How is experience dished out in this game? Is it based on total kills in a mission or just mission completion? It's kind of unclear, and I'm doing another playthrough after several years and I'm wondering if I should bother killing anything or just run past whatever I can.

I'm specifically talking about ME2, just in case that was unclear to anyone.

mission completion

running past wont always help as most exits youll need to bypass a door or are locked till enemies are defeated

So kills aren't factored in at all?
