I would like to, but Origin and my system will not allow me to do so. I hate Tech.

I wish I could play ME1 again.  It's my favorite of the trilogy.

But knowing how it all ends up, I simply can't enjoy it anymore. :(

I thought MEHEM was working for you? You build up a tolerance or something?

MEHEM makes ME3 playable as its own game.  And even then I only play it when a new version comes out.

But trying to do a trilogy playthrough?  It makes it glaringly obvious how poorly put together the trilogy is.  It's blatantly obvious there was zero planning going into this IP.  How choices were trivialized or ignored.  How my Shepard gets jerked around as Mac Walters' personal chew toy.  .

I think of of starting up ME1, and playing it knowing the direction the franchise goes in, it's just too sad. I see how the potential was simply wasted.

Someday I might be able to play ME1 again.  I mean, I can watch the first two Alien movies and not think about where that franchise went afterwards.  I'm just not there yet.

I really only do trilogy runs at this point. I might, at some point, replay ME3 with the first two Shepards that I imported, because none of the DLC was out except the Day 1 stuff at the time, but otherwise it's all-or-nothing for me.

Shepard's only canonical death, the subsequent resurrection, and cooperation with Cerberus were Karpyshyn's responsibility, though.

I can't start in the middle of the series. I have absolutely no connection with that Shepard when I do.

Then Bioware's personal chew toy.  If you want to split the difference.

ME1: You're an Alliance Marine and the first human spectre. You're saving the galaxy. You feel like a hero. You say dumb things like "I thought Asari needed other species to reproduce."

ME2: You're with Cerberus. Act like it. It's an Arnold movie. Don't think too much about it. Have fun. Play Renegon. (75% renegade) Pretend Shepard sounds like Arnold, well except for femShep.

ME3: Arnold returns and tries to act with emotions. Don't think too much. The story is best enjoyed under the influence so it's glaring flaws are overlooked. Agaiin play renegon and stay in character. You were with Cerberus once. You saw the light, but it doesn't mean you're goody two shoes all of a sudden. Morality always takes a back seat to pragmatism. You're a Spectre. Get the job done no matter the cost.

That's more like it. Which makes sense: Shepard's been the "chew toy" since his/her brain was scrambled, filtered, and crammed full of doomsday images by the series' original writer, whether the player wanted that or not.

I poked around on Google for a bit to find a picture that I think describes this. This is the least offensive one I saw.

We're not deluding ourselves into thinking any differently, right?

I mean, really. When meek, mild, law abiding people like to post about how 'evil' they are...surely we all realize it's the precise same thing as these pictures of kids holding up knifes and photoshoping flames and skulls on Facebook, dressed up slightly with a facade of poorly reasoned philosophy.

Am clueless, but it would not play until I declared it. Then the DLC will not activate; code or no code, so no more ME1 unless I reinstall, I guess.

The Mass Effect 3 ending was a lesson not to self-insert in a Role Playing Game. I did it in my first play of ME3. Killing the Geth was not the evil choice because it was an either or choice due to no peace option, and every single Geth except for Legion I'd encountered had shot at me. No quarian had shot at me with intent to kill me. I'd told Gerrel to counterattack - my bad. Wreav was a loose cannon. And it turned out that the Rachni decision didn't matter. I still got the same three choices in the end, except no Geth being held over my head. So bye bye Starbrat!

But now I will never self-insert in a role playing game again. There will always be this memory of the ME3 ending blocking it. The characters are always pixels on the screen now. The immersion has been killed. In fact, ME3 nearly killed my love of gaming.

Remember to not just self-insert, but don't touch the slate at all.  Let Biwoare make the picture for you.  They're the professionals, they know better than you what kind of Shepard you should be playing.

I never self-insert, but that's because I'd find it boring. I know who I am. I like crafting new characters with different personalities and see how they develop, I put myself in their shoes but they're different people. I get quite attached to them this way. Unless..

It's hard for me to understand how someone could be capable of direct self-insertion before ME3, anyway. If ME1's decision limitations and plot demands didn't do it, then ME2's intro and railroading (both in regards to Cerberus cooperation and the ambushes outside the player's control) should have definitely killed that idea. I have a Shepard who's kinda close to mirroring what I'd do in the situation, but I can't even get through ME1 without thinking numerous times: "I'd actually do that instead."

Shepard is informed by player decisions, but the character isn't completely controlled by them.  It's always been like that.

I enjoy the ME series, but the Paragon/ Renegade mechanics made this a less enjoyable RP experience. I was not able to truly choose freely until my second playthrough, so not to lose anyone further along the game.

That said, ME1 is my fave in the series, and really liked how Achievements meant something to future sessions.

I wouldn't mind seeing something similar to Vader Sessions for Mass Effect, though this is funnier in part because it uses James Earl Jone's voice.
