Heard about the outcry that followed the ME3 ending in march 2012, wondered what that was all about, bought Mass Effect 1 and 2 on a whim, loved the setting and the atmosphere of 1, was mostly unimpressed by 2, bought Mass Effect 3 because it was supposed to be flawless until the last 10 minutes.

I can't remember why I picked it up in the first place. Maybe it was on a whim, but I'd rented it on Gamefly the day before my final day in high school.

I was hooked the moment I saw how much I could customize Shepard. I love me some customization! The story reminded me of Star Wars, so that's a plus too.

The fact I could play as a strong female lead and being a game where there were many strong women without looking like strippers, and how I could respond to dialogue my way. Then the next two games came out and spazzed that up. Now it's my greatest disappointment.

Picked ME1 up for X360 in 2010. I thought "Why the **** not" at VideoEzy and rented it.

After that, my view on RPG games, stories in games and gaming in general changed. Gone from an FPS jockey and Fighting game legend (hurr) to a person who enjoys intelligent video games (Still mashing in Tekken though.)

The story was...the greatest thing I had ever seen in a video game (Gamer since 1998.) It blew me away at how this material was in a video game. And never before had I seen romances incorporated into a video game. It was a next step for me in the world of gaming, I could choose what to say, what to do, I felt seriously immersed. Then after 8 days of playing ME1 and completing it, went straight to the newly released ME2 (Very recent back then, played ME1 in January '10) loved that too.

Waited for ME3...well...you know what happens. First day ME3 released, went to go rent it (Buying video games isn't worth it, renting is much more efficent) finished it and I felt slightly disappointed. Then I went online...

The internet got me more winded up than the game itself. Bioware will never recover from this blow.

I got into Mass Effect 2 because of the awesome customization options open to you. Six classes, the different armor sets and pieces. The great character editor. The weapons where all different and seemed to have personality of their own. These options and the conversation wheel make sure each Shepard is a different person.

Hmm. It was ME1 that got me hooked and ME2 which kept me going. ME3 nearly destroyed that emotional connection.

In ME1? Story, characters, especially Ashley and Garrus. And Shepard too, since it was "my" Shepard. Overall, I liked that game and I couldn't wait for ME2. Did I mention it was Ash that totally got me?

ME2? Characters, mostly characters. The story was okay, but you were distracted from it for too long.

ME3? Lack of characters. Old characters got the short end of the stick, characters of ME2 got ignored. The story was decent until Thessia - then it went south. I dunno why, but ME3 feels like the weakest part, despite coming with the most perfect combat & upgrade systems in the trilogy. Well, maybe I'm too much of a RP person now.

This:

Didn't really come through on what I expected, but it's a clever enough pastiche that it held my interest anyway.

The honest truth? I was playing Metroid Prime 3. Looking up a walkthrough for assist, then I see a banner add for ME2. Typically, I ignore it - cause who gives a sh!t about pop-ups? I mean really?

Went to the store the next day looking for a new game to play, and I found ME2 on the shelf. I looked at the Cover with Sheploo, Miranda and Thane then thought 'Wow - that human guy's hot' and decided to buy it. And there you go.

I'm not gay but Mark Vanderloo is a good looking man, I can see the apeal, whatever it takes to get into ME. The more the better. Any excuse is a good one for more ME, especially ME2.

Heard it was really good, got it for Christmas, got hooked instantly.

I can't name a single element that got me hooked. I love everything about the series.

At first, not much. I remember playing ME1 for the first time and I wasn't exactly impressed. Some great ideas and the story was interesting, but the relative blandness of the dialogue and combat left me disappointed. I felt there was a lack of dynamic in both elements. I tried playing it a few times more after that, but I didn't get much further than the first visit to the Citadel.

Then came ME2. In hindsight, I really don't know why I picked it up in the first place, given my lack of interest in the first game. Perhaps I just couldn't ignore all the amazing scores the game got from reviews. Weak, I know, but it actually worked out for the best. I absolutely loved ME2, it completely blew me away. It helped that my expectations were low, but still. Like I said, ME1 had some good ideas, and I felt ME2 actually made those ideas work. Now that I look back at the game, I have to say that combat was perhaps a bit too action oriented and the skills were simplified quite a bit. The feel of the game, something very abstract but also very important for me, felt right though. It's as Edge said in their review of the game:

Ultimately, Mass Effect 2’s greatest strength is in tying its disparate pieces together, binding the gunplay and conversation systems into something that meshes, while creating an action-RPG that knows stats should be there, but that they should never get in the way of a good headshot. The result is a game that’s grown into its obvious potential. With the first instalment, BioWare built a universe of words – a deeply convincing multicultural sprawl you could read about without ever quite getting to touch. Here, you’re inside it from the start – and the view is often dazzling.

I was a senior in highschool and this guy I lost my virginity to told me to download the preview to mass effect. I thought it was the coolest thing i had ever seen, and you could also have sex with a dude in it. I. was. down. I bought the game when it released and played it like 3 times in a row when I was in college (thats how long i waited).

I lost my original saves when my first xbox red ringed and made a new gamer tag to drop old weirdos. Long forgotten about that guy who was literally the WORST at getting busy, gained an awesome series to love.

TL;DR- Disregard Virginity, Acquire Virtual Space Boyfriend

I loved the series the moment Shepard said, "Sometimes I wish people would say, 'Sure, we'll join you! No questions asked!'" Heh, I found that moment humorous... I actually don't like sci-fi, for the most part. So, it is still a surprise to me that I like this series.

FemShep. It was love at first playthrough. How she interacts with crew, friends, and others. Her toughness. Her compassion. Her determination. I sooo wanted to be her. [edit: Femsheps voice. my voice is high pitched and girly. I sound 12 and will always sound 12. I've always wanted to sound more mature. I love Jen Hales low voice.]

Story. I love the story established in ME1.

RPG and FPS combination in a futuristic setting.

Music. I love all the music.

My college roommate got the game when it first came out, I wasn't much of a gamer back then. I was mainly busy working on homework while he'd sit there and play the game and occasionally I'd watch him play it. I heard shooting alot when I was doing homework or studying, so I just figured it was your average shooter. But during the times I watched him play I noticed that the highlight wasn't on the shooting, it was on interactions with the characters. I saw that he could make decisions and they effected the outcome of the conversation. This was fascinating to me because of the possibilities. Then it came down to the scene where shepard has an argument with Wrex on Virmire. I guess my roommate decided to go renegade and he killed Wrex. I thought "you could actually kill your friends" from what I saw, I loved the level of control you could have in the game. So I created a seperate file and played the game and fell in love with it.

ME1 - went to a random planet, took a scenic drive around in the Mako and promptly ran into a thresher maw. Epic.

I started with Mass Effect 2. The suicide mission got me hooked. The first time I played the suicide mission was one of the most exciting moments in my video game playing history.

My ex bought it and told me I had to play it; it was just my kind of game and I would definitely love it. And I did. Turned out, in fact, that in the long run I loved it a lot more than I loved him. :P

Well for starters, the whole "RPG, but with guns and in space" thing was very new for me. At the time i had full trust in Bioware and was very intrigued by this new universe.

Then i heard Shepard's voice actor and went crazy: in my country he gave voice to most of the bad guys of my childhood cartoons!
Might sound weird but just hearing him talk was a major driving factor for me.

Other than that.... i don't think there's anything i truly disliked about Mass 1. Except of course the Mako shield recharge.

The choices you could make, the exploration of far flung worlds. The characters you met along the way and learning about the races you encountered.

I think I've answered a similar thread before, but I like Sci-fi in general. I like a lot of thigns, as long as it well made that is.. Anyway, I've played Bioware games before but I wasn't aware of Mass effect until I stunbled on it on a shelf in the store. I bought it for my X-box 360, most of my games are played on the PC but I had bought an x-box to play Halo.. 3 I think it was and maybe some other games, which was a decent game for a shooter, didn't think much about... Anyway, Mass effect, I was surprised to see Biowares name, I usualy think Baldurs gate or similar when it commes to Bioware. But since I like Sci-fi I decided to give it a go, I thought, why not.
The start was, well, it was ok, maybe a little slow but then ti got better and better and I foudn that I liked the universe and setting and the characters grew on me. Then ME1 was released on the PC so I bought it on the PC.
Eventuay ME2 and ME3 would come out and I bought them for the PC as they came out.
If a game can be played on a PC then I prefer playing it on a PC.
I think the endings and end mission of ME3 was uninspired and up until I got to the beam I was thinking ot myself, when is it goign to get interesting... Then shepard got blasted, started limping at slowmotion.. TIM was ok, I guess, but I can't say Iliked the original conversation with the catalyst, it didn't make logical sense and it was dramaticaly lacking. The EC did improve it a little but I still think the ME3 endings were a low point in the series.

I still love the Mass effect universe though. I also hope the Geth will still be part of it in the next game, since they were among the most unique aliens in the game. Well, they and the Rachni.

Download ME2 the demo for the PS3. Played the very first Omega mission. Was hooked. Wait until ME3, finished that, then when the original ME came out, went back to see how it all begins. For me, it's all about the characters and setting. Never seen anything quite like it in all my time playing games.
