Hey guys, I always noticed how many users here on BSN like Steve Cortez and gay Kaiden Alenko as their LIs. While Bioware is famous for a few gay characters on games like Dragon Age II and all, I think they took things to a new level of realism on ME3.

I find this move a little weird, specially because in my mind Shepard always acted straight on ME1 and 2. But that’s not the point here.

As a straight gamer and all, this got me to realize something: Ive never met a gay gamer in my life!

Do you guys choose those characters as your Lis because of your sexual orientation or just for storytelling purposes?

This is not a hate thread or anything like that, I’m just curious.

I think it has more to do with personality and character.

I'm a lot of things, but straight isn't one of them.

That said, I pick my LIs based on how well they mesh with my current Shepard's personality.

I guess it's a combination of both really. As a lesbian, I feel more attracted towards the female characters, although if they don't have a decent story, I won't bother with them.

I'm Pan, but I wouldn't say that I choose them solely because of my orientation so much as for storytelling purposes. It's a mixture of both, since a couple of my Sheps are gay and its nice to be able to roleplay that element since Shepard by extension does kind of represent me in-universe. I'm glad they included Cortez as an SS exclusive LI, but I felt the setup to a relationship with him was kinda contrived and generic, although I did like him alot as a character. They did a far better job with Traynor in my opinion.

I wouldn't lock in an LI I didn't like just for storytelling purposes.

I choose it because its more content I haven't seen yet. Each of my playthroughs feature characters that let me see something new. I pick my LIs based on who meshes best with the current Shep's personality.

Cortez's romance scenes in Citadel were really sweet. And I didnt have to be gay to appreciate that.

I know quite a few number of female gamers choose gay romance as well as a few straight guys.

My canon files is usually gay, but that is not to say I don't have straight alternative files. The idea of the "straight white male" superhero saving the world just seems like too much of a cliche for me. I guess that factored in my decision in choosing a gay, non-white (custom) hero.

I pick the LIs based on whether they fit my character's personality. Kaidan is very supportive and understanding of Shep, and that's why I pick him. I'm not a fan of Cortez at all, even if he's the exclusive gay character. My two main ME files have Shepard romance Kaidan and Tali, my Origin romances are Alistair (gay mod) and Morrigan, my DA2 files are (Male Hawke) Anders and (Male Hawke) Isabela. I romance based on who I like best, I suppose.

If I thought Kaiden or Cortez were actually interesting characters I wanted to explore I'd engage in a love interest with them.

Edit: because it matters to inform this guy's opinion, I'm not gay.

I always roleplay self-interested, self-righteous, powerhungry, arrogant, privileged, duchebags w/ God complexes. So basically, I don't go for romance subplots in general based on my RP'ing "style". Roleplaying should always take precedence over romancing an NPC purely because you wish to see such and character's bumholes, imo.

Re: Cortez, Alenko and Tranor,  I've seen similar straight characters in video games, tv, film, and other media doing similar things. At the end of the day, it's cool. I have one lesbian family member and it's nice to see media representation of LGBT people as, well, basically people first with whatever their sexual identity is as just one of many characteristics. People are people. Who else remembers watching Babylon 5 back in the day (yeah I'm old) with little throwaway lines and plot points of people having same-sex partners and not really making a big deal of it? I guess what that show was pushing was the idea that "in the future, humans won't consider this a big deal."

There are a lot more than you think. I know a lot of people who are not only gamers but actually work in the industry (For several years I worked for an, ahem, rather well-known American online gaming platform and know them personally and professionally). They're out there.

I dunno. I'm straight but generally speaking I only stuck to several LI's in the ME trilogy due to who was available at the time. I actually had a Femshep who went for Liara in ME1 only to ditch her when Garrus came along. Because Garrus was Garrus. ;) Likewise, my broshep always seems to either end up with Liara and Tali. And I always seem to end up killing off Kaidan. If he ever ends up surviving into one of my playthroughs of ME3, who knows?

The only time I ever ended up with a same-sex LI in a Bioware game was in DA2 and it was by accident -- what happened to me was literally the same thing that happened to Yahtzee's Hawke as referenced in his Zero Punctuation review of that game.

I think it has mostly to do with the fact that Shep acts as a extention of myself in the game, I’m not making any
stereotypical observation here.

But still, I have never seen Shep look differently at a male in ME1 and 2. Even if you never romance a female
character, he never gives that vibe away, you know? But that's just me saying.

And you are probably right about the "I just don't know it yet" bit

There's the little cutscene that plays before you talk to Kaidan on the normandy in ME1.  There's definitely something going on there
