Carrie Ann Moss as Aria.

I started with ME2, and went back and did ME1 after finishing ME2 and wondering what all I missed with the Ashley/Kaiden thing.

But when Aria stands up and says "I am Omega", I was hooked.

If I had started with ME1, I'm not sure I would have finished because of those damn elevators.

I am a sucker for space opera, so I was in as soon as I heard 1.Bioware 2.Scifi 3.Epic. What sealed the deal for me was the glorious music as you address your crew for the first time, not to mention that initial shot of you staring out the window as Anderson, Udina and Hackett discuss your history. I still get chills down my spine.

I have to say that the music is a major draw for most of us.  They did such a good job getting music "right" to fit every situation.  Starting each game off with such a sweeping musical score was brilliantly done.

You absolutely should go to Therum and pick up Liara before going to Feros or Virmire....why would that imply you sucked? Considering Feros is an ancient Prothean world, I find it a no brainer to pick her up and then go straight there. Then its on to Noveria to confront her mother. And then finally doing Virmire last because it seems to be the Climax of the Campaign before going to Ilos. Idk....I think doing Virmire before Noveria or Liara's recruitment is quite anti-climactic.

Granted, the game allows you to play them in any order.....but imo you did it the right way by picking up the Dr before doing any of the campaign missions.

After becoming a Spectre I always go straight to Therum to pick up Liara. Then Feros, Noveria and finally Virmire (in that order). It just seems the narrative was meant to play out that way.

The entire first scene of the game, when you're walking through the Normandy to the bridge with the music playing and you see your Shepard for the first time.

Then the first trip to the Citadel. Then becoming a spectre, then pretty much the entirety of ME1.

Glad I had the Xbox and then the PC version. Had I started with ME2, I don't know.

I loved the seamlessness of the universe in the first game. If you wanted to get somewhere, you had to fly there, drive there, ride the lift and when you get on the Normandy, you have to be decontaminated; nothing was left out. Admittedly, some of these elements became tedious but the overall effect was brilliant.

What got my initial attention? Not gonna bullsht you: the sex scenes. I wanted to see if Bioware was so ballsy as to actually put one in a game. Ironically, never seen a single one; not even Youtube.  Immediately stopped caring.  Story was so enjoyable that I completely forgot about what I had originally come to see

Video games were losing their appeal to me.  Hadn't had a game hook me really in atleast a few years.  Decided to do some research and found ME2 at the top of a list for best games of 2010.  Went in to the VG store fully expecting to buy ME1, but ME2 was $10 cheaper so I said what the heck, I'll start with #2.

To speak honestly, I wasn't really hooked on the game at first.  I thought the gameplay was mediocre.  But once the story really started getting ahold of me (about 5 hours or so in), I was done for.

The characters mostly. Mass Effect 2 got me committed to the series. The entire conceit behind that game of getting together a group of badasses with baggage for a suicide mission was just really cool. The fact that the crew was such an outstanding ensemble cast sealed the deal.

There's definitely no right or wrong order to do the missions in, but I always do Virmire after Therum/Noveria/Feros.

However your point about having to get Liara first is alright, but it's funnier if you leave her to wait for you. She goes a bit loopy and starts hallucinating! Image IPB

If you go to Therum last, Liara would go a little crazy, may be because she was being trapped the whole time while you doing other main missions. It's funny, however you won't be able to romance her. So if you 1/ want a powerful biotic in your squad or 2/ want to romance Liara, it's best to go to Therum and recruit her first.
Anyhow, why I got hooked to ME? BioWare!!!!!
Well I've been a huge fan of BioWare for quite awhile (loved Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Night 1, Jade Empire, KOTR, and Dragon Age: Origins). Always love their games' stories, the ability of creating amazing characters, and the way your choice actually affect the game's story. BioWare is really at the top of the list on these fields. When I first heard about ME back in late 2007, I desperately wanna try it. But believe it or not, I didn't have what you might call a decent enough computer / laptop to play it at that time. It was until early 2009 that I got to finally played ME1, and instantly fell in love with it. They did awesome job mixing third person shooter with rpgs. And they still kept their strongest points: Story and deep characters. Until today, I still played ME 1 sometimes (whenever I wanna start a new whole trilogy run). Pretty much my all time fav franchise lol And I'm not even a sci-fi fans xD

Replayability and characters.

The replayability came from the amount of choices and different routes one could take. Sadly, by funneling Shepard towards a 1 out of 3 choice and then certain death - annihilated it completely.

Well it's more that she think's she's hallucinating when she see's you and your team for the first time, you know when she's trapped in the prothean bubble. But from what she says, it's clear that she has been hallucinating previously, and refuses to believe that you're real until you bore through with the mining laser and free her. Good scene.

ME1 was one of the very rare sci-fi RPGs. That's why I picked it up. I liked it well enough to play it several times before ME2 came out, but I wasn't really a fan. That began with a single character who didn't just have a compelling personality, but represented interesting sci-fi themes as well: Miranda Lawson. That there was no follow-up on those themes is still one of my major disappointments, and the main reason why I dislike the content of most of ME3's character interaction scenes is because the themes characters represent are too often ignored, not just in Miranda's case.

So in the end I was drawn in by ME2's depth of character interaction. ME3 replaced quality with quantity in all but a handful of cases, which I consider a significant loss.

There was a hot guy on the front cover of ME2. Then I got yelled at by all these random characters and I wonderde who the hell are these guys? So I went back to buy ME1, created a Sheploo Infiltrator and fell in love with the universe.

I was an mmo player, gw1, wow. But got so fed up of lack of I don't know...immersion? I could make a character and delete it 10 levels down the line with no sense of connection to the character, it was so superficial.
I had heard of dragon age, the title(nothing more) and saw the cover and thought it was just another martial arts game and ignored it, but saw my son playing it and I got hooked. I loved the story telling, the depth of character creation and development and what I had wanted all along was a chance to get to know the team I was working with. after playing that for a while I wanted something else and saw ME was also bioware so gave it a shot, I wasn't dissapointed.

Back in 2007 there was an article about ME1 in a gaming magazine. I never heard about BioWare or Mass Effect before.
It has praised the game to establish a giant new universe and to feature very believable characters, comparable to "virtual actors". That it offers role-playing even up to the point that you could get romantically involved with one of the characters. Next day I bought it. Have always been looking for such a game.
