflicted and sad she just needs someone to comfort her, and as such she genuinely cares for you.

It helps that her voice actor is absolutely brilliant.
I don't even need to see her face, just gimme a hug.

Shepard: "You two have been with me longer than most. You believed in me when nobody else did. Thanks"

Pretty much sums up my choices for both male and female Shepard.

[Only play Femshep]

Liara pretty much 95% of the way,
Smart. kind, cute, blue.

except on a few occasions I tried Garrus, which was awkward.... like having a friendship develop abruptly into a fling... and then failing.

I would have loved Miranda to be a s/s option.
Would have loved Mordin to be an LI option.

Cortez... because next time we can try under the bed, if you'd like.

After two games of trying unsuccessfully to get Kaidan's attention (and chasing off Liara, Miranda and the rest), my broShep finally found his man. Awesome voice acting.

kaidan was just so endearing from day one, my shep couldn't resist.
considering she's a little bit of a dork herself, they were just perfect for one another. she couldn't resist his little slip up whilst sightseeing on the citadel in ME :wub::wub:
he had her at "well, when you put it that way, there's no reason they wouldn't like you..."

Aside from Garrus and Tali like I mentioned earlier, I also like Miranda for MaleShep.  Oddly enough, it's not even about appearance because I find ME3 Ashley and Tali's face (unless you're trying to deny it's canon) hotter anyway.  I just find her really compatible with Shepard in terms of status and abilities and I liked her character development.  I found the renegade kiss scene more amusing than the awkward and abrupt "I really really like you" conversations Shepard has with the other LIs (including Miranda's paragon choice) and she's one of my most used squadmates next to the ME trilogy duo mentioned above.  Also, in terms of storytelling, I think Miranda as an LI makes her impulse resignation from Cerberus in ME2 and her multiple private meetings with Shepard in ME3 much more believable.  Her overall development seems to make more "sense" if she's an LI.

I'm also one of the few people that actually supports the Garrus and Tali pairing so I'm fine with letting Garrus have Tali and having Shepard go with Miranda.  At first, I worried that Bioware acknowledged many Miranda LI critics who claim that she's just a booty call with her lack of content but the Citadel DLC made up for that.  I also find it interesting how she only shows her strongest feelings towards Shepard when she realizes she's going to lose him, ie: she only says "I love you" when she's about to die and she's the only LI that cries when you dump her.  That had to be intentional in terms of her character design.

Although those 3 are my favourite, I like all the romances in the ME series.  I feel they all cater towards different people and preferences and I like that they all tell very different stories.

Liara from the beginning and never doubted it. I kinda fell in love with her in ME1 and went crazy about her in ME2&3. Why? I felt a connection with her from the start, and she's everything i love in a woman; smart, nerdy, kicks ass, speaks her mind, shows her feelings and sexy. Blue and alien just sums it all up :D

So much more to say why I chose her that it would make this post really long, so I'm keeping it simple...for now. At one point, i couldn't resist from creating a realistic photo of her. Thought i'd share it here also incase other Liara fans stumble upon this post :)

Miranda.  She's really the only one who I feel is Shepards equal. She's deadly, decisive, highly capable, incredibly intelligent, and damned near indestructible. She'll also live as long as Shepard, him being a cyborg and all.  She's also responsible for Shepard even being alive.  Throw in hot to boot and you've got my vote!  I also like her focus on family, especially because she'll never have one of her own. Shep gets her all to himself.
