I picked Ash since she was a previous romance. But Kaidan did a 360 in ME3 and actually grew a little bit interesting. Whilst Ash got screwed over. Whoever her writer was, did crap. That's my opinion.

Still Ash over Kaidan.

I'm consistently surprised by the fact that people say Ash doesn't get much content- do people not count the multiple conversations in the hospital?

I do.
However, it's just three dialogues you easily can miss if not interested in Ash. Plus: those three dialogues are the ONLY three dialogues where you can hook up with Ashley before starting / continueing the romance arc, which consists of the memorial scene, the date and the sex in vanilla game.

I think characters like Liara or Garrus got a tad more opportunities to talk to Shepard B)

That said, I do enjoy Ashley's romance in ME3. I just have to grit my teeth and smile when she starts into the "You worked with Cerberus to stop the Collectors, how can I trust you?" garbage.

Personally, man, I'm tired of gritting my teeth with Ashley in ME3.... for my 2nd MaleShep Joseph, I should've gone with my instincts and had the character romance Jack in ME2 instead of staying loyal to Ashley. <_<

If I remember correctly, both Ash and Kaidan have the same numbers fo scenes, they just happen at different places.

I'm doing my Ashleymance PT now and I feel I've got about the same amount of content so far as I had in my Liaramance PT.

Plus how is it the dev's fault that players can miss those dialogues? If you're interested in Ash, they are there. If you're not, you skip them (like the conversation between Liara and Aethyta, if you don't go hunting for it).

I'm not sure of the exact numbers, if you're talking about cutscene interactions/conversations, I'm not sure Ash is that shortchanged.

^ well, Ash doesn't say much while on board of the Normandy. She doesn't comment missions that often and if she does, it's "Cerberus, Cerberus, Cerberus." The good Ash, you know, the sassy one with poems and religion, the one that stands her position - this Ash is gone in ME3.

I still think that some evil psychopathic girl killed Ashley between ME2 and ME3 and destroyed the body and did a thorough background check and memorized it and got plastic surgery to look close enough to Ashley to fool people and took her place.

...At least it explains a few things.

I choose Kaidan 90 percent of the time, a decent guy who's good to have because he's a sentinel and worthy of being a Spectre. I prefer Kaidan's friendship over Ashley's friendship/romance.

Well, Ashley's "friendship" doesn't work in ME3. That's bad especially for fem!Shep players who like to keep Ash as "sister in arms" around, since she feels like a good/close friend in ME1. ME3 ... nah. Either romance her or send her with Hackett.

Both characters were remarkable and deep in the first game. While they made comments that seemed to earn the fanbase's scorn for one reason or another, they had a set of core believes, values and quirks that maked them as interesting and dynamic characters. In ME3, Kaidan managed to become very chilled out, learned to let things go and became an all-round badass teammate - but despite these character traits, Kaidan remains very much as shafted as Ashley.

The traits that originally attrached me - and by extention my Shepard - to Ashley, is the fact that she liked poetry, was a cool big sis to her young siblings and never, ever, EVER bit her tongue when asked for her opinion. She also had very realistic views about the security risk posed by Wrex, Garrus and Liara - being a blood-thrist merc, a cowboy ex-cop and the daughter of the evil Commander's Lieutenant. All and all, very realistic concerns. These are dropped completely by 3, save for one instance during the hosptial. Replaced with a constant distrust of Shepard, hatred of Cerberus and... well, that's about it.

The VSs got epically shafted in ME3.

That's pretty realistic given what happens over the course 1, 2 and 3.

Seriously, if she'd b*tched to be me about my bro Vakarian in 3, I would've thrown her out of the airlock.:?

Kaidan is chill. So I prefer him.

Ashley doesn't seem to be getting along with the rest of the crew, she says Tali is like her little sister but I hardly see it.

And that's important to me because the crew is supposed to be a family, and the only person I see her interacting with is Vega.

The only reason I didn't switch VS because I didn't want to play ME2 all over again just to do that. It's one of the downsides of being a console gamer and the reason why I'm getting a Gaming PC soon.

Well, in 3, they'd been to hell and back together by that point. Each and every one of them had a crap tonne of character development and developed bonds as friends and family.

EDIT: As _Syn_ Pointed out. Ashley is supposedly friendly with the crew, but only two people interact with her, James and Shepard.

ME1 Ash was my favourite Mass Effect character of all, yet my answer to this thread has to be Kaidan. Thanks, ME3! Posted Image

I think I'll agree that Ash has some poor content on the second of the game, on the ship. Its a shame. Probably exacerbated in perception by the fact she is not on the ship in the first half of the game.

Always Kaidan. I liked Ash in ME1, but in ME3 I found her annoying.

I usually saved Ashley in ME1. I mean, I strongly disagree with her views, I am not religious and poetry isn't really my thing, but I thought her character was more interesting and better written than Kaiden (probably a "love to hate" thing)...Chris L'Etoile was definitely one of the better writers Bioware had.

From what I've seen on YT, Kaidan is better in ME3, but I haven't imported my "Kaidan save" to ME3 yet.

I have always chosen Kaidan with my Shepards are he is using my LI when make Shepard and sometimes female Shep.

One day I'll save Ash. I just feel her story is better completed through her sacrifice in ME1... But maybe it's because I always play the story that way too...

God, the truth in this hurts.

Ash was definitely my "bro" character in ME1 -- easily the one character my Shepard latched onto and had a sense of camaraderie with. Same in ME2 -- Ash being mad at my Shep made me sad. She was in that game for all of 5 minutes and I managed to care about her just as much then.

In ME3, I wanted her to have the same level of friendship with my Shepard as Liara and Garrus were allowed to. I wanted her to come and find Shepard on the Normandy and talk to her like they could. But it felt like there was this icy barrier between her and femshep that you really couldn't break. Hell, even during the hospital scene, I couldn't tell Ash how much she meant to me. Was able to tell Kaidan that, even if I had no intention of romancing him, but not her. It sucked.

^ as I said before, Ashley's new writer simply had no real idea what to do with her. Her romance works so far, but it feels incomplete thanks to lacking content.

Pajuschka said, he found Ash annoying in ME3. I think that can't be - she's not there. A ship without Ash would feel the same in ME3 like one with her, since she doesn't interact with anyone on her own. Vega, Garrus, even Traynor - they do.

Kaidan overall.  I loved Ashley as sisterly best friend for my Shep in ME1; it made it all the more tragic come Virmire.  But then in ME2 she became snippy with me.  At least Kaidan told me to be careful instead of just going, "Whatever, see ya later."

I don't really like what I've seen of ME3 Ashley in videos.  I feel like they altered a great character for the sake of creating an expy for Miranda, which shouldn't work since Ashley appeared first.  I like the hairstyle, but I don't like the logic behind it for a soldier.

Besides, I think Ashley's sacrifice on Virmire is a better end for her character.  I don't know why, it just feels more suiting for her in my canon playthrough.  There's that and who doesn't love Kaidan's support in ME3.

Bill Casey wrote...
Has anyone ever left their LI to die on Virmire? I kinda want to do a paragon-femshep who romances Kaidan and then loses him on Virmire, turning her bitter and more renegade leading to a relationship with Garrus in ME2. Do the games recognize the romance and death or is it treated the same as the regular virmire death?

I did that on my first playthrough unintentionally.  I ended up in a romance with Kaidan but then, come Virmire, I sent him to his doom with the bomb.  I chose to save Ash because her group had the most lives at stake, even if her LI was... well, her LI.  And that's when my Shepard unlocked her 7th chakra and mastered the Avatar State.  The Paramore achievement didn't unlock 'cause I didn't fade to black with Kaidan in the end.  =(

EDIT:

Also am I the only one who hates the line delivery in Ashley's romance lines in Citadel?  I cringe whenever she says, "Sir, yes sir." *cringe*

Kaidan. No contest.

I will say that I thought it was amusing that people finally started giving Kaidan his due after ME3 because Ashley kept harping on their Sheps about Cerberus. To see so many people turn on her and say they will always leave her on Virmire now because she was being a witch was funny to me.

Kaidan, with his sexy voice and epic cooking skills.
Ash always came across as way too tightly wound, and she was always a bit of a dick, but too each his/her own.
