The animations in DA2 scared me - I was afraid Hawke's waist would snap in half. When I walk I have a slight sway, but I am a little more deliberate in my gate. Of course as some people have fairly pointed out: not everyone walks the same. Maybe a safe in-between?

I liked the cocked hip to one side animation when standing still, otherwise the walk cycle shouldn't be so...cartoony. That's what I got from it. As someone else said, Skyrim's feminine walk cycle was good.

A middle ground seems to be the consensus. Skyrim was okay, except in that game, the top half looked a bit strange. Specifically the arm placement. When walking, a female character's arms are held very close to her torso and don't move very much. Male characters have the opposite problem- their arms are placed farther away from their torso than they should. It's strange looking especially if your male character is not very muscular.

Very true. And the running animations were just terrible in DA. M!Hawke looked like a:

As does any male protagonist in Dragon Age. Their running cycle cracks me up every time.

I love the male DA2 running animation. Usually I play MMOs, and they're just so laughably bad it's ridiculous.

What do you guys think about SW:TOR's running animations?

Never played it, so I can't say, but in general, MMO characters tend to be very 'bouncy' when they run.

I think Bioware should just put in an option for players to pick either effiminate or masculine animations. Cause in DA:O the females often ran like men, including the horrendous gorrila arms run in combat. Ultimately, if I played a female character, i'd pick the exaggerated DA2 hip sway and girly idle anims over the ape walk/run in DA:O.

I agree that female Hawke's walk was silly and inconguious. I also agree that female Shepard's walk was equally silly.

LadyHawke's hip sway kept me distracted during those long hours of wandering around the Wounded Coast looking for so-and-so's kidnapped son/daughter/kitten/etc.

I loved her animation. I find it sad that when a woman walks with confidence she has to be compared to a prostitute.

Hmm, I actually rather liked FemHawke's running animation. It was certainly an improvement over DA:O.
I could live with a more subtle approach, though.

I say keep the swaying hips and have males do over the top swagger walks.

lol, I'm simply suggesting that they tone down the catwalk strut.

Looking at Square Enix games and the female protagonists might help a lot with developing an animation for a female characters walk. Lightning's walk could be incorporated into the female walk in Dragon Age games :).

Yes!

To be fair dude Shep's animations are pretty bad to.

Oi vey I replayed ME2 and just...wat. That neck twist Shep did and the way he was hulking and...wat.

You remember that's a bug, right? If you run and then stop, and then start again just right, Shepard runs with his/her head straight.

I like the walk/run animation especially compared to the ME games and DAO.

I'm not that bothered. I really liked how my female character ran in Skyrim though. And I didn't like DAO's stiff female running animations, or ME2's 'gorrila on the move' look.

I find it a little ridiculous that people are saying a swaying run doesn't 'fit the character's personality'. Idle animations, sure that's a concern, but with walking - unless you've trained yourself to walk in a particular way, then the way you walk is the way you walk, and has bugger all to do with personality.

Agreed. Ladies keep swaying that booty and dudebros now walk around like they're wearing a thong shirt and finished bench press.

100% on board.

I rather liked the girly animations for LadyHawk, but I think that's because I prefer to play female mages who are powerful, but sensual and feminine at the same time. It worked for me. Though, I have to admit, when I decided to play a a less girly warrior Hawk, the animations seemed out of character.

I wouldn't mind girly animations in DA3, but I would be okay with a more natural animations as well.

Maybe you should be able to pick an animation set. They already make multiple, right (ie Aveline with her tree trunk stance, etc.)? Or is it only their resting stances that are affected, not movement?

Aveline walks the same way Isabella does.
The walk works for Isabella. For Aveline... not so much

I support changing the female walking animation.
But it's very low priority.

I wouldn't mind having the female running animation toned down a bit. Or perhaps getting the option to switch between male and female running animations, if possible.

It has to do with design, I think. If - for instance - Merrill had been a dark and cynical character, she probably would have been given facial features to better reflect that rather than the appearance she has now, even though people's faces have nothing to do with their personalities.

A neutral walk would be quite lovely. In fact, I use the mod that gives the DudeHawke walk to LadyHawke and it works incredibly well to me. Much better, imo. DudeHawke's walk is more neutral, it's just walking. It isn't swaggering, strutting, brutish lumbering, whatever. He's just walking. I'd like to have that for LadyInquisitor in DA3. A nice, neutral, casual walk.

No jaunty hip idle standing stances either, please. That is just as terrible. Breaking your hip to thrust it out to the side doesn't seem very enjoyable to me. I don't like how that jauntyhip/hand-on-askew hip has become a 'woman only' pose in games. Many men stand with their weight on one foot, hips tilted, etc. as well. It's simple a posture to relieve pressure from one foot to another in your stance. Not a lady only thing. Really, the only reason to make it a lady-only thing is to exaggerate the curves of a woman's figure, to give it more 'sexiness'/appeal with body emphasis, imo. And that's really not needed. Moreso in games where the *player* is offered the choice to roleplay their character how they desire, and to be able to craft their own protagonist.

Neutral stances, neutral walks are a good middle ground. When I say neutral, I don't mean without any sort of personality or flow. Just less emphasis on making something overtly stereotypical with masculine or feminine characteristics.
