I was hooked the moment I saw how much I could customize Shepard. I love me some customization! The story reminded me of Star Wars, so that's a plus too.

After that, my view on RPG games, stories in games and gaming in general changed. Gone from an FPS jockey and Fighting game legend (hurr) to a person who enjoys intelligent video games (Still mashing in Tekken though.)
The story was...the greatest thing I had ever seen in a video game (Gamer since 1998.) It blew me away at how this material was in a video game. And never before had I seen romances incorporated into a video game. It was a next step for me in the world of gaming, I could choose what to say, what to do, I felt seriously immersed. Then after 8 days of playing ME1 and completing it, went straight to the newly released ME2 (Very recent back then, played ME1 in January '10) loved that too.
Waited for ME3...well...you know what happens. First day ME3 released, went to go rent it (Buying video games isn't worth it, renting is much more efficent) finished it and I felt slightly disappointed. Then I went online...
The internet got me more winded up than the game itself. Bioware will never recover from this blow.

In ME1? Story, characters, especially Ashley and Garrus. And Shepard too, since it was "my" Shepard. Overall, I liked that game and I couldn't wait for ME2. Did I mention it was Ash that totally got me?
ME2? Characters, mostly characters. The story was okay, but you were distracted from it for too long.
ME3? Lack of characters. Old characters got the short end of the stick, characters of ME2 got ignored. The story was decent until Thessia - then it went south. I dunno why, but ME3 feels like the weakest part, despite coming with the most perfect combat & upgrade systems in the trilogy. Well, maybe I'm too much of a RP person now.

Didn't really come through on what I expected, but it's a clever enough pastiche that it held my interest anyway.

Went to the store the next day looking for a new game to play, and I found ME2 on the shelf. I looked at the Cover with Sheploo, Miranda and Thane then thought 'Wow - that human guy's hot' and decided to buy it. And there you go.

The honest truth? I was playing Metroid Prime 3. Looking up a walkthrough for assist, then I see a banner add for ME2. Typically, I ignore it - cause who gives a sh!t about pop-ups? I mean really?

I'm not gay but Mark Vanderloo is a good looking man, I can see the apeal, whatever it takes to get into ME. The more the better. Any excuse is a good one for more ME, especially ME2.

I can't name a single element that got me hooked. I love everything about the series.

Then came ME2. In hindsight, I really don't know why I picked it up in the first place, given my lack of interest in the first game. Perhaps I just couldn't ignore all the amazing scores the game got from reviews. Weak, I know, but it actually worked out for the best. I absolutely loved ME2, it completely blew me away. It helped that my expectations were low, but still. Like I said, ME1 had some good ideas, and I felt ME2 actually made those ideas work. Now that I look back at the game, I have to say that combat was perhaps a bit too action oriented and the skills were simplified quite a bit. The feel of the game, something very abstract but also very important for me, felt right though. It's as Edge said in their review of the game:
Ultimately, Mass Effect 2’s greatest strength is in tying its disparate pieces together, binding the gunplay and conversation systems into something that meshes, while creating an action-RPG that knows stats should be there, but that they should never get in the way of a good headshot. The result is a game that’s grown into its obvious potential. With the first instalment, BioWare built a universe of words – a deeply convincing multicultural sprawl you could read about without ever quite getting to touch. Here, you’re inside it from the start – and the view is often dazzling.

I lost my original saves when my first xbox red ringed and made a new gamer tag to drop old weirdos. Long forgotten about that guy who was literally the WORST at getting busy, gained an awesome series to love.
TL;DR- Disregard Virginity, Acquire Virtual Space Boyfriend

That's the most beautiful love story I've ever heard.Sashimi_taco wrote...
I was a senior in highschool and this guy I lost my virginity to told me to download the preview to mass effect. I thought it was the coolest thing i had ever seen, and you could also have sex with a dude in it. I. was. down. I bought the game when it released and played it like 3 times in a row when I was in college (thats how long i waited).

Then i heard Shepard's voice actor and went crazy: in my country he gave voice to most of the bad guys of my childhood cartoons!
Might sound weird but just hearing him talk was a major driving factor for me.
Other than that.... i don't think there's anything i truly disliked about Mass 1. Except of course the Mako shield recharge.

The start was, well, it was ok, maybe a little slow but then ti got better and better and I foudn that I liked the universe and setting and the characters grew on me. Then ME1 was released on the PC so I bought it on the PC.
Eventuay ME2 and ME3 would come out and I bought them for the PC as they came out.
If a game can be played on a PC then I prefer playing it on a PC.
I think the endings and end mission of ME3 was uninspired and up until I got to the beam I was thinking ot myself, when is it goign to get interesting... Then shepard got blasted, started limping at slowmotion.. TIM was ok, I guess, but I can't say Iliked the original conversation with the catalyst, it didn't make logical sense and it was dramaticaly lacking. The EC did improve it a little but I still think the ME3 endings were a low point in the series.
I still love the Mass effect universe though. I also hope the Geth will still be part of it in the next game, since they were among the most unique aliens in the game. Well, they and the Rachni.
