Actually I completely disagree. Meer as Paragon sounds creepy, and Hale as Renegade sound incredibly forced and fake.

Hale for Paragon, Meer for Renegade!

What a boring world if we all thought the same thing eh? :) All I know is when I played a Renegade Male I thought "Shep's a dick". When I played a female Renegade I thought "Wow, Sheps a bad ass"

Thats as far as my analysis goes I'm afraid :)

Both are very talented, but I thought Meer did a slightly better job with voicing Shepard overall. And that is no small feat, considering that Hale is one of the better voice actors in the business.

Also since we are discussing voice actors I have to point out some of the other work Meer did in the series. He's actually hilarious in some of the smaller comedic roles he played in the series.

For example..

Mark Meer as the 'I Own You' Volus

"I need minimal heat increase...and speed. I have extremely high performance requirements."

Image IPB

His delivery of that Volus' lines kills me, especially after you listen to the whole thing and figure out that the Volus was looking for a suit that would allow him to get it on with an Asari.

Meer also voiced Vorcha, and Niftu Cal, the biotic god.

Meer as Niftu Cal

Hale. Meer sounded too stale for my liking. Since I always end up being renegade, Hale's (a little bit) raspy voice and emotions made it perfect. The only VA that could have done almost as good job imo would be Laura Bailey. Even though her voice sounds a bit younger and, well, "sexy" in comparison.

Meer, only because I've never done a Femshep playthrough.

Mark meer is wayy better than hale. A perfect example is the confrontation with TIM in the ending.
Meer does have some lines that couldve been better, but over all, hale just usually sounds bored, or her lines sound weird the way she voices them. or theyre sound forced

Meer as a voice actor is more than just Shepard though. For example I really appreciate his Vorcha voice acting.

I think what you say is just incredibly mean. Have you heard Troy Baker in any non-Japanese (anime) roles?

Wasn't Troy Baker also Snow in FFXIII? Hmm, I could see that working.

Snow? Point in case.

You also completely ignored my comment about Catherine, which is most definitely not an anime and contains scenes that maturely discuss some of the most basic elements of day to day life - relationships, parental commitments, and personal aspirations.

And he was useless. If an actor can't convincingly discuss day-to-day mundane, he most definitely can't carry the obscure and abstract. And Mass Effect 3 is proof in point - he's as much the reason Kai Leng comes across cheesy and predictable as the script is. The guy can't act - there's nothing mean in stating that when it's the truth.

Err.. he was Two-Face in Arkham City, the guy can act. It's all about direction and script in the end. If an actor isn't given sufficient direction in how to do a performance then he can only do his own take on something.

Meer voices my Shepard. I respect Hale (she did voices for Pinky and The Brain), but I can only tolerate playing femShep for a few minutes (usually to test a mod).

Hale all the way, her inflections made all the difference. Meer was way too monotone to me as Shepard. Some characters do work with a monotone voice, but to me Shepard has to show more emotion. For my extreme bastard renegade playthrough it did actually fit, but for the rest I went with Hale every time.

Yea, this is kinda how I feel. I honestly really like both. I think they both have totally different approaches to the lines and I enjoy those differences. But I find myself prefering Hale as paragon and Meer as Renegade.

I will also say I think Hales acting was consistent all through the series. She was great in all three. I think Meers acting got better and better with each installment, It was kinda flat in ME1 and was amazing by ME3. And I don't think it is his fault, because the guy can act and do great VO work. There was an interview with Hale and Meer and other VAs from the series around the time ME2 was released, and Hale and Meer both said they were given very different directions on how to portray the characters. Meer said he was told to be as monotone and steady as possible between the three options (para, ren and neutral), so the transition was smooth between them. Hale said she was told to to be very different for each style and given very different directions for each style, so they were easy to distiguish from each other.

I think they let Meer loose in ME3 and let him emote way more, showing is true VO talent off as ManShep, and it really showed, he was fantastic.

I also really dislike these threads because a lot of people just take the chance to bash on others for their opinion, or make out right fun of either actor for no real reason when everything really is up to personal taste. :pinched:

This again??? I hope eveyone's keeping it civil Image IPB.

I agree that Meer has gotten better with each game. For me though, it's Hale all the way - I'm a femshep player.

I think it's kinda cute going back to ME1 and listening to how 'green' everyone looks and sounds.

Both VAs are awesome though and have come a long way. Image IPB

Hope I don't get any flak for this, but I think Hale got worse while Meer got better. Either that, or Meer's improvements made Hale seem worse by comparison. I'll admit male Shep sounded a bit bland in ME1, but in ME2 & ME3 he held a lot more emotion in his lines.

I liked Meer in ME2 and ME3 but he was too bland in ME1. Meer got better, but Hale was consistently good so I prefer Hale.

It's also a piece of sh*t game that I fail to take seriously.

And he was useless. If an actor can't convincingly discuss day-to-day mundane, he most definitely can't carry the obscure and abstract.

Except Troy Baker is very good at convincingly discussing day-to-day mundane topics. Case in point: Kanji Tatsumi from the Persona series.

If you have played Persona 4, you know how excellent Troy Baker is as the day-to-day stuff. You just so happen to use a piece of sh*t game as an example, and expect me to take that ****** poor example seriously.

And Mass Effect 3 is proof in point - he's as much the reason Kai Leng comes across cheesy and predictable as the script is. The guy can't act - there's nothing mean in stating that when it's the truth.

Nonsense. The reason why Kai Leng comes across as cheesy and predictable is because he's written cheesy and predictable, and his lines are cheesy and predictable.

Kai Leng was already the laughing stock for those who spoiled themselves with the leaked script (myself included). Kai Leng didn't even have a voice back then.

Not to mention Kai Leng's role in Mass Effect Deception. Everyone who read that book was already aware how stupid Kai Leng is, and at this point, Kai Leng still didn't have a voice.

If anything, Troy Baker made Kai Leng less ridiculous with his excellent voice-acting.

Edit: Also, as someone else pointed out, Troy Baker did Two-Face in Batman Arkham City. One of his many excellent perfomances. So honestly, don't tell me Troy Baker can't act, because that's just a load of horse crap, and you know it.

I like them both. Problem is I've played so much as a female Shepard, and so gotten used to hearing Jennifer Hale voice the character, that when I play as male Shepard Mark Meer's voice work just sounds 'wrong'.

Weird I know.

meh. I can and will. He can't act. You have a funny idea of what passes for 'excellent' voice acting. He was crap in Persona compared to the source, too. About the only thing he's not sucked ass in was Binary Domain, and surprise surprise, he was playing a dumb yank grunt in that. He did it well tho, and was particularly convincing in the scenes with Bo and Faye. But then the dumb grunt is his safety zone, and he kinda cheated his way into working well as half the romance pairing, given the other VA was once again his irl fiancé at the time.

But that's the other major problem with Baker - you can't get him without getting her. And the same three voices (Travis Willingham the third guilty party) endlessly appearing together destroys any suspension of disbelief you might have had as soon as you hear them. The same three in the same three archetypical roles, with the same inflictions, the same bland spin on the characters... They're the worst thing to happen to mainstream western voice acting in ten years.

As for Catherine, go play it in it's native language, minus the appalling English VAs. You'll find it infinitely more enjoyable, and even with the slightest degree of Japanese cultural exposure, infinitely more relevant.

Mark Meer may sound disinterested a lot of the time, but he's leagues better than Baker will ever be.

I just do not like Jennifer Hale's Shepard voice.

I loved her as Bastila, but I just can't see her as fitting it.

Meer is awesome.

Mark Meer, for sure.

Hale's voice is the only reason I cannot fully play as a female Shepard.

Female Shepard sounds like she's groaning all the time, unfortunately. I'll take Meer's occasional monotone over that.
