I don't want any old companions, or even important NPCs, returning as companions for DA3. Not Leliana, not Varric, not Aveline, not Morrigan. No one.

It will inevitably lead to comparisons between the "old" and "new" versions. No good will come of that.

Exibit A: Anders

Minor characters from past games are a maybe. Characters like Charade, Cassandra, or maaaaybe Cullen. They didn't have huge roles in past games, and thus have less chance to be "ruined" in some players' eyes. but even then I'd prefer a blank slate, brand new characters for a brand new game.

Obviously Cassandra who questioned Varric will be a party member. Some characters like Leliana and Allister will be npcs.

Well, apart from Cassandra obviously making an appearance at some point, since she's just a framing device, and we learn absolutely nothing about her, except she is a seeker looking for Hawke.
I would rather have absolutely nobody turn up just for the purpose of a cameo in the game. Relevant, and meaningful story reasons are obviously another matter (If there was a meeting of heads of states, i'd obviously Alistair/anora to show up, for example).

Leliana, Morigan, and Isabella. The first two can play a large role, Isabella just needs to be a quick cameo so she can be in all three.

I'd like more Shale.

Beyond her, I don't really need to see any of the others, although it would be nice. I don't really want any of them to be companions again, however, unless their character is going to develop in new and unexpected directions.

Either Sigrun or dwarf Shale. Otherwise, nobody. They were all great companions, but it's time for new ones.

Absolutely none. No cameos means more room for a fresh cast and character development. It also means no chance of a well liked character getting re-written and ruined the way Anders was. I would much rather have an original, coherent story with good and consistent characterization than fanservice out of the blue and attempts at comic book-style continuity.

Origins: dog. Would have said ohgren but he was already brought back once in awakening.

2: Sebastian. Not because he was my favourite, but because it would make sense if he, a prince, was involved in the world politics if there is a big war happening.

Legends: is it sad that I want more characters from this in DAI than the other games? I feel like lukesh or the hero or Ravi should be there seeing as they quelled some mighty threats and traveled around thedas.

I would like to see Wade & Herren, Knight Captain's Cullen and Hadley as well as Leliana & Cassandra.

DA2--Cassandra. Meredith(yes I know she is dead) If they can bring back Leliana why not Meredith?

Mainly Nathaniel, I hope he returns as an important figure within the Grey Wardens.

More Anders would be good, especially if you let him live in DA2.

I don't see Alistair being a big part of the game but another appearance by him would be welcome.

I wouldn't want to see any previous companions return as DA:I companions, but I'd be cool with a Varric cameo. Romances need to stay away, though. If I see Alistair running about without my warden, or Anders without Hawke, I will be displeased. D:
