As I said in my post, I hold no true fear that someone on the internet is going to track me down and carry out their threats on me. Regardless, it stirs the same instincts that I maintain in real life, which defeats the entire purpose of gaming and having fun.

ME3 has a wonderful community that is very mature, helpful, and nice. I can't say the same for really any other games, and for the most part the best thing I can say is that thank god most people don't communicate on PC anyway.

Hmm. I make my comments out of a position of ignorance.
I created this thread because of my own ignorance.

Thank you for providing a much needed victims perspective on this hurtful culture.

There is an old thread where one of the BSN members was badly bullied.
It was a thread about whether or not you look like your created Comander Shepard.

There was a woman with pigtails who was treated very poorly.
The thread was also a pool for this one person to make fun of homosexuals aswell.
I am not providing a hyperlink since that thread must not be revived.

I'm also told that my use of emoticons does not help me, since apparently it's not very "manly", or something like that.

The awesome thing about Xbox is you just stay in a party they can't hear you, you can't hear them.

Video games are pretty much an escape from RL, if you encounter the same **** in your life and you are abused in your fantasy world, why the hell wouldnt you be offended? Some say you can just ignore it which is true, but you cant forget.. Especially if it happens all the time.

My sister had the same problems...wasnt threats of violence tho..but she still had to change her GT.

Anita Sarkesian, biggest liar on the net or at least one of them. She milked 400k+ with crocodile tears...sad and pathetic. She was never attacked.

It's funny... I just came back from a training course at work about "dealing with disruptive and unruly patrons" (I work in a library). One of the things we touched on was the point that you shouldn't take a lot of things personally: someone complaining about fines and being bratty on the subject, for example, I would be able to shrug off, even if they tossed some colorful language my way. I'd equate that to, say, "being called a noob" for the Internet. Innocuous, even laughable.

Clearly abusive language, however, is not okay. A threat is a threat. I wouldn't want anyone to talk to me, nor anyone I considered human— let alone care about in any degree— in that way. The offender makes the move from being a mere jerk to one word/keystroke from a criminal when they refuse to recognize the humanness of the person they're addressing.

Banter and ragging is one thing, but to verbally dehumanize someone is unacceptable. That's my two cents, anyway... On an empty stomach, no less, so sorry if it doesn't make a lot of sense.

I got called a wh*re by multiple people because of my PSN name. They thought I was a female because of my PSN name. It's horrible how some people act towards female gamers. Gender shouldn't matter when gaming. The only thing that should matter: having fun!

EDIT: I'm a male (not that it matters).

And the people that called me a wh*re were online 'Friends' deleted them afterwards.

Couldn't say anything back because I didn't have a mic at the time.

If someone uses the name of his (now dead) cat as an online nickname, the person doesn't have to be a wh*re.

Personally, no, I've not been bullied on the Internet. My niece, on the other hand, had to put up with some pretty bad abuse when she played Counter Strike. Some dudes are biased idiots, particularly toward women. Even more so when they believe they're anonymous.

Victims need to find better ways of coping with the bullying or at the very least find ways of combating the bullying as opposed to provoking it.

We're already victim-blaming?  But we're only 2 pages in!

Not quite where I was going.

I was trying that bullies love to see their victims respond with angry comments.
So if the victims respond, the bullies will feel encouraged to continue.
If the bully is ignored they often stop.

If the bully continues despite being ignored, there are means of combating them.

XBOX Live has a mute function.
You can block the bully.
You can report them.

It is not the victims fault if they get bullied.
Let me repeat myself: It is not the victims fault if they get bullied.
But a victim can make things worse for themselves depending on how they react to the bullying.

This is no different to how you deal with bullies at school.
Same situation. Same methodology.

But that is where you're going.

If person A does something inappropriate (bullying, threatening, whatever), person B's reaction should not come under scrutiny and we shouldn't be looking to them to change how they react so as not to "provoke" or "make things worse for themselves" - that is absolutely victim blaming.  If someone says to me over Xbox Live "I'm going to rape you and kill you", I am well within my right to tell them to go **** themselves, to break down crying, to fight back, to mute them, to defend myself, to respond.

Girls especially are taught to "play nice", not to provoke argument, that when he hits you he likes you, that saying "no" is rude, to be people pleasers (even at the risk of one's own safety).  Pulling up a video on bullying (specifically) females online, and then going on to say what one should do and not do to provoke and make things worse for themselves - yes, it is victim blaming.

I can tell from your overall message that you think bullying is wrong, and that's great.  But the words you've chosen indicate a mindset that victims have more power over situations than is fair to assign.

Feh, people like to report me on X-Box for "trash talk" and "aggression". Neither of which I do. If I do talk I talk normally. And my "aggressiveness" is killing the enemy AI dead.

I think some people are just getting mad that I actually have some skill at the game and can out perform them.

But running into "bullies"?, no, I would find that funny to run into some more internet tough guys though. Like the dude who threatened to gut me like a pig with a knife if he ever saw me. Or this other guy who threatened to break every bone in my body. And such stuff like that. Big words from little boys.

I never really understood the Xbox rep system... I have over 50% in trash talk and about 23% in Overly Aggressive.

I make it my goal when gaming to never be the guy trashtalking/putting down/insulting anyone for any reason, even if they are doing that to me.

I just hate that this term "bullying" is thrown around. Call it what it is: harassment, threats, and verbal assault.

At least as other people stated, ME3 has got a more mature community. Because of that things like this will (almost) never happen in this game.

Go figure a co-operative game fosters co-operative behavior.

The only bullying I saw was when a host refused to start a game because a low level N7 vanguard was playing Silver. So I gladly ruined his lobby with anime micspam.

Trolling, not quite bullying.

Trolling is just being annoying in a funny manner.
Bullying is going out of your way to make someone angry/upset.

Huh. If that's the difference, then there's a lot of people out there that have the two confused and bully when they claim to troll.

I have never had to run into any form of online bullying because, as it turns out, the PS3 version of the game ships with this awesome "mute everyone" feature. I simply plug a USB headset mic into the system and stash the headset behind the PS3. Turn the system's audio options to use the headset, and all the verbal abuse (if any there be; I honestly have no idea) goes through that, and I can still hear the game sounds through the stereo. It's even easily disabled through the system menu if I get into a game where I do want to hear the voice chat in case someone says something useful..... although that too has yet to happen.
