It should be this gorgeous slim brunette with an enormous chest. She's dressed in a string bikini and fights with two katanas. Because obviously katanas are superior weapons all around.

Doesn't matter. When creating the antagonist they should come up with their motivations first and why those motivations conflict with the protagonist (who should be driving the plot forward). After coming up with the motivations for an antagonist they should then come up with personality and relationships with other characters, and THEN appearance which would include gender. Their appearance should probably reflect the antagonist's personality but that's not entirely necessary.

Doesn't matter but I think strong female characters like Meredith are a plus.

You know, when they aren't ruined like she was.

Ideally, a villain should be well-written and compelling. Neither trait or quality is dependent upon gender, nor should be. Give me a baddie with a good story, who inspires fear and/or ire, and I'm good.

THANK YOU whykikyouwhy!

This, so much this! I admire villains like Tywin Lannister, Bane, Joker and Loghain. Villains who are intelligent, have motives, are complex and perhaps even heroes. I want a villain who stands for something, a villain I can hate, but admire.

I would normally say it doesn't matter... But I have to be honest, gender isn't interchangeable for characters, not for me at least. If a character had their gender switched, I would certainly perceive them differently. Example?

Alistair as a character. Cute, but I can't say I really saw any depth in him. He felt shallow and empty, like he existed to fulfill some white knight fantasy. Charmingly innocent and unprepared for life to become awful. Had he been a woman I probably would have appreciated his character more, I would have seen the fear over the responsibility that Kingship would bring him. I would have appreciated the blind anger he felt for Loghain over Duncan's death and how much his honour demanded justice... But, as it stands, all I really see is him throwing a temper tantrum whenever I choose to spare Loghain.

Of course it's impossible to say what kind of affect a Player's perceptions will have on a character until the finished result it out and about. Gender may appear irrelevant until people's perceptions take over and they begin to view the character as something completely different from the original concept...

So I suppose, given the unpredictable nature of Player perception, it really doesn't matter what gender the character is, because the final result will be impossible to determine.

Hmm... It appears I have foiled my own argument.

As long as they're really manipulative and not uber obvious I don't really care.

I'm afraid I do not care about this one bit. All I ask is that the villain (whomever, or whatever it, she, he, they is/are) is/are (a) believable one(s) and they're not portrayed true villains only to be turned into dumb slaves later on and be turned into a total mockery (I'm looking at you ME3!)

Female, because Gaider is a feminist who like to over rate females. Over rated Mary Sue females in fantasy games annoy me. I would like to see more reality in females who are still subjected to the dark side of human nature like lust for sex, greed, jealousy, bad temper, manipulater etc..

Meredith was a good example but she was driven insane by the idol.

Isn't it rumored to take place mainly in Orlais? If so, the main villian should be a puddle. Ruining Orlesian shoes is probably the most heinous of crimes one could commit.

A man could never be as heartless as a woman could.

I'm all for female villains.

Male. Saren, Loghain, TIM, Irenicus, Sarevok, TNO, Darth Malak, hell, even Diablo(2).

I don't remember a female antagonist half as cool.

Kreia from Kotor2? Mellisan from BG2:TOB was pretty cool as well.

Irrelevant. Good character is good regardless of gender

Yes, I would assume so. The only other option is a demon or darkspawn of some sort that does not seem to have a gender. But that would not realistically fit within the plot of the game.

So I would say yes, the villain should be either male or female.

It should be a demonic llama.

But I guess it's gender is relevant somehow, so we should debate it at length.
