Likely this has already been decided by the developers, but this is a discussion forum, so let's discuss! Posted Image

I don't know about you, but I found it really awkward to have my closest friends (especially my LI) call me by my last name throughout DAII. The strangeness was further compounded by the fact that I wasn't the only Hawke in the party.

How would you feel about the DA team choosing a unisex name to represent the protagonist? Would you be ok with that, or do you feel it would be taking a valuable part of the RP process out of the players' hands? Would the payoff be potentially worth it?

For fun, here's a list of unisex names that I don't think suck completely (although granted, some may be difficult to imagine working in the world of DA).

Personally i prefer the 1st name to be player chosen rather than set in stone. I was fine with the useof Hawke in Da2 and Shep in ME.

I prefer player chosen too, but I see how it could be considered annoying. IMO, NWN2 did it best by simply not voicing the character's name.

Example:

Subtitles say 'Hello, Lord Issa'
Voice says 'Hello'

It felt a lot more organic to me in Mass Effect where Shepard was military. She was also a much more set protagonist than what I feel like many DA fans (or even I) am looking for. But if we're going to be called something, I'm finding myself leaning toward a first name and a rank/title of respect rather than always being called by a last name. It gives the impression that you're not personable enough to be treated as an equal even by those closest to you (just my opinion, obviously).

Firstly, I really want to choose my characters first name. It's important to me that different playthroughs feel like they're different people.

If they want to have a unisex name then they should just make one up. Probably use an N as the ending. For example the default female CE warden name is Kallian, which I think could fit both sexes pretty easily.

In DA2, the ability to change my characters name lets me keep track of my multiple play throughs. It would get a bit confusing if they were all named Alex Hawke.

That could easily be fixed with custom save names.

I like naming my characters. I also have no problem with, nor do I find it awkward, calling the PC by his/her last name. But then again, I never use my husband's first name, so I might be weird.

Plus it makes it easier to keep track of all my playthroughs. It would've been a nightmare for me to have like 4 Marian Hawkes. (Edit: 'd by BoBear)

That's a great point. I wonder how hard it would be for the devs to have an auto-spelling difference in the text depending on gender? Michel/Michelle is a perfect example!

True. This is a definite downside.

I think people would complain and complain that more meaning full choice is being take away from them, but personally I think I wouldn't mind that much. I often forget the names of my character and my best used name (Hazar Kazra) came from the KOTOR name generator. I wouldn't mind giving up that freedom in exchange for them using my name.

But if you take a look at Dragon Age, people hardly differentiate between first and last name. Almost every character you met you either know as his/her last or front name, but never both. So I think it's not too implausible that in Thedas they just pick your first or last name and then it sticks.

No. My best way of differentiating between Hawkes in my head was by their first name and I absolutely love picking different names for characters, usually ones that make sense for the character somehow.

As an aside, I wasn't particularly bothered by everyone calling me "Hawke" because in my head I sort of subbed in whatever first name the character had. Same with "Warden" at least some of the time; often enough that seemed to be more of a title of respect.

Very true. In fact, that could even be a better option than just changing the first name.

I prefer to choose my character's name. The Hawke approach was never bad as the Shepard one. I mean, while most of the character called her Hawke, at least the letters and codex adknowledge that she has a first name and refers her by it.

But in Mass Effect, Shepard might as well be his first name. Never once was his name adknowledged, even on the Normandy memorial. That would've been a perfect opportunity to have his name shown, but no, we had to have just "Commander Shepard" instead. Not pleased.

I hate this idea. I still object to the fixed surname. That's also a terrible idea.

My first character in any fantasy CRPG is always "Sylvius the Mad". Any game that doesn't allow me that exact character name is a lesser game in my eyes.

I'd like that. Especially since I love using unisex names for female characters anyway. They sound so pleasantly un-girly

Well, I've nothing against set first name provided that I like it. Since a custom one is never used in-game, the RP part of choosing it is kinda lost in translation. Except when it's a character to whom I become very attached, in which case I'd rather name them myself. And also for keeping track of who's who in case of multiple playthroughs.

All this to say that I'm in two minds about that.

And they should be called Dominique. It's Orlesian enough, unisex, and a perfect fit for an Inquisitor :P

I support the unisex names. The fact my name was basically Hawke annoyed me. But if we ARE going to be Orlesian, I hope to the Maker they get a voice that doesn't make me want to rip my ears out.
