I played Mass Effect because it was Bioware's latest game. I had played Neverwinter Nights (and all it's expansions), Knights of the Old Republic, and Jade Empire loving all three. But the question was what hooked me on Mass Effect...

....This guy right here:

Also I liked the first Mass Effect, enjoying the setting, etc but didn't really fall in love with the series until ME2. Call me crazy.

It was the richer than normal story of my usual games, and the good combat of Me2, that got me interested in Me as a whole. Decided to check out Me1 after that, and than bought the books and some comics.

I was in Gamestation the special edition on sale for £5, bought it, loved it went back and bought ME2 preowned two days later. No online pass so went back and paid £10 more for retail edition. Over £100 later with 3 and all the DLC I'm now attempting DA:Origins.

My grandma asked me what game I wanted for christmas. I didn't know what to get because there wasn't anything I was excited for. I ended up asking for Mass Effect and just loved it.

Aside from KOTOR I never played a game that had such deep characters and so much lore to learn about. Think I replayed it a few times just because I wanted to learn more about the story and read the codex.

Mass Effect was the first RPG I really invested myself in since FF7.

What hooked me onto Mass Effect? When I started up ME1 and "Vigil" played.

What hooked me? Hmm something that is completely absent in the sequels....

Probably because that guy right there doesn't really become a great character until ME2.

This was the first screenshot I ever saw of Mass Effect:

It was also the first time I heard of this game. From that moment on, I was in.

Heh, probably. I think it also had to do with the crappy combat system in ME1, too.

The Mako!

partial credit to you sir....

Exploring many worlds (via the Mako). Yes, some of them were bland. The outposts were "cookie-cutter" for the most part....but, this feature added something to the game's atmosphere and immersion. It made me feel like I was but one individual in a massive galaxy. It demonstrated the vastness of space. In a word, it gave me that sense of "wonder". Something lost on the sequels as we ran through corridor after corridor.

No, its because Garrus was a medigel fiend in ME1. He was easily the weakest character to go into battle with. The dude is laying on the ground more than he stands on his feet throughout the duration of ME1 lol (BW remedied this in ME2 and 3, where he's a straight up boss.)

I'm of the same mind as McFly. That first drop onto an alien planet with a hostile environment set the hook deep. But the music, and the atmosphere, and and just ALL the stuff that you could do and places you could go and people you could meet. It was amazing.

For me, it was the warning on Ilos. "All is lost... Cannot be stopped... Cannot be stopped."

From that moment on, I wanted to know what the Reapers were and stop them, but then ME3 and it's God child happened.. and well.. gah.

The characters and the setting, which are imho miles above the majority of sci-fi games right now.

I was in a Gamestation in Southampton after going on a short cruise with my girlfriend/fiancee (proposed in Bruges by the Lake of Love...oh yes) who is now my wife. Because I had uber tons of brownie points for proposing in a romantic continental setting, anything i said, did, wanted was golden.

In this Gamestation, I wanted to grab a couple of games, so i splurged on GTA:IV and Mass Effect. I got home, and started playing GTA:IV almost immediately...

About 2 months later I realised I'd bought ME, i thought I'd give it a shot and my mind was blown. Everything from Joker to the music to the exploration to the Thesher Maws to Saren to Ilos to Feros to the Citadel to the characters to the jokes to the gun-lay, biotics and tech skills...i was hooked. Still am, just completed another ME1 playthrough last night and am gonna start up a ME2 playthrough tonight when i get home from work. :)

You misunderstood. I was just making a blanket statement that the crappy combat system in ME1 is part of the reason why I like ME2 better. Although, I've never had a problem with Garrus dying in ME1, well no more than any other companion that is. I don't know maybe because I take Garrus with me everywhere and he ends up with all the best euipment I can give him?

You have to admit though that companion AI in ME1 (and a lesser extent in ME2) is terrible.

I got Mass Effect 1 along with my Xbox back in 2009 along with my Xbox but I didn't start playing it till 2011, I must have sucked because I finished Liara's Dig Site mission first instead of Virmire or Feros and by the time I finished that mission, I had enough with the Mako and gameplay and just gave up. I got Mass Effect 2 around this times as I found it cheap on a website but I didn't plan to play it before Mass Effect 1. Then in 2012 I kind of wanted to rush through Mass Effect 1 because I had bad memories of it but heard great things about Mass Effect 2 and 3 also. I ended up enjoying Mass Effect 1, despite it flaws. I loved Wrex and Tali (led me to choose her as my LI in the next game) in that game and always took them for missions. The atmosphere, Citadel and main missions were great but I really hated the Mako, gameplay and repetitive side missions. Doing replays I actually don't mind the gameplay anymore, but I still hate the gameplay. I guess Mass Effect 2 hooked me mostly to the story from the start, but Mass Effect 1 must have from some degree because as soon as I finished it I imported my save straight into Mass Effect 2. I finished both Mass Effect 1 (only Liara's dig site completed before this) and all of Mass Effect 2 in the month of the July, and then got Mass Effect 3 for my birthday. Great times.

Dopamine did.

As for what it was about the game that got me hooked, I'd say it was damn near everything.
