Recently, I was reading an interview on The Witcher 3 with Michał Platkow-Gilewski and Jakub Rokosz.  Since TW3 is going to be open world, they were talking about the unique complications that offers.  One of the things they covered was the sheer number of NPCs and the difficulty of providing unique dialogue for each one.  I believe they even referenced Skyrim's "I used to be an adventurer like you, then I took an arrow in the knee" that was spammed all over the game.  It got me thinking...there's got to be some way to provide unique dialogue to the majority (if not all) the NPCs with out the budget for voice actors going through the roof.

What about fan contributions?  Would it be possible to release the script on the dialogue of non-essential characters and have fans do their own voice contributions?  What technical limitations would arise from that?  Could it be done?  Just something I was thinking about.

That's actually an interesting thought. I'm sure fans of The Witcher series, and other franchises most likely could provide some decent voice over work.

Making them into dialogue cutscenes could be challenging: lip-synching, pacing, getting the dialogue context right, adjusting their cinematic direction to fit the line, for example.

Interesting idea, but I think the game designers would be more dependant on the fan voice line contributions than vice versa. Don't know if it's worth the trouble, even if it would be free.

I'm giving the benefit of doubt to CDPR's sandbox concept, but I still think a Gothic like open world would fit the Witcher narrative better than the TES one.

The issue with having fan contributions is that there is nothing you can do to standardize the quality of equipment the fan has. Depending on the mic used, the room setup, ambient noise, etc., the output from one fan may differ significantly from another. Not to mention that opening it up to fans of multiple nations means you have many different accents, cadences, and most importantly, different pronunciations of made-up words (and even real English words).

And it would all be moot if the game were a union gig. Since most major games are, as far as I know, all the performers would need to be members of a professional trade union such as SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) or ACTRA (Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television, and Radio Artists) in North America.

(After some research, it seems productions can hire some non-union performers if it has a certain minimum number of union performers, so go nuts.)

Yeah, that was my biggest concern.  It would be something else if someone figured out how to implement this properly.  Perhaps have fans physically come to the studio?  I can understand unions being wary of this, but if paid voice actors and actresses were used for all essential roles in the game, and fans contributions were used just for non-essential NPCs...well, it beats hearing one-liners over and over again relentlessly!

I wonder if developers would be comfortable leaking the script like that, even if just non-plot related.
