I use the console commands for Kaidan's romance in ME1. I don't like modding games but since it's just accessing cut content it doesn't feel like I'm changing any intended developer canon bla

If you were being rude to him at the hospital and mars then being hostile to him during the standoff, you may get friendzone by him.

That explains it for me.  MascShep was rude to him, especially on Mars with the WTH questioning of whether of not he was a terrorist with Carebears.

He'd move on regardless, but at least femShep can get one slap in. I'm not sure if Thane or Jacob fans have it worst with ME3 to be honest.

That'll do it. I hear you can be rude to him on Mars and still salvage it in the hospital scenes. It may also depend on whether you imported or started a new game in ME3. If you are rude to him on Mars and the hospital, he is friendzoned, If you are rude to him on Mars and don't visit him at all, he is killed. I think that's how it works.

Definitely Jacob. Thane dies, but FemShep knew the risks before entering that relationship, and still has really touching scenes with him. Jacob betrays her trust, and then is a dick about it. Both romances ended horribly, though.

Really? My friend didn't talk to Ash at all and was able to convince her to put down the gun. I'm assuming that it's the same thing with Kaidan.

I agree that there should've been same-sex LI's from the start, but how is the mere option of gay romances a retcon. The fact that they exist doesn't mean Bioware is saying "Your Shepard is gay/bi.". If your Shep is straight, then he/she is, simple as that.

The way I see it, gay Shepard didn't fraternize with Kaidan in ME1 because he was just put in Command, and he wanted to be professional. None of the ME2 squaddies swung that way, and Kaidan was unavailable. In ME3, he realized there was a strong possibility of losing this war, so he may as well enjoy life while he still can.

That's how I played it as well. I don't like it when people say Shepard being gay is contrived simply because same sex romance (for the male)was unavailable or because he didn't "act" gay. Like you can act gay or that all gay men are stereotypes you see in movies. My Shep was focused on killing Saren and stopping the reapers from coming through in ME1 but found himself drawn to Kaidan who was calmer than him and very down to earth and soulful. But sleeping with fellow soldiers is a no go. In ME2, my guy was a **** who banged every woman who allowed him to. Sexual frustration.. In ME3, his life was on the line and there was no time to play around. Plus Kaidan was back in his life and well it all just fell into place. Now they have an apartment on the citadel where they live together and throw parties. :wizard:

I don't actually know. I could never let things get bad enough that Kaidan doesn't survive the coup. I know it's possible to get to the point where you can't talk him down and one of your squadmates will take the shot (like Wrex on Virmire), but I don't know how. I know not visiting him makes it harder to convince him during the coup.

Maybe your friend was nice to Ashley on Mars and that was enough? I think you have to be a complete ass on Mars and never visit them in the hospital.

Exactly. The Kaidan romance was tastefully done. The conversation during their lunch scene works well, and the two of them finding comfort in eachother and eventually falling in love makes sense.

A lot of women hit on FemShep.  I can't say I blame them.  She is the most awesome woman in the galaxy.

I wonder why s/s was available to FemShep from the beginning but not broShep.

My first time playthroughs often have gay LIs (ME3, DA:O, DA2) just because it's nice to play games where this is even an option. And, being gay, it is nice to see them in the games I play. I relate to them more.

In further playthroughs I'm totally open to romancing whoever feels right at the time.

I also think ME3 actually did a good job balancing canon straight, canon gay and optional LIs. Making everyone bisexual a la DA2 does slightly something away from the characters. In DA;O, being bisexual was an interesting extra quirk to Leliana and Zevran that said something about their characters, but this was lost in DA2. I think ME3 did it pretty much right.

Because Bioware's assumed sci-fi-fan target audience stereotypically have much less of an issue with lesbian romances than gay male ones?

Majority of gamers are straight males.
It's just a matter of statistics - typically straight males don't want to watch two men kiss :?
Plus it was what 6 years ago it came out

Because lesbians are hot. If you look at the record of ME series, the game was made for straight male crowd.
1. An entire race of female-only.
2. Lesbian romance in all 3 games
3.  7 LIs for straight males,4 lesbians, gay males and straight females both have 2 options by the end of the game.
4. M/M romance wasn't available until the last game, and I suspect that it wouldn't have been available at all if there weren't complains and petitions.

This is not meant to attack the ME team, but it's obvious that the game was made with certain interests in mind. Not that I blame them or even fault them for it since it makes financial sense to appeal to the largest crowd.

I guess so.  I don't fit into the target demographic as a female.  Meh.  I'm just glad that gay romances are finally available for both sexes now.

I think you are exactly right, not cynical at all.

I'm happy that as a female player I got s/s options, but I know that they added them to the game for guys who think "lesbians are hot," not really for me.

I'm glad that ME3 had options for male s/s romance though, I just think it should have been included from the beginning.

I did it because of finally being able to finally romance someone with my shepard that is both charming and deep. I am very grateful to bioware for it. Homophobia in the gaming community is very prevalent and it pisses me off.

BSN, with all it's quirks, is remarkably tolerant. Either Mass Effect fans are more accepting than average gamers, or the moderators do a great job of discouraging homophobia on these boards. It's nice to be able to behave like everyone else on these boards and not have to worry about the blowback.

I agree, BSN as a whole when it comes to homophobia doesn't act like a giant tool, and of course there are those special cases of stupidity. Nothing to worry about since they're in the minority.

I've read a lot of blogs from gay gamers who enjoyed Bioware games because of the inclusion of gay romance.

I think the consensus is that
1. It's not well executed, and certainly not equal in options.
2. But no one else even tries to do it, anyway.

Despite never really playing a character as my own personal avatar, I can understand why some people would like to see videogame fruition of their real life sexual preference if it were truly so underrepresented as the case of s/s.

In response to the OP, I almost never play as a straight male character.... because I am a straight male character in real life, and I don't want to play my real life.
Hence, my main character was a renegade female s/s character who usually chose Liara. My second character is a paragon female who chose Garrus (but never Kaidan).

(I think in real life I'd be someone like Maelon, Rana Thanoptis or Wilson... which is depressing)

I was honestly underwhelmed with the homosexual romances I was provided in the game. The straight audience at least gets some eye candy and variance. I have to choose between Blandy McBlanderson or I get someone's dead-husband-rebound.

My Shepards are awful lonely.

You should be grateful you even got any for Mass effect 3.

That's fine. I don't mind it when people are antagonistic and standoffish with me for no reason.

It's cool, dude.

No reason, you want a similar amount of options that straight shep gets.
Going from 0 to possibly 6 in just one game.
Not to mention not everyone is gay or bi.

He was objecting to the perceived lack of quality, rather than the quantity, of male homosexual romance options.

The conception that "the majority of gamers are straight males" is outdated (if it was ever right to begin with). While high-end English-language RPGs like Mass Effect might skew male (and rich and North American), the gaming community as a whole is pretty much representative of humanity. I work for a game industry company and our team is always making sure that "grandma" doesn't get forgotten.

http://www.theesa.co.../gameplayer.asp (note US-only)

My hat is off to Bioware for the inclusivity of ME3. Can't wait for more in whatever's next.

As a straight gamer and all, this got me to realize something: Ive never met a gay gamer in my life!

How strange. Having read many forums and played many online games, I've come to the conclusion that nearly everyone on the internet is gay, especially gamers and youtubers.

My femshep went for Liara since I couldn't stand the way Shep moved when talking to Kaidan in ME1. Same with Jacob in ME2. Not into scales either, so that ruled out Thane and Garrus. Never talked to Chambers, respect Samara, airlocked Allers and got turned down by the two most likeable males in the series: Steve and James. Oh wait, three, Joker too. And then the only romancable nerd in the game was a girl... Choices, choices.

I'll probably do a Kaidan-Thane romance, since I do like both of them. Thane more, but of course he's scaly and dies.

On my manshep, all romances feel awkward so he's not getting any. He's mine, space Barbies!

I'm not sure if this is the case of the grass being greener on the other side because I saw quite a few straight guy or girl have the hot for either Samantha or Cortez. I don't quite care for Cortez, but I was pretty disappointed when Alistair wasn't the gay option, although it didn't stop me from making him one with the mod.

The two situations are completely opposite when you think about it, Thane dies, but he loves Shepard even into the afterlife. If you believe that Thane's ghost wasn't a hallucination, it could be that he's still continuously watching over her. Jacob, on the other hand, dumed Shepard after not seeing each other for only 6 months. Kaidan waited for Shepard for 2 years, and during that time, he believed Shepard was dead. I didn't romance Jacob because I find him bland, but for those who romanced him, it must have been tough. We know Thane was going to die while Jacob has no prior indication that he would cheat, except dumping Miranda and say to Shepard that their relationship is just casual. One is alive but dump you while the other is dead but love you forever.
