The entire reason I bought an XBOX360 was because I heard about this "awesome game" called Mass Effect.  Well, five years later, I've rolled through the 3 games multiple times, read all of the novels, most of the comics, a couple of artbooks, and spent more money on stuff at the Bioware store than I care to remember. . . Yeah, so I am quite hooked. So, what hooked you the most onto Mass Effect?

As for me?
1) The whole "Holy-Cow-This-Game-is-Like-a-TV Show" factor
2) The sense of wonder and exploration that permeated the first game
3) Garrus and Liara
4) Whole design aesthetic which is sort of 1970s-1980s retro-futuristic
5) On the whole the universe was optimistic in its tone

It was a reasonably good Sci-fi tale in a genre that had become stale and uninspiring.

Yeah... I can't say it was the greatest hook ever on my end.

Rented it on a whim from a Civic Video back in 2007, experienced all of your five points, and here I am.

I remember the Galaxy Map, zooming out from a planet, then out from the system, then out from the cluster.. it blew my fragile little mind.

Also, I love the Codex. Everything had an explanation, and I thought that was fantastic.

Yeah, the explanations of the planets was awesome and how they really seemed to create a history for the universe - or at least give it depth.

Bought the Xbox version of ME1 used in 2009 (I think?). Played the first hour of it and thought it was crap. But then I heard a lot of good things about ME2. So I decided to finish the first game in order to have a character to import. That's when I fell in love with the series.

My fiancee actually bought ME1 in '07, during a time where games were sort of a 'meh' thing for me. The setting, soundtrack, voice acting, art style etc had me intrigued while watching over her shoulder so...here I am.

I also played quite a few RPGs out of boredom back in the day, so the thought of one in a sci-fi setting interested me. It was pretty much the first one I'd seen that wasn't in a fantasy setting.

I started on ME2 on my ps3, played ME way later.

1) Dialog wheel and decision making
2) The gritty and retro-futuristic style (specially some of the music)
3) Characters' personalities, motivations and back stories.
4) The variety of ethical themes and conflicts
5) How deep the universe is (going through the codex the first time was great)
6) Loved the way the story was constructed (and the gameplay around it), similar to the "Dogs of War" novel. Recruiting mercenaries from all corners of the galaxy, their preparations, their recon, and finally the assault. Loved the whole loyalty mission/suicide mission mechanic.

I started playing ME about a year ago, and quit after a while because it bored me. But slowly, I kept playing it, and after getting to the romance, I was hooked. I know, weird...but that's what caused me to really care about the characters and the story and my decisions and just about everything. ME2 was even better, but looking back, I'd definitely say ME1's my favorite.

Another thing that got me was how they got away from one of the most annoying sci-fi tropes - mono-purposed/personality species. IE: all the Vulcans are scientists, nearly all of the Twileks are involved in crime.
They built up the reputations of the species and then spent much of their time demolishing it. Asari are ultra-wise and unusually sexy? Yes, until you run into some that Officer Dara who is decidedly all-business or the Asari on the Citadel Docks dressed in filthy miner's clothing. The Krogans are brutes - oh and then there's Charr and polite fellow who greets you on Ilium. Salarians all scientists and bit weenie-ish? Not Maj. Kirrahe.

The characters and the universe. I think Mass Effect has easily the most memorable and cool characters in gaming and one of the coolest scifi universes every created. Also, the replay-ability of the first 2 games, especially ME2- I'm still playing it for about the 10th time and still finding new things. The combat is really good to, it's very addicting in an odd way. ME1's combat was not but ME2 and ME3's actual combat gameplay is very addictive and rewarding especially at higher difficulties. The entire presentation and colors and sound design also. All of the games have an incredible score and sound design. I would say 'choice' but I believe based on how the series ended it was more of an illusion of choice- but still cool and groundbreaking.

But I can't stress enough how connected I got to these characters, most are ME2 characters but all of the games have awesome characters. But Garrus, Tali, Miri, Jack, Legion and Mordin are my favorite. With Wrex being great to. I've never cared about fictional characters like I do the characters of ME. It just sticks with you.

I don't like to throw around absolutes or judgement about gamers and what games make you a 'gamer'. But in my opinion, if you have never played Mass Effect series at least once, I cannot take you serious as a gamer, I know that sounds elitist and arrogant but I truly believe the series is a watershed moment in gaming. It's that good.

The setting is what hooked me. Exploring the Citadel for the first time with Kaidan and Ashley will always be a special memory for me.

First a little history that ties my initial interest in the game. I was a Star Trek Nerd, watched every episode of TNG regularly. I loved Science fiction in general and one movie I really loved, Enemy Mine.
I was looking for a good game to kill time and I happened upon Mass Effect and the picture on the box made me immediately think of Enemy Mine. I played it and was hooked instantly as soon as I could make a female protagonist of whatever class I wanted. Then it was everything else in the game. The voice acting, the codex, the biotics, the guns, the characters. I was hooked for life. No other game delivers this pure fantastic setting and characters. I thought I was playing a GOOD Star Trek game for a change.

I had played KOTOR so when I heard they were making a sci fi of their own and that this time the player's characters would also have a voice I JUMPED at it. I was super excited about getting Mass Effect the moment it came out.

On playing it I loved the dept of the characters and interactions, it just left me wanting more. Right from KOTOR I've not been able to enjoy another RPG on the same level as the ones like Bioware's that offer you, the player, the ability to choose your characters dialogue and actions like that. I never regretted that addiction until the ending of ME3. Now I am kind of stuck. I don't enjoy RPG's that don't offer that level of immersion any more but I also don't like the direction the ending of ME3 took at all. I like dragon age origin well enough but it too came up with an ending that was various shades of grey with no real good ending.

If anyone could point me to a company that makes games like this, but ends with happy endings I would be very grateful. I don't think one exists tho. I don't just mean any old RPG either I mean dialogue wheels and important choices etc

When the SR-1 arrives at the Citadel the first time, I felt like the Mass Effect universe felt lived-in and believable. Reminded me of Star Wars.

I also liked that humanity were the new-comers and not particularly well-regarded. Contrast this with a universe like Star Trek, where the Vulcans stumble upon barely-space-faring Earth, but the Federation ends up being very human-centric for some reason.

The choice system and the fact that they transfer from game to game and affect your story also makes the series very compelling and replayable.

For me mass effect is the best scifi ever. I never did like starwars or startrek. Only ME really got me into SciFi. Its mix of romance, drama and action.. is just amazing and now I just cant get enough of ME the only thing i want is MAOR!
