I've rarely encountered any douchebags when playing ME3, at least for the PC. Come to think of it, I must've lucked out and managed to avoid all the jerks while playing games like BF3, Crysis 2, Dark Souls, and FFXI. There's plenty of cheaters about though.

Playing competitive multiplayer games for the Xbox 360 on the other hand...

Can you site some of the games for example, usually for me, those competitve multiplayer games are usually either Halo, COD or Gears of War.  I kind of feel like those games online community are more or less given the 360's community a bad rep.

Yeah, I'm gonna sidestep around the debate going on in here and just share my experience as a female gamer.

Maybe I am ridiculously lucky or something, but I have literally had not one bad experience or any harrassment on PS3. None. At all. Now, yes, my screen name is gender-neutral. But I use a mic all the time. I talk a lot. If I have a friend in the room, I have no problem mentioning my husband and saying other things that obviously peg me as actually being a female gamer and not just some really young kid or something.

Granted, I have only ever played two games online... the first was an arcade racing game called Motorstorm and the other is, obviously, ME3 MP.

So far, no bad experiences. Nobody has ever said they wanted to rape me, nobody has asked me for my number or done any "hey baby"'s at me, nobody has ever told me to go make them a sandwich or to get back in the kitchen. Nothing. In fact, the only time my gender has actually been acknowledged was a few people thinking it was cool I was a female gamer and wishing more women would game.

I have thus far been treated simply as one of the guys, which is what I want. I don't want to be special or for dudes to act all chivalrous and "let me win" or anything like that. Any "inappropriate" banter has all been jokes... more often than not made in response to me initiating inappropriate banter, as a way to break the ice and show that it's okay to act like guys around me... "You really can call that Banshee a negative female slur, it doesn't bother me. Here, I will call her that first so that nobody has to feel muzzled or weird because OMG there's a chick in here."

Just my experience. Your mileage may vary.

I would not be surprised if somebody did that.

How did this go from some interweb bullying thingy to a case study on how some people get on with females? Just as many (if not more) males get idiotic messages/verbal during mp games. I know i have had rather a lot yrs ago in cod/bf/halo usually because you handed someone their ass in a match. Laughing at them, block them, then move on to the next game and dont get hung up on what some halfwit is spewing, why is that so hard?

Mass Effect in general actually has a really good community, even if the PC players don't talk a whole lot.

On World of Warcraft on the other hand, I have been hit on because somebody thought I was a girl.

They didn't wait for any sort of confirmation(which I'd not have given seeing as how I'm a guy). The only information they had was that my character was a female healer.

Of course, my girlfriend found that incredibly amusing.

Honestly, that would be rather funny to me. I would probably respond in an exaggerated Southern Belle accent and counter-offer that I will fetch them some of those yummy grenades if they'd be so kind as to let me partake in a few of "their" kills first.

I relate most of my online experiences to WoW, as there's very little community interaction in ME3 (playing with each other isn't necessarily interaction in the same way, unless they talk or message you afterward).

It's impossible to bully me. IRL or virtually.

Simply because of what I've been through IRL.

Just as long as you aren't counting trade chat =P

It's always great to wind up in a group of people from an RP server though.

Can throw you off a bit when the rest of your group is in character, but I find the RPers to typically be much nicer people than those from the other servers.

What I find interesting is that I have 2 female draenei characters, and on my healer I get mistaken for a girl a lot more than on my tank.

I'm actually extremely entertained whenever ppl start talking trash at me despite having lost my mic years ago and never bothering to replace it.

Interesting video, but I think the level of abuse displayed in the video is not exactly the norm, whereas general trash talk is far more common, particularly in competitive games. But, I think there is a lot of grey area between trash talk and abuse, and individual reactions are subjective.

Having played various competitive online games for ~13 years now, I can absolutely attest that anonymity + audience = A-hole. Although the one girl in the video said she did not want to grow a thick skin, I absolutely feel its necessary to do so. Regardless of gender, when embarking onto the internet, its wise to grow a think skin. The internet shatters physical boundaries and brings masses of people together, the good, the bad, and the ugly side of humanity all tossed together.

I'm on the same boat. The only thing that makes me miss my mic is talking with friends during games. But when it's about people trash talking at me I'm glad I can't reply, instead of getting stressed I get entertained :)

Because the abuse is often catered to a stereotype or generalization. These "shortcuts" are easier to latch onto during an emotional rage/rant (than to really think about it), labels are the easiest things to think of first. As a white male, I'm not even sure what that shortcut would be against me...other than a fat/loser/nerd, a homophobic, or an emasculating comment I suppose.

Most of the insults I have recieved have been related to me "having no life" due to my frequent completion of games & hours of playtime. Usually gamerscore is a frequent target for me.

But having someone attack something that's not true, isn't directly about me, and not directly threatening me is very different than someone attacking who I am. I mean a constant barrage of attacks on your value as a person will effect you at some point.

And to say that words have no weight is silly. What of diplomacy, speeches, propaganda, and the effects and emotions that run rampant on even forums. Just because someone can go through a war and come back fine, doesn't mean that others won't come back with PTSD; everyone is different and has different experiences. Good for you if you have that personal power to deflect words, not everyone can do that. Their pain is still real and valid.

I'm sorry for all of you who do not understand empathy (not sympathy). Dehumanization is the worst atrocity in history.

Thats different because those "scenarios" actually play an important part in history.

I can understand empathy for others but I also believe that people should stick up for themselves.  Not everyone knows or wants to know what you've experience, people who are jerks will say ANYTHING to get a rise out of you, to belittle you for their own entertainment.  Their words have no weight to them.

For some it can hurt, but there are ways that you can ignore or rise above it.  People are going to be jerks in real life and on the internet.  Its up to you (not you COLZ7R),  to make that distinction that "oh hey, this persons being a jerk" and just move on or mute them or block communications, whatever, don't let a random person mess up whatever game your playing.

Sticks and stones can break my bones but words will never hurt me.

So because of technology bullying is now a problem?  Its not like Bullying happened in the past and it wasn't as big of a deal now.  Note to be negative but did we go from learning to stand up for selves towards looking for help becuase of technology?

Some people need to grow a spine.

Pseudo anonymity tends to give people the impression that they can say/do whatever they want... but ultimately who cares what some random jackass on XBL/PSN/Origin says? I pretty much forget all about them 5 minutes after logging off.

That's great and I agree that growing a bit more desensitised to it would help. But there is a problem. People contribute a lot of time to these things, they care and take things seriously.

And importantly there have been cases where people kill themselves or kill those who pissed them off in the game. So how many more other people just feel rotten or angry? It's not just limited to computer games either. Online forums have the same cases of these things happening.
