I liked how Mass Effect handled Shepard's origin in two levels: You selected how Shep was brought up and what Shep had experienced in the military. DA3 could do with a system like that. Playable or no.

Well, I wanted an Amell background, but I understand that's not happening.

I suppose it depends on what sort of story Inquisition will have, and maybe even on what class the player chooses. In Origins, there wasn't a "circle mage" and "apostate mage" origin; there was just mage. And as all I know right now is that I'll be making (another!) mage, I'll just have to see.

Though, to be fair, the backgrounds might not be restricted to class like the origins were.

Some ideas in this thread are pretty nifty, and I wouldn't mind trying them out: Tevinter Magister, Circle Mage, Half-Elf . . . all of those sound fun.

Eh, I have eight import games, so unless there are drastically more backgrounds than I'm expecting, I'll try everything at least once.

Gawddamned people, please stop suggesting ME game features into DA. Next thing you know we have ghostly OGB giving three coloured choices to the PC.

I want a background like Daveth's character in Origins. A cocky rogue who was pressganged into service.

Well I want it again, and I want it to be me.

I'd like every class to have at least 2 origins. I will gladly play all mage-related origins, and rogue-related origins. I'll have to wait and see what they come up with for warriors. Of course, they could not have classes be tied to origins, so who knows.

It would be fun for each background tailored to the specialization you will have, since hopefully they will continue with the idea of a better specialization but only one.
A Tevinter Blood Mage
Apostate Chasind spirit healer
An Antivan assassin
Orlesian Bard
Circle Templar
Navarran Reaver

Stuff like that

Definitely a couple of Mage Origins, toward one side or the other of the conflict. One being the more rebellious/rogue Mage origin and the other being the more obedient Mage origin that agreed with the Mage's lot in life under the Templars and Chantry.

Had loads of ideas when it was mentioned, but hope they do something like in Arcanum or NWN2 and use the backgrounds to give bonuses based on past life experience.

Lets see if I can remember all the ones I came up with and the bonuses I thought of for them
Ex tervinter slave- allows for rabid anti mage roleplaying bonuses to physical resistances
Ex merchant- 5% discount from shops
Sgt Calhoun's - most tragic backstory
Raised by...
Elves- bonuses to nature resistance +1 constitution
Dwarves- bonuses to fire resistance +1 Strength
Mabari - mabari 'brother' as extra party member

Plus all the apostates and circle mage backgrounds as previously stated

I want to be able to play somebody with strong ties to the Chantry. Say, a lay sister or something. Would be pretty neat to be part of the religion and then set off to inquire or whatever it is we're going to do.

Yes! I really am interested in the Chantry and being part of it, but religions always fascinated me

Hhhmmm... I think I would like a hunted apostate origin, maybe being hunted down by Templars for trying to rescue someone they had captured... And for being a bloodmage... Something like that? But I wouldn't mind an ex-Cirlce origin either. Ooooo maybe an Tevinter mage-spy... Thingy...
For non-mages, I'm conflicted about. A rich merchant family would be cool, but so would a beggar origin... Maybe a refugee from Kirkwall or escaped slave/criminal from somewhere.
Now I'm just shooting in the dark -_-.

Ferelden or Kirkwall refugee if I go a commoner path. Would love to play both the outlander and the working class hero that gets to stick it to the Orlesian Nobles.

Orlesian noble if I go... well, the noble path. I really liked the Human Noble in DA:Origins, but I never felt that we had a chanse to expand on that since we were more or less Grey Wardens and nothing else mattered from the get go.

I hope there's at least three origins per class. That's all I've got to say on the matter.
For my character personally, I like to be the scoundrel so a theif/smuggler origin would be ideal for me.

Viddathari/Ben-Hassrath. Although I guess the second one would be somewhat more fitting for Seeker-candidacy. Either as a way of infiltrating them or as a sort of 'forced' conscription.

Tevinter Slaver. To throw the hypocrisy of pointing fingers at the Imperium, yet providing slaves at the same time in a White Chanter's face.

A Circle Mage that is present when there is a rebellion. You have the option to oppose or support the rebellion but it happens regardless.

Mysterious stranger. That would give us the freedom to create any backstory we liked.
