Now that's a big hyperbole if I ever saw one.

If you seriously think Troy Baker sucked in Batman Arkham City, than we haven't much more to discuss about. I find it hard to take you or your opinion seriously.

Regardless of your opinion, Troy Baker can certainly act. That's a fact.

As for Catherine, go play it in it's native language, minus the appalling English VAs. You'll find it infinitely more enjoyable, and even with the slightest degree of Japanese cultural exposure, infinitely more relevant.

I played it in Japanese (I always play all games in their original language). it still terribly sucked.

Mark Meer may sound disinterested a lot of the time, but he's leagues better than Baker will ever be.

So I guess that's why Troy Baker has a ton more roles in a lot more triple-A video-game titles than Mark Meer ever will? Ah. Okay.

Don't get me wrong though. I love Mark Meer. But Mark Meer doesn't really shine as Commander Shepard. The Vorcha and the Volus dialogue, THAT'S where Mark Meer's talent is really noticable. Shepard's dialogue? Not so much.

Troy Baker would have made a better commander Shepard. He has also more experience voicing soldier characters. Just check his track record with Call of Duty, Brother in Arms and Army of Two. This guy certainly knows how to act like a soldier.

Broshep : Mark Meer
Femshep : Jenifer Hale
The other way around would sound weird and I don't like to get stuck on one gender either so.....

Wait, what? You're referencing CoD as an example of good voice acting? Of portraying military servicemen in an believable and compelling manner?

Yeah, we're done here.

Meer all the way. I can appreciate Hale is a good voice actor but I just prefer Male Shepard, Paragon and Renegade.

CoD has got 99 problems, but voice acting ain't one of them.

Both are really good VA's, but my preference is for Jennifer Hale.

Both did good, but personally I prefer Meer. Maybe it's just me but I always thought Jennifer Hale was delivering her lines like she had just gotten out of bed.

Yes, more so than Mass Effect, that's for bloody sure.

BioWare didn't have a goddamn clue about the military when they made Mass Effect, that's one thing that was obvious from day one.

And CoD isn't the only example I listed. How convenient of you to totally ignore Brother in Arms, which is one of the best, most tactical and most realistic WW2 shooters I've played so far.

Kiefer Sutherland as Roebuck in World at War
Gary Oldman as Reznov in World at War and Black Ops
James C. Burns as Frank Woods in Black Ops
Steve Blum as Captain Foley in Call of Duty
Craig Fairbrass as Gaz in Modern Warfare, Ghost in Modern Warfare 2, or Sgt. Wallcroft in MW3

Most of the stories may be horrible (MW2 and 3), and the others over the top and Michael Bayish (Black Ops and II), but they have great voice actors that have me enjoying the experience. World at War was especially good at having the war seem like absolute hell (except for Black Cats, that was actually a pretty hopeful level, to me at least), Roebuck and Reznov's VA's having a lot to do with that.

Haven't played Brothers in Arms or Army of Two yet though. Both look good.

Meer makes a great Renegade, but his Shepard voice is also very boring (if only he spoke like he does in real life).

This is something that always confused the hell out of me.  Mark Meer is a fantastic actor. Watch any of his comedy work or listen to any of the other VA roles he has done.  The guy knows how to act and put a lot of emotion into it as well.  I never understood why his Shepard sounded to dry to me (though I agree he gets better as the series progresses).  My only guess is that he was maybe told to sound as neutral as possible during the recording sessions, but then why wasn't Jen Hale given the same direction.

In any event, I think both are great and would love to hear them in more games.

Reminds me of something Kevin Conroy said about Batman. He was talking about having people around who told him when to tone back while doing the Animated Series (he also goes on to talk about the idea that maybe no one told Christian Bale to hold back while doing his voice).
So, maybe Meer was told to tone back way too much. but yeah, still doesn't explain why Hale gets so much emotion.

Brothers in Arms is extremely good. It really has this Band of Brothers vipe going on and it's pretty realistic, both in terms of story (based on true events) and in terms of combat (based on true military tactics). The voice-acting in that game is also extremely good and Troy Baker really shines as the lead character Sergeant Matthew Baker.

Can't say much about Army of Two. Haven't really spend much time in that game.

Back on topic:

I used to prefer Mark Meer over Jennifer Hale, but since ME3 I think they're pretty much on par. As I said earlier, I think broShep (Mark Meer) is the best choice for a Renegade playthrough, while femShep (Jennifer Hale) is the best choice for a Paragon playthrough.

That said, I think Hale did manage to nail the evil cloneShep. She sounded pretty convincing. Mark Meer was less convincing as evil cloneShep, though he still did an okay job.

You don't have to mindlessly hate Call of Duty whenever someone brings it up. The Call of Duty series has always had great voice acting.

They're both great in different ways. Personally prefer playing femshep so Hale inches ahead in my book. Mark's 1980s action hero Renegade is hilarious to play, though.

Yeah, that's the thing that makes Meer better for me over Hale.  He's voices a much better badass.

I'm with the "paragon-hale and renegade-meer" crowd...Meer as paragon, even in ME3 never sounded like he believed in what he was saying....

For me, compare the paragon speech to the quarians when you're brokering peace...Hale, I fully believe her as Shepard when she says those lines...Meer, I'm going "yeah, right"...

Same thing for the reverse...femshep's lines aren't said bad, but compared to Meer? No contest...

However, as a poster linked to in the 1st page, Meer absolutely nailed the last speech from Cmdr. Shepard.

The combination of the animation of the face plus the way he uttered the words and the "hmph" just before saying the last two words "The Best".

Yeah, he was better there IMO.
