But with the changes to fire explosions i got to say Inferno Grenades is where its at. They're powerful, blankets multiple enemies, have no cool down, and sets up those wonderful fire explosions. Great for an aggressive playstyle. Inferno Vanguards are a lot of fun.

I liked Slam and always took it for my Vanguard in ME2. In 3 I don't like it as much. I usually take Slam, Incendiary Grenade or Barrier (I know Fortification reduces damage more but Barrier goes with Biotics). I wish Warp was available as a bonus power.

Max level slam would be my first recommendation. Cool down becomes minuscule at higher levels to the point where you can RECAST slam before the animation of the PREVIOUS slam is finished for insane double slams! Another good choice would be reave for the damage reduction, or dark channel for the reasons discussed earlier. Inferno grenade I haven't really used due to its abismal DPS in ME2, but it seems like a good fit for a class without a consumable grenade power.
I personally wouldn't recommend the defensive powers like barrier, as a nova-guard you should be charging whenever it's off cool down to get that instant shield regen. If you're dying as the nova-guard, you're probably not charging enough.

I went with Energy Drain as a way to deal with shields when it's not safe to charge in. Dark Channel seems like it would work very well with Charge and Nova.
