2 out of the 3 main villains in DA2 were male (Anders and Orsino), and 1 of them were female (Meredith). So lets go for a female one this time.

Er, only the Arishok was a villain. Anders never had to be and Orsino doesn't deserve the title, as he wasn't written for the part and had it crudely shoved in at the last minute because some jackass in development wanted another boss fight quickly.

Helping a psychotic serial killer make a frankestein monster out of Hawke`s mom seems rather villainous to me. Then turning into a freaky abomination and trying to kill everyone.

Either, the antagonist is whomever opposes your shifting ideals.

Why does there need to be a villain? There must always be an antagonist, but an antagonist doesn't need to be evil or a villain, they are just pushing the story along for the protagonist.

I would like Dragon Age 3 to be more mature than a 10 year olds cartoon about good guys and bad guys.

then please name anything thats mature that doesnt have some form of villain as a driving plot, and techincally Meredith wasnt evil, she was more driven from a past(and recent incidents) as well as her job to control mages, where as most villains cause destruction because they like it or wants to get rid of someone of importance(protagonist), and nothing can change their minds

Ultima 4. No main villain in that game. All about teaching the kingdom`s inhabitants about virtues.

Might as well stick to male villains, they're safer. No one complains when men are depicted in a negative way.

Does it really matter?
I would rather see if villains would get portrayed like in Game of Thrones or the Witcher series

Revan and Saren were good example of how Bioware handled the villains, i would count Illusive Man too but his character got ruined in ME3 which is sad.

What i want from villains is to have some background around them and not making them completely evil, some gray color has to be in there. In other words i don't want a red eye renegade character with eye patch equipped with one bad liners for every equation.

Harbinger, Kai Leng, Oleg Petrovsky, TIM (ME3) and Arishok were all doing these things.

ME3 TIM begs to differ.
It depends on the writing. I don't care about the gender of the villain, as long as he/she's well written.

How about at least one main villain of each gender?

I want a sensible villian or as someone suggested an antagonist. I appreciated have someone who believed he was doing good like Loghain, and even Anora to an extent because she wanted power. Barring that possibly a Sociopath (I know extremes) but not one that is extreme or depicted as crazy. I'd like to see a really top notch Female villan but if it's a well written top notch male villian I won't be dissapointed.

This is really a moot point, I think if Bioware learned anything from their last couple games, its that trying to do something different just doesn't pay off, stick to the hero defeating the big bad unambiguously evil villain or people will whine, a lot.

Either gender is fine, it would be nice to make them 3D like the main character actually did something to make them angry at them, like killing a loved one or something, I wouldn't be unhappy if this didn't happen, it would just be an interesting twist especially because the main character (I presume from the title) is an inquisitor. Meredith was a little 3D given her past, didn't excuse her actions, but still made her somewhat 3D.

Though I do agree with Conduit0 keeping to what they are successful at is good enough.

Shakespeare... the antagonists are not inherently evil, they are on the other side of the protagonist driving the story forward.

Just because someone is working against you does not make you evil, that's a very child-like response to a situation. Oh my boss is an idiot, look at all the crap he makes me do, he is pure evil! etc.

Well, no one should rule out the possibility the villain is an established character like the Empress, so their gender really doesn't factor into it. They are the villain that the plot is built around and they were already male or female.

Personally, BioWare has chosen their villain's voice actors so well in the past I'd just be excited for whatever voice actor they can possibly fit into the role. Man, Meredith's VA was amazing. I'm so sad we didn't get to see more of her.

Male. Saren, Loghain, TIM, Irenicus, Sarevok, TNO, Darth Malak, hell, even Diablo(2).

I don't remember a female antagonist half as cool.

OP, that the most arbitary question I ever seen raised in this forum. And I have seen quite a few. You don't know anything about the vilain personality or motivation, but all you care is what's it gender? Hmm, I'd love to make a thread asking people if they think the term "darkspawn" is offensive.

Since I guess that flemeth and/or one her daugthers may be the culprit, female I guess?

Maybe the devs feel female antagonists are just not very threatening? Flemeth could turn into a dragon, and I still didn't find her very intimidating (probably because I allready killed her once in DA:O). It's like "okay, so you're a dragon and curbstomped a bunch of darkspawn (and realy, who hasn't?); but what have you done lately?" Image IPB
