So they don't feel like redundant characters...

Kaidan feels more like a nice-guy type while people accuse Ashley of being racist all the time. I feel like Kaidan would be more paragon while Ashley is renegade.

Don't get it.

Basically it's more dramatic if the VS is diametrically opposed to the main character...
You're in conflict with the VS for half the series, so I find it makes for a better story if there's also a personality clash...

Which is why I recommend Ashley for Paragon Shepard and Kaidan for Renegade Shepard...
They offer a better character contrast and the potential for more conflict...

They are "that" member...
The one you find yourself up against through the course of the story...

I see, from a storytelling perspective, it does seem more interesting. Too bad they removed all the stuffs that make Ashley Ashley in the third game. There were so many instances where she could express her distrust in aliens but didn't. She seems very generic now. :(

Kaidan. I played Mass Effect on the PS3, so Mass Effect 3 is the first time I got to spend any real time with either of them so sadly it's ruined Ashley for me.

I couldn't care less about either in ME1, but in ME3 it's definitely Kaidan. I've never had much use for Ashley's combat skills, not when Garrus is available, and as far as characterization goes... well, this may sound strange, but whenever my FemSheps talk with Ashley, their conversations are just so awkward. It's as if both of them aren't really listening to each other and are just spouting their lines to get it over with. Perhaps this is kind of the point, in the beginning of the game at least, but it still doesn't sit right with me. Kaidan's suspicious too, but with him there's also this sense of camaraderie that's still there from the first game.

And as far as skills go, Kaidan is one of the most useful squad members of the game. The guy can perform in any kind of squad set-up. His nice health, strong barriers and the fact that he can use assault rifles makes him even better. The only reason I had Ashley with me from time to time was to trigger Ken and Gabby's banter, a bug that was fixed in the EC. Now the only reason she survived Virmire is because I want to experience everyone's Citadel DLC content for myself.

She had a character arc...
She was never pro Cerberus or Terra Firma...
She had trust issues to overcome, both with the council and with zombie cerberus shepard...

I find it quite appropriate, especially if she has to end up shooting Udina to save the other councilors...

I dunno who the Kaiden dude is, oh wait, no, I do, that mustache twirling Kaidan's evil twin brother. How come so many years passed and people still can't get his name right, I just can't understand it xD

Anyways, originally, first VS was Ashley for me, but after few minutes, I reloaded Virmire. Kaidan opens up to romanced FemShep more than anyone in ME1. Ashley was sister in arms from the start. Which was a pity, because he had much potential too. Apart from Jump Zero, we never got to know from where he got the recommendations and decorations Chakwas mentioned. I romanced him for those bits of unique dialogue, and he grew on me later. And because I wanted to know why he gets so dissed everywhere.

As I don't have a pt with Ashley, I don't know how severe her character assassination was, so she's a good memory, and listening to the unused audio files proving there were plans to save them both made me tear up. Ash was my Shepard's foil. She was tremendously fun, well written character even with those jarring bits of dialogue she and Kaidan shared. Now that I think about it, if I was in her shoes, I'd react to many things just as she did during the first time on the Citadel.

I liked my human squad. ME was my first Sci-Fi based RPG which included other races, and Kaidan and Ash were perfect to get into it from human perspective (I'm not a fan of aliens).

But I decided to save Kaidan and I don't regret it. Also, Sbarge reading the Horizon letter is in my canon.

I will always choose Ashley. I never thought she was racist. Just cautious about all the aliens because of her family history. Having a different writer in ME3 won't change that. Even though it was kind of a disappointment because they missed out on development of her character. And as for Kaidan I have enough bros in Wrex, Garrus, and Grunt

Kaiden is a dead man 99.9% of my saves

Possibly less if I romanced liars or no one..

Both.

Though I feel like the only one.

I like Ashley as a romance the most, and Kaiden as a pal, so I actually have her dead in 5 of my six Shepard's. Just never felt right not romancing her. She's the romance of my main Shepard.

I do it exactly like this, I either romance her and she lives, or I go for Miranda and I save Kaidan. Kinda wish we could've left Liara back on Virmire since her romance is boring.

In ME1, I loved them both equally.

In ME3, only Kaidan.

It is tough because the characters didn't feel consistent, which is why I think a lot of people are saying they prefer one character in one game, but another in a later game. Frankly, I thought Ash was great in ME1, but her cameo in ME2 and some of her dialog in ME3 were really tough to take seriously. Kaidan, I always liked because he was part of Shep's original team, predating the events of ME1. But I didn't like a lot of Kaidan's story or personality, I always thought he was a bit dry and boring.

Kaiden is boring.. and gay lol. He just feels too weak/soft.
Ashley is whiny and annoying.

Both are pretty crap compared to the rest, even Vega is better.

Overall I prefer Ashley marginally but if you want a bonus power then Kaden has Reave and Barrier which are better than Ashley's bonus powers.

I keept Ashley, but, tbh I'm not that bothered. A chocie had to be made, and my original shepards were Biotics mostly so picking the non-biotic made sense for squad composition.

Kaidan. In my first playthrough I chose Ashley, big mistake, apparently you can kill her in the citadel coup, sadly I was unable to confirm that in my playthrough and had to refuse letting her join my squad.

Ashley every time. I can't stand Kaidan, not once have I considered letting him live past Virmire. I will admit though, I have no idea why I don't like him.

I have yet to play a file where she survived yet. What happend to her in ME3 that made people dislike her. Is it her makeover?

No, it's the thing, that Ashley seems to have 0 interaction with the Crew.
Kaidan will play Poker, he will make a comment with Adams about stuff that happened in ME1, which was very touching. And other stuff.
You have great friendship scenes in my opinion with Kaidan. With Ashley it's again about her sisters. On top of that a drunken Ashley on the floor, which feels OOC in my opinion and the trend continues in the DLC.
You get in the Citadel DLC again, an amazing friendship scene with Kaidan. With Ashley you get drunk AGAIN. Yes it's a Star Wars reference, but a lot of people won't get it and I wanted some quality time with Ashley, not a drinking game.

For me, it has nothing to do with the makeover. In my opinion Kaidan feels like a friend, who was there in ME1 and talks about it. And Ashley is that drunken lady on the floor.

Well I have a Shepard for each L.I. and so I only saved ash when I had M-Shepard romance her and the only other time I saved Ash was on my F-Shepard/Thane save-game.

Although Kaiden & Ashley are both my least liked squad-mates I still like them both but Ashley just has more things for me to dislike about her & As for Kaiden the only thing I really disliked about him was him turning down the 3-way with Liara in ME-1.

I suppose it can come down to a number of things. Depending on what style of character you play as, it might be more beneficial to save one rather than the other. If you're a soldier, save the biotic, and vice versa. For dramatic purposes, depending on whether you're paragon or renegade, you might want to pick the character that clashes with your personality for more drama, or the one that goes along with your personality for happy families. There's a lot that can go into making the decision.

I pretty much ignore all that though and just save Kaiden every time because Ashley is a ****.

Kaiden is so frickin boring...and he get's killed way too easy. Ash is a bit b*tchy, but at least she kills Geth good...and isn't too hard on the eyes either.

Legion displays more emotional range than Kaiden.
