How do I get my four characters to move separately? I move one to a separate location and the other three follow, when I want them to stop / hold where they are at.

You can make them move seperately if you (for the Xbox 360) press the left trigger and go to advanced functions on the wheel. In the right hand area of the circle that opens up press "Hold position" or whatever it says. It looks like a hand being held up.

Press H on keyboard or click the little hand icon below your 4th party member's portrait. 
That toggles hold position on and off.
