I'm a lot of things, but straight isn't one of them.

That said, I pick my LIs based on how well they mesh with my current Shepard's personality.

That being said I doubt I'll ever do a gay romance with Kaiden or Steve but I am at least glad that it is done realistically instead of Shepard suddenly going 'hey I'm gay!' you decide whether he or she is or not naturally instead of the game seeming to force it like dragon Age II seems to 'force' all of your companions being bisexual.

About straight men playing female characters & the perception of homosexuals in games

As a gay dude, I relate to the male perspective and prefer to stare at a male character, so I get the best of both worlds. The only conflict I have is wanting to see more female lead characters because they are underrepresented, while not actually wanting to play a female character myself.

Shepard is the first and only openly gay character I have ever played. I was accustomed to straight being the default, so I never knew what I was missing. Playing gay Shepard was a bigger deal to me than I ever anticipated. Even when I used to play table top RPG's where I have complete control over my character, I've made them straight for the benefit of the people I was playing with.

I'm hungry for more. I want to play more games that have gay characters. I often hear the opposition say things like "Why make the characters gay at all? It's a game, sexuality shouldn't matter!" I can kind of understand where they are coming from, but they take for granted the fact that most games are wrought with sexuality. Mario and Peach being a couple serves no gameplay function whatsoever, but no one complains about her smooching him every time she gets rescued. I'm not asking for a gay version of Mario, but if I don't see why it has to be intergral to the plot or a defining aspect of the character in order to justify him being gay, while it's perfectly acceptable to have a character who is definitely straight just because.

The movie Boondock Saints did a pretty good job have this, in a way. They had a character that was totally badass, and the fact he was gay was no big deal. I do have issues with the way he treated the guy he is in bed with (my guess is they were just trying to make it easier for the audience to digest the fact that he sleeps with men), but they could have just as easily not addressed his sexuality and the movie would have lost nothing.

Acting straight, acting gay?

It seems to me like you got some solid advice. I myself am not overtly effeminate ( or hyper masculine for that matter). My speech and behavior are what society would typically associte with a straight guy. I had a slow coming out process. I told all my friends and family one at a time. I didn't get a single "I knew all along" or "that doesn't surprise me." Pretty much everyone I told was shocked. I do fit some gay stereotypes (my iTunes playlist is probably about 50% broadway musicals), but otherwise I'm just a guy who wants a monogomous, long-term relationship with another guy. The Shepard/Kaidan romance really resonated with me because that's the kind of relationship I relate to. There is no distinguishable difference between gay Kaidan and straight Kaidan.

There are some characters where it's appropriate to be on the flamboyant side, but if the fact that he's gay shouldn't be the only reason for that.

Why I care as a S.W.M.

I really appreciate your perspective. It means a great deal to have your support, and like minded people like o Ventus. Thank you for posting.

Being effeminate or masculine in no way is any guarantee that someone is either gay or straight these days. I've known effeminate people who are bigger horn dogs about the opposite sex then I'd ever be being straight myself and I've known masculine people who don't care if people know they are gay or not and keep to themselves so I hate that whole misconception that because someone has a specific personality that must mean they are this way.

I like to choose romances based on personality, which reflects my real world views of "gender isn't important, so long as you're in love."
Though I will admit, ME3 is the closest a game has come to not making me feel embarrassed by the gay relationships. :P

I'm a straight dude who played a mostly paragon "canon" Femshep who romanced no one in ME1, romanced Jacob in ME2 (yeah, that's right, JACOB), and Liara in ME3 (never thought I would but I grew to love Liara and my Shep's relationship so much I was kind of relieved when Jacob's ****ty character arc gave me an "out"). In paper RPGs, I've probably played a 50/50-split of male and female characters.

In other videogame RPGs, to name some, my Fallout 1 PC was male (no romances in the game so no idea what his sexual orientation was, but canon says he went on to have a wife, so...), Fallout 2 PC was a bisexual female, in Fallout 3 I had one male (my canon one; again, no romance) and one female (my totally evil, psycho, for-the-hell-of-it one; no romance), and in New Vegas I played one canon straight male. In Skyrim my canon Dragonborn is straight male and my second character is an asexual female non-Dragonborn (totally avoiding the main quest).

Either I think it's not hard for me to "relate" to female PCs or I think relating to my PCs is irrelevant. I write a lot, and have had main characters who are about 50/50-split sex-wise, so I think I've always approached game PCs as a writer does, not as me vicariously playing an alter ego.

Curiously (for me), I've also played some gay or bi-women but never a gay male... that might have to do with my sexual orientation, I guess, since I don't think real life homosexuality is bad in any way, but I must obviously be biased towards my exclusive attraction to women. All that said, I am not a hyper-masculine dudebro and have always tended to befriend, hang out with and form deeper friendships with women than guys. So those are some random facts from a fellow ME fan for whatever they're worth.

I am straight but I don't mind when my fem shep dates garrus in fact he is one of my favs. as for the cortez relationship I haven't done it cause my shep imports areall filled with LIs and the only reason I have traynor as an LI is cause thane died and my thanemancer was lonely. but I have seen the romance dialouge and such for cortez and it is well done. but I think it is more for personality. cause garrus is one of my favs LI and yet he is not a looker

At first I wanted James Vega as my Shepard's love interest, but when that option was never made available, I decided to go for Kaiden (a Sentinel with a Sentinel and he looked cute), but after the conversation where he and a Shepard talk about getting into a relationship, the two of them just felt really good together. Like they'd spent so long looking for someone they connected with, and they'd had it all along.

That said, my first LI was Jack (back when I first got introduced to ME through ME2 for the PS3), because I liked the emotional interaction between the two.

So my answer would be "a little of column A, a little of column B", though mostly column B.

Maybe because the writers said that Liara's not female? Even Bioware doesn't get it.

My sexuality is a bit non-linear. I am attracted to the person, not the gender, though being female and mostly being attracted to women leans me towards lesbian, but I am not strictly exclusive. That being said, My Sheps tend to have only 4 LI's, Garrus, Liara, Samantha and Kelly. The fact that I can have s/s relationships is awesome and I love BW for it. It's not perfect, but it is better than all others.

For whatever it's worth, after two games of - to put it bluntly - disappointment with regards to the lack of m/m option, ME3 really hit it out of the park with the Steve and Kaidan romances. The support post-release for romance content in DLC, particularly Citadel, was very impressive.

I was deeply cynical about the reasons given for the absence of male same-sex options for Shepard in ME2 (especially given Casey's incredibly unconvincing explanation for it), but pleasing to see this was rectified for the third game.

Wow, that's rough. It's funny that this example made me understand what it's like to feel like an outcast. Really, I have never thought about that aspect before... talk about being indoctrinated. Even if there are zero love scenes, most games don't leave a doubt in terms of your protagonist's sexual orientation. Be it a flirty remark, a backstory with an ex-wife, you name it.

Even if it's about the only thing I was positively surprised about regarding the writing of the recent Tomb Raider reboot, Lara being an attractive female is a non-topic throughout the game.

Well, in movies, how about basically every character Johnny Depp ever played? Still, I know hardly any women who would say no to him.

Like I said. When I'm lost in deep space with my cool space ship, I need a cool space crew to rely on. I don't know of any gay or straight varieties in oxygen, and even if so, I wouldn't give a damn.

It's just safe to assume, we won't be heading for any extrasolar journeys as long as we're still debating what backsides we should look at, rather than horizons.

Hmm personally... Uhm straight gamer as well.

Well I can't play as eg. a female shep either. Not because I'm threatened in my sexuality, but because I cannot immerse myself in the game. I wouldn't be playing a fem shep, or a gayshep, but rather I would be faking either. *lol* If that makes any sense.

In any case I'm just glad there is more choice and a better representation so more people (which might be as roleplay impaired as me) can enjoy the game.

When I'm presented a choice between two dreamy guys and a bunch of gals, of course, I'm gonna pick one of the guys. Before ME3, I tested every BroShep romance, but none of them felt particularly interesting. Liara and Kelly were available for FemShep, but where were all the options for gay BroShep? I know, I know, two girls are hot, but two guys are icky. Gotta love double standards.

I love all the Steve's content that ME3 has to offer. Far more so than Kaidan's. Dunno why people say that Steve's romance feels forced as it really is not. Shep's the one who makes the initiative, not Steve.
Citadel DLC brought a ton of new content for Steve and I savored it so much that my Shep is never gonna romance Kaidan again.

Honestly, being the guy that never has the heart to do anything different to see other content, I always thought Jacob in ME2 was a gay romance option. The way Shepard's tone and gesture changes when talking to him privately aboard the Normandy left me without a doubt that he's attracted to Jacob. As a guy, you can either compliment him at any given situation, or really just be a jerk.

And as for "double standards", I think this is a foundamentally wrong assumption, or choice of words. Because "two chicks are hot" is a statement both by and for straight males, who simply see two "objects of their sexual desire" naked. It's not them appreciating those women being outspokenly gay, for that matter.

Question for the gay guys here:

Does Shepard, throughout the series, represent you? Or are they Shepard, their own defined character?

It's a bit of both to be honest.

Shepard is his own defined character but I don't fully immerse in a WWSD.

I think its pretty obvious that there has been a lot more lesbian content over the course of the series as that is far more appealing straight male gamers. Which is one of the reasons I never play a lesbian FemShep. Too much pandering right there, its a bit sickly really.

Well, I spoke from experience. From what I've read and heard during my lifetime. People seem to approve f/f stuff more than m/m stuff. And I'm not talking about straight males only.
