Also, Ryan and Reese are never ever in any aspects a female name.

Others have mentioned Reese Witherspoon, but I also know two completely unrelated Ryans who are women.  Interestingly, one of them has a traditionally feminine first name, but chooses to go by their middle name, Ryan.  The other's first name is Ryan and she hates it, and goes by her more traditionally feminine middle name.

So yeah, there are female Ryans.  Some of them like it, some of them don't.  Another anecdote:  my nephew's name is Morgan, and though it's traditionally a male name, he hates it because any time he's met another Morgan in school, it's been a girl.

Personally, it would be nice if people who were close to my player character could call them by their first name.  I'd miss being able to pick a name, but as long as we have a voiced, set, human protagonist, one more concession isn't going to kill me.

I prefer to pick my character's name. Even if unacknowledged by the game, it gives me a greater feeling of customization for the character. As for what people refer to you as, well, I guess that's the drawback. Strangers could refer to you by title. Most others could use surname. As for friends like the companions, I don't see why they constantly need to use any name. Most of the time I use my friends' names only when I want to get their attention. LIs can use pet names.

In fact, a set nickname the companions can use for you might be the best of both worlds.

DA2 overused Hawke a bit, but I really want to keep my custom first name.

Nah, I prefer having a strong sounding surname over all of those suggestions. They're very meh, I can't see a leader being referred to as Jess or Alex, they sound weak.

One nice feature in Codemasters games (Grid, Dirt 2, etc.) is that they will record all of the first names from a really big list as well as a list of nicknames (I go with Spanky, cuz, well my radio guy and the main menu lady will call me Spanky which is as fun as it sounds). That really isn't practical for Bioware to invest all the extra time/resources that something like this would entail, but maybe in the future when tech is such for easy voice emulation.

I'm not really in favor of a set first name at all, honestly. It's never really bothered me to be called "Warden" or "Commander" or "Hawke." I suppose if a set first name was going to happen one way or another, a unisex name would be better than two stereotypically male/female ones, but . . .

Eh, it's not my cup of tea. I very much enjoy choosing various first names that have meaning to me, chosen specifically for the character I'm playing. I put way too much thought into it and sometimes spend twice as long thinking of a name as making the actual character.

Still, most the names you suggested aren't bad. I'd just rather do it myself, I suppose.

I hate this idea. I still object to the fixed surname. That's also a terrible idea.

My first character in any fantasy CRPG is always "Sylvius the Mad". Any game that doesn't allow me that exact character name is a lesser game in my eyes.

That's funny.

In response to the thread, I think "no." Not a firm no, but a no nonetheless.

Remember a simular thread like this made by BobSmith101 some time back...

I do not really care if the protagonist is named or not. But can understand that it is important for a lot of players to name their character. Would be more important for me if the name I chose would be spoken ingame. Remember that that is not an option though mainly because of resources needed for that feature to be implemented.

While I enjoy being able to choose a name, I submit Linn/Lynne as a good name. Sounds the same between the masculine and feminine, while being subtly differentiated. (Also, Linn is my second-favourite boy's name after Ellis... probably a good thing I'm never having kids, huh.)

Or we could go with René/Reneé, since we're (probably) going to be in Orlais...

I like this idea. They could still let you choose your surname, and It would make conversations seem more personal, rather than being called by your surname during intimate/serious moments, which always struck me as odd. You could always meet halfway and have a unisex nickname that you are referred to by.

I think either Sam or Quinn would work best if we're going for a fixed first name.

Why stop there? The protaganist should be a hermaphrodite. That will also allow the PC to have all the love interests at the same time. Who's with me! :P

We really want to let the game choose our name now?

What's next - letting it choose my class?

The game already chose your name. It was Hawke.

A really, really, awkward, "let's make it your last name to trick you into thinking you have some player agency but we're really going to use it like a first name." name.

I'm  not thrilled about the general idea of not getting to choose my character's name, either, but geez -- not only was this already done anyway, but it was super weird being called by your last name in DAII.

Personally, I would be fine with this. It's always a little off putting when your romance only refers to my pc by their last name or your brother/sister only ever refers to you as your brother/sister. I just don't see the point in choosing a first name if it's never used. I'd rather be given a first name for story reasons.

It would be better than Hawke being called by last name, and introducing himself by last name when Bethany or Carver was also right there. However, a title and clever phrasing could avoid the need for a fixed name altogether, as in DAO. I don't think that would work with a voiced protagonist, but if it could, I would prefer that option.

Maybe a last name that can also double as a first sounding name?

But I wouldn't really mind this.

You know, this just made me realize how little it bothered me in DA:O that my companions never used my name. I also think that they rarely called me by my title (only outsiders did that... unless Zevran was being weird-flirty). Maybe just more clever writing could disguise the (basic) lack of first name in-game. I always felt like Alistair and I were pretty intimate even without it.

Maybe if Hawke had gone out of her way to say things like "It's just Hawke to you." to strangers, and our companions had called her Hawke less, it would have felt a little more natural.
