you don't need to be gay to play a character who romances people of the same gender, also you're not obliged to play a femShep just because you're female (and boy, do I hate the posts that automatically assume as much.)

my first playthrough of ME1 was as a femShep however, but I only romanced everyone by being nice and then had to decide when Kaidan and Liara forced the issue - I thought 'they'd never let you do *that*' and picked 'threesome' ;) so Kaidan left).
I have to admit it never would have occured to me to want to romance Kaidan with a male Shepard if I hadn't seen the modded pre-Ilos scene on Youtube, but afterwards Kaidan just seemed to be the most suitable LI for the way I play my main Sheps.
There are others and with those I'll romance other people - for science! ... or just becaue it fits that respective character.

So basically, I pick my LI because I can see them as someone my player character - the way I roleplay them in any given plathrough - would like and they would fit together because of their characters.
If Kaidan hadn't been an option for male Shepard in ME3 I wouldn't have romanced Steve just beause he's gay.

With all the fight for equality today, it's understandable that developers put same sex relationship in their games. It make the game appeal to a larger group of player, and help increasing their sale.
It's kinda fun though. Both my girlfriend and me enjoy playing video games, especially ME. One day she saw me romance Liara with my fem shep then she asked me if guys enjoy seeing girls kissing each other. Well, it's new, and fun, and sexy at the same time I guess. And then the next day she made a male Shep and go all out with Cortez xD Anyhow, I guess part of us, even if we are straight, we still curious about the third gender, that's why sometimes we pursuit same sex relationship in games.
And I think it's a good thing really. Some people see gays or lesbians as evils and stuffs. It's bull****, of course. But it's because they don't know them, don't know how they deal with their lives, which led to a lot of misunderstandings. At least, with same sex relationships become more popular with media, and video games, hope some of those people will learn to accept people of the third gender.
