Because SR2 was focused on having 3 gangs that the Saints have to deal with to get their city back

Yeah it was not unfocused. It was totally focused on telling the tale of an american street gang protecting and gaining turf in their city. Street gangs do not have just one enemy.

That being said Maero really knew how to get under the skin of the Saints and didn't waste time like the other gang leaders. He hit the Saints where it hurt, and all he needed to do that was a chain and a truck, not an intergalactic army and computer simulations.

I would say for me Zinyak is about on par with him, but I will always enjoy killing Maero more then when I killed Zinyak because I truely hated that ****.

But then again... he did f*ck up Biz Markie....

I liked Maero as a character, but I honestly felt the Boss was the real antagonist of that particular side story. After the Boss spurns Maero's offer, he spends almost every mission reacting instead of acting. The only proactive thing he does is threatening Vogel to get Brotherhood released from jail. The Boss basically puts the screws to Maero over and over; and bit by bit, forces him into a corner he never escapes.

He actually struck me as one of the weakest antagonists in SR2 because despite the writers telling me Maero was supposed to be a badass, he repeatedly came off as ineffectual and foolish. There was never a point where I thought to myself, oh yeah, this guy is a real danger. Even killing Carlos was essentially a punk move. Torture the weak link because it'll hurt the Boss, but also because he was the only weakness the Saints really had in that story. I'm not even sure Carlos's torture can be attributed to Maero. It seemed more like Jessica's idea. She saw a problem looming from the get-go while Maero was all like yeah yeah shuddap, I got this. :P

The Boss had her sociopath meter turned up to eleven in the Brotherhood arc too; which just made Maero seem soft in comparison. The mission when she is forced to mercy kill Carlos is the only exception. Although the Boss not mentioning Carlos before killing Maero kinda negated that IMO. Instead she chastises him over not offering her a bigger cut to begin with. It just made the whole arc come off as picking on the little guy; which to me seemed like the heavily tatooed giant, oddly enough. >.>

I haven't played SR2... is it worth playing? How does it compare to 3 and 4?

The graphics are vastly inferior and combat is much clunkier. Character customization is still impressive. Better than SR3 and SR4 in ways, actually. There's some great activities that were sadly pulled from later games as well. SR2's story is also grittier with several dark moments. There's a fair bit of comedy; however, so don't expect it to reach deeply depressing levels. That said, it's vastly toned down compared to the latter two games. SR2 is definitely worth playing.

On a side note it has the best song selection IMO. Not the most important thing in the grand scheme, but it must be mentioned. XD

Edit: Yes, the PC port is pretty bad. While my personal experience with it has been positive, others have reported serious issues with that version. Get it on console instead if you can.

FUN FACT
Did you know that CD Projekt, those "wonderful" developers responsible for the Witcher series are also responsible for the Saints Row 2 port.

THEY DID A ****** POOR JOB @%#@QJ%#@:LK%:L#@K!:L%K:#LK%:L#@K:L%K#@:K%:L#K:%L

All my rage to them.

EDIT: Game is still totally worth playing on PC nonetheless (I only played it for the first time a few months ago), it's just a shame to see such a gem of a game be marred by a crappy porting job.

I played through SR2 about a week before SR4 just for the story and characters. Got the game during a humble bundle so it cost me nothing really. The port is not good by any stretch of the imagination but i was able to ignore most of that and just focus on the reasons why i even played the game.
I did very much enjoy the story and the characters. On those two subjects i feel SR2 is better than SR3 but not as good as SR4. Gameplay wise i felt SR2 was quite a drag and both SR3 and SR4 are miles better.

All in all i had a good time but it's a one playthrough kind of game for me

I just had Roddy Piper in my team running around and he made a comment towards Duke Nukem, I laughed so hard I choked.

Spoilers:

Roddy says "If I find that Crew Cutt wearing A********* in here I'm gonna kill him for stealing my best lines.

- In the Duke Nukem games Duke *Borrows* a lot of one liners from the movie "They Live" which starred Roddy Piper.

It's a ****ty PC port, good game, but very bad port. Not to mention you don't even get the dlc on the PC. I'm lucky, my friend has the first two on the 360 so if I feel like playing those two I just head overt here.

As for how it compares. SR2 and Sr4 are on par for me, SR following with Sr3 last. Sr3 is ok but it is the weakest in the series which just benfitis from better gameplay over SR1/2.

Meh, don't really care much for the graphics. I'll only really be playing it for the story, and to gain more backstory and insight into the Boss and some of the other characters.

That's good to hear about the character customization being just as awesome.

Wasn't really a huge fan of the song selections in SR3/4, so that's a huge plus.

Clunkier combat could be a problem, but if the story and the astmosphere has me immersed into the world, I'm willing to look past it.

In other words, you've convinced me to get it. Thanks for the input!

Oh, and I think I might just pick it up for the 360 since the PC port is terrible according to everyone. Thanks for the heads up, guys.

You also have access to the dlc that explains how the Saints get control of Ultor.

I like how you go around the ship having non stop sex with everyone in sight and there was never an end to it.. Though CID's romance was very awkward. Curious to see how romances play out in saints row 5.

It was funny how no one commented on the fact my Boss slept with *everyone*. I've been trying to score all the achievements (Two left to go! Whee!) so I always took the romance option. I hope Volition expands on these beyond a single scene if they ever include them again. A few such as Gat's were touching as a one off, but most were clearly comedic. I have a feeling they were just poking fun at BioWare games, and we won't see them again. :pinched:

I don't care about graphics either, but I had to mention them for the sake of fairness. You'll see a lot more of Johnny, Shaundi, and Pierce in SR2. Although Shaundi and the Boss are so different in SR2 it may be a little jarring. I think Volition either got a new writer for SR3, or decided to radically change the personalities of those characters to be more appealing to a wider audience. The Boss is downright wicked in SR2. All those jabs about her being a sociopath are going to make a whole lot more sense. XD

The main thing that makes combat clunkier is the lack of a sprint button and poorer animation. It'll feel familiar; just... primitive, I guess.

As far as music, I suppose it's up to personal taste. I found every radio station listenable in SR2. Even KRhyme had its share of catchy songs IMO. Hope you enjoy the game. :)

There are rumours floating around that Volition may try to clean up SR2 on PC since they announced the SDK's for SR3&4 but since a different company handled the port it is unknown if anything big will be done, they are interested in attempting something.

Some modders have also requested Volition release SR2 on a DRM free client like GOG so they can go deeper into the source code and fix even more than what GOTR can do (They would need to alter the main EXE but Steam is a bump in the road here)

I know, i was there. And am also currently replaying it.

I suppose it's more charitable to call it a split focus then unfocused.

I've read that page before, Zjar, but thanks for the thought. :) To be honest, those tidbits never fully satisfied my curiosity. It explains why SR3's story and Shaundi's characterization was such a mess; but there wasn't anything about the Boss in there that I can recall. I inferred her softening up between games was part of the whole lightening of SR's tone thing, but I've yet to see a source explicitly claim it. I guess it may always remain a mystery to me.
