I like the story, i like the characters, the visuals, everything. But currently i don`t even feel like plaing.
Don`t know if i am doing something wrong, someone tell me if i am, but after the ~16th hour of game play i seem to be completely stuck no matter what i am doing.
I started as Human Warrior Noble on normal. The first thing i did was to look if there is two-haned weaps tree. I like two-handed swords. Can`t exactly rember my inital stats but it is not my first nor last RPG, so i prolly did something pretty warriorish a lot of str, some dex, plenty of con. (i did neglected wisdom i think and kind of have shortage of stamina, but i don`t think that`s the problem. From then onwards i started distributin in a way to unlock the two-handed skills, be able to wear heavy armors and two handed swords, have enough dex to hit (is this actually nececery or am i doing it wrong>?) and some con (maybe it should have been con only>?) i also put like 1 or two points in cunning which is completely useles for warrior so i regret it. I thought i could use some of the skills but besides the specific warrior one everything else is secondary at best. I started survival because of the resistance bonus (everything else looked even crapier, thou the first one used for persuations and lieing might have been better) maybe some points into wisdom too.
Whatever. I am currently lvl 9 with berserk unlocked. I think my equipment suck but i explored everything that i could exlore did every quest i could and it is ~the best i could have. I have constant shortage of potions and gold but that`s yet another problem.
I remember only the stats of my main. 36 str (bonuses and all), 19 dex, 13 wisdom 12 cunning 16 con. I use tier 4 two handed sword tier 3 heavy chainmail set (i swear this is the best i could put my hands on so far or i did something really wrong). The only thing i can improve short term is my main armor and his will go to the secondary tank Alister (which using shield and all is supposed to be the main tank, but he suck at that).
Speaking of which, my party consist of Alister, the Dog, and Morrsomething (the hot witch). It`s basicly one survival DD (me) one tank Alister, one hp tank with nice mass stun the Dog and one caster, debuffer Morrisomething.
This party is obviosly not working, but actually i can`t imagine one that could. (Everyone besides my main is on auto lvling)
Currently i am following the Ashesh of Something that are supposed to save Earl Someone arc. And here comes the core of all my problems. I get my ass handed to me. Constantly. And it`s not like i am just clicking right there and w8ting for my guys to pwn and be done with it. Found it that this is not/will not work long time ago. I've set all my char tactics the best way i could, and this is not helping too, so currently i am basicly micromanaging almost every single action via spam of pauses. And i still get pwned. It`s just sureal. The smallest encounter i had recently was 4 vs 10 or something like that. And all those 10 being easy targets by themselfs together hirt like ****. As it`s obvious by the 3 fighter classes and the one mage my party is relativly defensive one. But if left alone it dies in like 30 seconds.
Here`s a short preview of what all my battles looks like. First i try to pull as little agro as it is possible. I use the terain to loose some of it or something. I usually put my party wherever i think the best position for them will be, and use my main as puller. Once he`s agroed by like 6 or so foes i run back to my party. The first thing i do is to reduce their numbers as much as i can as fast as i can. 1 dies almost instantly because i spam him with my main two-handed most dmging skill and my caster`s most dmging spell. I usually use Alister to shield bash the "boss" if he`s around while the dog tries to mass stun the remaining enemies. By that time 1 is dead, than i concentrate all of my guys on one enemy once he dies on another and so on if i just let them fight whoever they want it`s certain death. This way i manage to take like 4~5 before both my main and Alister are dead. Don`t know why (due to the lack of proper armor i think) but even with potion spaming they just die waay faster than one would expect from fighter class and if i somehow managed to gimp my main, Alister is on auto lvling and has better weap and shield than my main too. If i am lucky i somehow manage to win with mad micomanaging of the mage Morrisomething and the dog as her tank (the dog is my most resiliant tank somehow i actually can`t explain at all that fact). Usually there are like 3~5 remaining archers which i've manage to left behinde from the main group of enemies. But all this is best case scenarior after like 3~4 retries. I am sick of getting pwned and there are some specific battles i can`t win no matter what i do. I think i am following the quests that i am supposed (the main one, i am trying to win that Earl somethig on my side so i am looking for that Ash he needs) to so i have no idea why the enemies are so hard and why they pwn my ass so bad. What lvl am i supposed to be in Denerium (or something... the capital City)
I felt like coming here and whining after when i saw i can`t defeat no one else in Denerium (one of the 2 back alleis is just currently impossible for me tried it like 10 times only to confirm i have absolutely no chance of wining wiht my current characters and gear) I went to do one of the Chantry board quests outside of the city, and outside of it i was gang banget by wolf pack. One would expect that to be casual encounter for some extra XP, but they pwned me so bad i could take exactly 2 wolfs before my entire party was slaughtered.
Maybe i will start over and redo my char with better stating and even if i like it i will lose the dog for full fleged character + i will try to manual lvl alister so i can make him decent tank if not else. Currently i think he`s completly useless in like 80% of the cituations. Even him being a templar is nothing, there is one particual mage NPC that have kicked my ass so many times i wanna cry in despiration. In fact i think all my characters are useless. My main does decent dmg having two handed sword and all but even thou he has as much attack (or whatever the chance to hit is called here) as Alister he misses like hell, combine that with his slow swining, and you get the picture. Alister is doing very little dmg and is not tanking even half as good as he should to compensate his lack of dmg. I think that my strongest characters are the mage Morrisomething and the Dog. It is them that are always alive in the end and once i can focuse on micromanaging them i sometimes actually win.
I have this weird idea of somehow making party of 4 Nukers and just insta spams tons of dmg that`s coming. That`s prolly the only way to win in those constant 4 vs 10 battles, but if one boss like mobs come those nuckers will be beaten up like little children. About the only thing my party shine in is killing single strong mob. I can debuff it and keep it stunned almost till it dies + two-handed weaps users get very nice stun resistance and most "heavy" mobs have some sort of stuns or even mass stuns.
Anyway someone tell me how not to suck. To be honest what i like the most in all RPGs is the story i see em as very colorfull books in which you can chose which chapter to read. But it`s not even half fun if i have to reload every fight 10 times. I was thinking bout easy but i think that will be a waste, played enough action orientated RPGs, not being able to fight is not an option too.

Man, I am doing fine with an archer-spec rogue (a very weak option IMHO). Maybe you need to be pausing more and really micromanaging everything every swing?

The game can be frustrating with the difficulty, but it's a challenge for me, at least in my recent gaming years, all were too easy, finally a game that make me pipe down and not go for the kill right off the bat....

EITHER STOP BEING A SISSY

ATTENTION - if you can get one of your tank and be the scapegoat, then it'll be ez....
MICROMANAGE - yes, do that for EVERY character if you want to live (as I've learned)
USE ABILITIES - "attacking" now isn't good enuf, use your skills and stun/stop/paralyze/watever your enemy.
for me as an rogue-bard, i've developed my own strategy:
- make party hold position
- use stealth to scout enemies troops
- plan/lay traps (i've used until now (the camp after Lothering) more than 70 traps to bait my enemies, stun them, stop them, damage them, and separate them.
- shoot bunch of guys with bow-n-arrows, lure them to the traps, then lure them to the stationed party
- divide and conquer
btw, my main attributes are Strength, Dexterity so yea, im a very weak rogue with tremendous attack prowess.

Also for the tanking using choke points can help. If you fall back to a door way or small hall way you can control the numbers by putting Alistair and your off tank in the door and having using non FF spells from your mage.

Agreeing with Gilead, poisons-making is an essential skill for rogue xD
however, since i'm more of a archer-type rogue, i spent more points on traps (oh beautiful little things that annoy and do tons of damage to mobs)
Go rogue!!!

As you probably figured out, ditch the dog. Grab a rogue for that party.
Make liberal use of poison and traps if you can.
Morigan can deal a huge amount of damage if she is properly managed. You can also take a huge amount of pressure off your group if you get her cone of cold; it freezes enemies in place for 4-10 secs giving you ample time to take out a few. Add in stone fist and she can insta kill a few
Focus fire, having each character take care of a bad guy is not the way to go. Take down the easiest enemies as quick as posible and then deal with the remaining though ones, this will prevent a lot of damage on your party.
Do not ignore Willpower, having a good stamina pool lets you do a lot more damage and adds more status effects to the mix.
You also need a proper tank, Alistair could work but you need him to get Threaten, Shield wall and Taunt to be effective. Make sure Threaten and Shield wall are always active.
SPOILER : If you want a good armor set, head to the dalish area, there are a bunch of tombstones in the forest that summons Revenants, if you can survive the fight (Revenants are HARD!) each one drops a piece of a great plate set(Last piece is in the Temple).

There's no way a game that spend as much time in development as DA:O could possibly be that unbalanced. Therefore I have GOT to be doing something wrong. Damned if I can tell what it is though. Gonna have to go get the strategy guide I guess.
Overall am actually kinda disappointed in the gameplay, controls, and graphics. The story is the only thing saving this game for me so far.

One with a healer.
You have:
Melee damage (You)
Melee damage (Dog)
Tanking (Alistar)
Spell damage (Morrigan)
Kick out Dog and get thee to a white mage.

No, its not just you...this game is, IMHO, insanely hard on even Normal mode. This means that _I_ must be doing something (or lots of things) very wrong.
It's not insanely hard. Yes, you are probably doing something wrong. That's okay. An important part of the game is learning what's right and what's wrong.

I have also found that giving everyone a bow or crossbow helps a lot - either that or throwing poisons as one person said...anything to get some damage in before they even get to you.
One thing I have really enjoyed is that your party notices enemies very early, as soon as they can see them (unless they are behind a door of course) so can plan accordingly.
A nice touch with the Rogue is that you can open all those chests you come across and sell the useless stuff in them for $$$ which helps to get more healing salves etc.
I cannot comment on the later stages yet...I wish I had that much time to play!

Also, go after the weakest members first if you can. They go down the fastest, and therefore lose dps over time. Of course, you might one to take out some of the leaders instead, if their throwing insane spells at you.
Bosses though, I don't know. Just keep reloding. ;D

Once your character gets high enough then things get a little too easy and you might want to bumb it back up to normal.
Which is great about this game you can change the difficulty on a whim.
