What is the Red Wedding, exactly?

If you have any intention of ever reading the A Song of Ice and Fire books or watching Game of Thrones, DO NOT INQUIRE ABOUT THE RED WEDDING.

Seriously, its a super massive spoiler event. It would be awful if somebody spoiled it here for anyone.

As to the OP, I wouldn't mind having more consequences to player driven actions. Consequences that make sense within the world and might b delayed in nature. As far as switching perspectives, I would be ok with that as well. Not every five minutes necessarily, but in a Starcraft 1 style where you have maybe 2 or 3 points of view on a common story.

I have no intention of ever reading or watching either series; my instinct is telling me that I'd hate them with a passion.

The very fact that you're posting on a DA forum tells me your instict are probably wrong. Atleast do yourself a favorwatch one episode or read one of the books.

I have nothing against ******, but I'd rather not see them in contact with men.

The ****** aren't really the focus of the books/tv series, they're just there when it's appropriate. And if I understand you correctly that you're more into F/F, than rest assured there are several of those to, and you can expect it to be more prominent in later seasons.

But seriously it's not porn. This is the best thing that happened to fantasy setting lovers since the LOTR movies. Watch the first episode; if you can make it through without wanting to watch the next episode I'll trouble you no more. Image IPB

And by that you mean storytelling whereby the bad guys are more likeable and waaay more awesome than the good guys?

To each their own.

I have to ask though, that seems like a really... limiting stance to take. Don't you ever get curious as to what things your missing out on because you choose to avoid anything that portraits men and women in coitus?

For example.

The TV show Spartacus on the Starz network, is one of my favorite TV shows of all time. It portraits sexual relationships of all shapes and sizes. To the point of gratuity sometimes.

As a heterosexual male, I honestly have no desire to watch two men engaging in a homosexual relationship. I don't have anything against them, I think everyone should be free to live whatever lifestyle they choose.

I just don't want to watch the graphic bits. I don't, however, let that affect my enjoyment of what is a truly great show.

If I had never given it a chance, I would be missing out on one of my favorite shows ever.

I was sort of kidding. While it's true, the main reason I don't watch the show is because A. I don't really watch TV at all, and B. The series seems extraordinarily depressing and painful to follow. The latter reason is also why I don't read the books.

You know writing good plot twist and interesting reveals is not something exclusive to ASOIAF right? Nor is it really a distinct style only found in that series of novels.

Having curveballs thrown to the player from time to time would be good. Having the entire plot be a series of curveballs which amount to never getting a break in the world and always getting knocked down?

Much less desirable or fun, if you always have to get a beating every 15 minutes, just to show you what a beating feels like.

You should read the book ,Xilizhra , it's a bit depressing at time ...but I don't know why I think you might enjoy a character like Arya.

At least a couple of good choices for squad leader are very obvious if you simply read the text they give you on the choice screen. The problems come when thinking too much - you can easily concoct a pretty solid chain of logic for plenty of people who don't work.

And...
we're off topic again. Yes, I got screwed because I overthought something in ME2; it would have been nice if they had designed the game choices to be consistent with what we know from elsewhere in the game.

To bring this back on track, it would be nice to see game design that rewards players with positive outcomes in difficult predicaments who are able to synthesize the information presented to them earlier in the game, instead of having it spoon-fed-- especially in a manner which is misleading or contradicts previously established info.

Whether this should actually cause significant plot divergence-- like preventing/causing the death of a companion character-- or merely give you extra money/loot/etc is an interesting thing to ponder.

Can't really argue with that.

They are phenominal books but for sure, they can be hard to follow and yes they are depressing and painful; but the pain is damn goooooooooood.

Seriously. The Red Wedding left me shaken to my very core the first time I read it. I literally had to go smoke a cigarette and gather my thoughts afterwards.

Tears may or may not have been involved. Don't judge me!

I like the idea behind the Ice and Fire setting but it's needlessly complex. I can't read the books without having the wiki open to remember what each and every minor character is up to because GRRM loves to reference **** like that. It shows dedication, yes, but it's not a fun read: and I want a fun game.

I agree with you 100%. I would love a game that required the player to actually pay attention to what is happening. A game that used subtlety in the dialogue and had real consequences when the player failed to grasp something important.

However this is not in Bioware's wheel house to do.

They market games to as wide an audience as possible and wide audiences don't mesh well with the above mentioned things.

It sucks, but it also kinda makes this topic irrelevant.

Dragon Age should just stick to Dragon Age. I don't think Bioware could pull it off to be honest. The story with GoT is just way too dark and mature for a Bioware title. I don't think alot of people here would like it anyway, what with the painful plots, and the loss of characters would spark too much of an outrage here.

I wouldn't want it, to be honest. A story where the heroes constantly go from bad to worse? (And yes, I read the books, they are much better than the series, but it no way less depressing.)
Like many have said already, DA should remain DA.

I did!
Have to say though that I read the first two. Want to get and start to read the third one soon though ^_^.

Think that, although the show does not follow the books at the letter from season two on, that it is beautifully made. Great environments and lots of attention to details in regards to weapons and armor.

The storytelling is done from the involved person point of view in the books but done that way that the overall story still makes sense. The depth of the characters grows immensly because of that way of storytelling. This is not so much in the show imho but that is also impossible to do imho.

As far as storytelling like that for a game....A combination between the show and the books would be amazing as the game gives the possibility to add things to the lore, as in a character description. Am a big fan of the books and the show so would not say no to seeing something simular appear in DA3.

Always darkest before the dawn, and blah blah blah. But realy, aren't tired of reading books and seeing movies/tv series where the heroes are invincible marry sues that ALWAYS easily beat the bad guys? Isn't a series that advocate the "lawful stupid isn't a survival trait" approach more interesting. In ASOIAF and GoT, it teaches you the valuable lesson that the world is a cold and harsh place, and you can be good, you can be bad, but don't ever be stupid...

You forgot Theon`s and Hodor`s penis too. And Loras and Renly having gay sex.

Loras and Renly is only on the tv series.

I've been reading back through the series, in preparation for season 3 at the end of this month, and I'd definitely say that Loras and Renly were . . . definitely implied. Not sure if that was the author's intention, but some things I read I couldn't believe I'd missed my first time through.

Martin has said it flat out several times. Loras and Renly are gay, and they are in a relationship.

"A Song of Ice and Fire style storytelling" - by this I suppose you mean that we should have at least five years between each installment?

I'm not so interested with body counts that high. Especially since, even though you mentioned more f/f things happening later on, I have a weird complex about detesting tragic lesbian romance.

Right, because my Warden was a celibate male who could never do anything away from one geographic spot... wait.

The reason that won't fly is because most people consider video games simply entertainment, not--

Dare I say it? Dare I??!

The plot doesn't need to be dark for one to learn. Shakespeare often used entertainment as a form of educating his audience. No one likes to be told 2+2=4, but hide it under humour or use a character whose expertise is math and you'll be absorbing knowledge without noticing.

I bet Mass Effect will turn a lot of younger kids towards a passion for science or even literature. The same goes for Dragon Age and the Witcher.

That being said, I think it's time for Dragon Age to feel darker. Not that the world isn't dark (and it's true. Either we have become desensitized or torture and rape isn't edgy enough any more.) Adding these elements, however, isn't going to make Dragon Age more 'mature' or 'gritty.' It's just going to make it look desperate.

Mature story telling is what it needs. For the most part, Dragon Age is mature, but lacks that avaricious feel there is to A Song of Ice and Fire. Everyone is out for themselves, and no one is working together under perfect negotiations. Hell, we have allies ALREADY trying to take over Kings Landing because they see that the throne is there to take.

Personally it's hard for me to pin-point where exactly Dragon Age goes wrong. Overall it is a very dark world, and those who say otherwise need to sort out their morality. As I've said, rape, torture etc... that's not what I'd call a fable-esque fantasy. I think David Gaider and company have done an awesome job, but there is *still* something I can't quite conjure up at the moment, which is missing.

I'll leave it for someone more intelligent than I to spot it.

How can I make this MORE clear......

*ALL* that will happen is that players will reload the first time to pick the 'right' choice, and I will have to constantly alt-tab to the wiki to make sure I'm picking it from then on.

ie.  just more nuisance.  Completely pointless.

Dragon Age is a bright fantasy with 'dark elements', Bioware have said that themselves.  It is not Witcher-esque 'OMG RAPE TORTURE IS SOOOO MATURE' stuff designed for teenagers.

If there is a right choice.

The metagaming is player choice, I agree with Sylvius that it is not the job of the developers to save players from themselves. (at least I think it was Sylvius the Mad who has said that multiple times before, but I could be wrong.)

People do like drama, and I remember people purposefully having people die in the suicide mission in ME2 not because they hated the characters but for drama and a more compelling story. Player choice still.
