Let me run down the list you made as I see the names:

Jamie - Either
Ryan - Boy
Casey - Boy
Cory - Boy
Dylan - Boy
Devin - Boy
Jaden - Boy
Ashton - Either
Avery - Boy
Blair - Either
Arin (Erin? Aaron?) - Either
Lane - Boy
Quinn - Boy
Reese - Boy
Shane - Boy
Skylar - Boy
Spencer - Boy
Sydney - Girl
Alex - Boy
Sam - Boy
Jesse - Boy
Adrian - Boy
Blake - Boy
Hayden - Boy
Drew - Boy

As you see, most of these names to me are male. I would not like a male name for my female character. So a big fat no to your suggestion. Just because a handful of people have taken a name from another gender, or shortened their name, does not make it unisex.

First names reserved for the players to choose please!

My fault for not noticing your post earlier

Haha, for a man who wears pants with the buttcheeks cut out, Ashley is pretty badass. :D One man army indeed.

Lol i'm just messing with ya, but(lol) he would make Prince proud.

Seriously it's crazy how he could fist fight golems, dragons, elemental spirits, and armored knights.

And Vagrant Story's weapon customization is the kind of thing I'd love to see in the DA games - though perhaps with a bit more transparency about why certain combinations give you certain results.  Figuring the system out could take a loooong time in VS.

True, even if you know all of the combinations to forge all of the weapons/armor, the drop rates of the items are ridiculously low. it almost took me a month to make a damascus Brandestoc. Vagrant Story seriously needs a remake or sequel, but i'm fearful of Motomu Toriyama being anywhere near it's development.

I find the idea of unisex last names interesting, and I'm not really sure I understand it.  In some cultures/languages, a surname changes depending on the sex of the person who has it - Bjornson vs Bjornsdottir, for example - but most surnames in English don't, to my knowledge.  I mean, I'm a woman, and my surname literally includes the word 'man', and no one thinks that's odd.  It's my family name, not my personal name, it's not expected to conform to my sex.

Basically unisex names challenges your perceptions of standard naming conventions. I have a male friend who's named Courtney, and the stories about people misidentifying him are hilarious.

For fun, here's a list of unisex names that I don't think suck completely (although granted, some may be difficult to imagine working in the world of DA).

Riley
Cameron
Jordan
Taylor
Jamie
Ryan
Casey
Cory
Dylan
Devin
Jaden
Ashton
Avery
Blair
Arin
Lane
Quinn
Reese
Shane
Skylar
Spencer

Alex
Sam
Jesse
Adrian
Blake
Hayden
Drew

Civil, productive conversation, please.  Image IPB

Ooooooh cultural differences...

Anyway, I'm not opposed to a universal name but none of these particularly appeal to me just as I'm sure Lesley and Desley and Vivian don't appeal much to the fellas in the room.

In any case I never had a problem with "Warden", "Hawke" and "Shepard" so if the character is a Seeker I wouldn't have a problem with them just being "the Seeker" especially if they're a silent protagonist.

Avery and Blake are good names.

You can add Morgan to the list. It's the name of my canon Lady Hawke.

How about Jack?

But I actually like the idea. So long as the last name is left to us. That could be fun.

Some really good ideas in here, guys. And some really valid concerns.

First, I'd like to say thanks for reading and thinking about this.

Second, I'd really like for it to be generally known that I don't actually *like* the idea of allowing the game to choose a first name for me. But I like the idea of being called by my (also not chosen by me) last name even less. I've been wondering since DAII if this would be the lesser of two evils, since being called Hawke by my most intimate friends felt so awkward and inorganic to me (may feel more natural to male players, but I'd venture to guess that we females get called by our last names very little). "Champion" was fine -- when it's what I was called by folks who revered or didn't know my character well. Otherwise it would be like calling my dad "nurse" or calling my stepmom "computer programmer." Awk-waaard.

Also, as a lady whose real-life name is one of the gender-neutral beauties mentioned in this here thread, I should probably add that I don't think it's difficult to imagine my character being called one.

Again, thanks for all the input! Please understand that I am absolutely NOT, in general, in favor of taking away any more player control -- but using a developer-chosen last name in effectively the same way that our first name would have been used seems to be hardly a better option.

I prefer to pick my own first name, at the very least it makes ME feel more connection to my characters.

As for being called by last name. I do it a lot IRL(especially if they have a catchy one) and vice-versa(my first name is a nightmare for people while my last name rolls off the tongue nicely), so being called Hawke all the time felt normal or even friendly. There was more than 1 Hawke in that city, but when people said Hawke EVERYONE knew they were talking about you. That was pretty badass imo.

Follower #1: So why do we just call him "Inquisitor" all the time?

Follower #2: Because he's the Inquisitor.

Follower #1: He has to have a name right? Everybody's got a name.

Follower #2: I never bothered to ask.

Follower #1: Why not?

Follower #2 Well, he just asked if I wanted to join his party and I said yes. Never did give me his name.

Follower #1: You could just go and ask him.

Follower #2: After we've been travelling together for so long? That would be rude!

Interesting. Though not necessarily applicable to Thedas, though maybe. I have pretty strong opinions about baby names in real life (though there'd be no point in sharing them here) -- but I will point out that not only was that list pretty hard to actually put together, but I said that it was a list of names I didn't *completely hate* for a reason.  Image IPB

Would I give myself or one of my kids any of those names in real life? Probably not. But I'd choose any of them over "Hawke" "Inquisitor" "Miller" "Smith"... you get the idea.

Obviously Bioware would be the ones to make that kinds of big, final decision, and do it much better than I could. I'm just bringing things up for (hopefully) civil discussion.

I do the same thing.  But then you're posed the problem of all your protagonists having the same name and no one in the series noticing.  That's why I'd like them to make the last name optional in stead.

I actually really like this idea. Unfortunately, it's a lot of work to get all of those names recorded and then have each line sound natural with said name.

If they did too little names, fans would be upset. So it makes sense why they would stick with the universal surname.

Wow... I thought 75% of the list were male names. :P
Besides, even though some of us don't care about naming the character, A LOT will. Think of all the ridiculously outraged fans... I personally don't have a problem with it as long as the name isn't dumb. Perhaps a nickname? Or go back to the Origins method and be adressed by your title "Warden". Although, I don't really like "Inquisitor". I swear this is going to be Bioware's hardest part about making DA3...

No, because I wont like the name they choose.

I don't like unisex names, and I'd prefer to go by a title.

I'd actually like no surname and just go by a title, or a pronoun.

Bad idea. The child is going to hate his/her parents forever.
