I personally like reave on my novaguard. Extra damage protection is nice for those brief periods of time I don't have my barrier up after using nova (especially on higher difficulties), and it does this without the increased cooldown times on all of your other powers that barrier and fortification cause.

Incendiary ammo is better.

reave is the best. go for damage reduction & radius.hit 2 or 3 enemies with it,
then charge for 1 bioplosion then nova for the second. mowes down everything.

I'm starting a play through using Dark Channel. Though just wondering can Reave recharge HP?

Unlike Reave in Mass Effect 2, Reave in Mass Effect 3 cannot recharge health. Reave does add damage protection; basically it decreases the amount of damage enemies inflict on you. Reave can also set up and detonate biotic explosions.

Been using Inferno Grenades on my current playthrough. Very good choice, in my opinion. Reave is good as well.

Well I'm back from playing  a Vanguard with Dark Channel. As cool as it was, it isn't my style. As effective as Reave is, something tells me I'll have more fun with with a Lashing Vanguard. I have squad to help me out with priming explosions.

On my insanity run I went with barrier and it was life saving adding 50% DP. If you're looking for something to make it easier or cooler, I'd go with something you can detonate. Inferno grenade and reave would be good options, with IG being more visually satisfying.

In SP I found that using Charge->Nova was way too cheap and made Insanity trivial. I liked ME2 style of Charge->Claymore-> and rely on defense and smart positioning to play. Makes the gameplay more rewarding.

Use any of the Shield Powers or maybe Carnage/IGs for Fire Explosions.

Insanity vanguard run should use barrier as bonus power then customize your arsenal so you have 150 percent recharge. Spam charge- nova's cool and all- but on insanity it get dicey.

Bring liara or javik for biotic explosions and James so you can blow stuff up. Carnage plus charge= fun times.

The vanguard is one of the most versatile classes in ME3 cause your a CQC beast, but also a soldier and also a poweful biotic. I rolled this loadout for My ME3 insanity vanguard playthrough that I just completed last weekend:

N7 piranha X- dammage mod and light materials (citadel DLC mod)
M-90 indra X enhanced scope, light weight materials
Blood pack SMG X light weight materials, thermal clip mods

With this load-out I have 172 percent recharge. I'm lethal at any range. And when paired with Inferno Armor- massive power damage and recharge boost I can spam the sh!t outta my biotics.

But the real kicker is Barrier, specked out to max damage reduction. Now not only are you a CQC beast, lethal long range killer (indra, 3rd highest DPS sniper rifle in the game), slayer of armor (Blood pack SMG melts armor- even without ammo boost- and VG got incendiary ammo). But your literally a tank with barrier.

Nasty.

Reave gives you DR AND primes explosions, better than just fortification or defense matrix.

I went with Energy Drain as a way to deal with shields when it's not safe to charge in. Dark Channel seems like it would work very well with Charge and Nova.

Dark Channel is a good choice for any class.

Shame it breaks the lore so much. I'm considering using on my soldier, just because i can't aim proxy mine for **** and a power that drains the life from an enemy sounds like a great fit for a renegade shepard.

For Proximity Mine, you do not have to hit the enemy, just aim it at the enemy's feet. It is a fairly low-damage power, so choose Radius at rank 4. Just aim it towards the floor by the enemy's feet and it will explode as soon it hits the floor.

To be honest, I only really use the charge/nova combo when fighting a big enemy (banshee, brute, atlas, ravager); any other enemies, I tend to charge into close range, then use my Disciple to take the enemies down, using an occasional charge to recharge my shield when they finally get through it. I do agree with charge/nova being completely cheap, but it definitely makes dealing with those big enemies less painful.

For my Insanity Vanguard run, I used Fortification specced for power damage and recharge time. Dabbled in Reave and Dark Channel, but the former was too dangerous to use as more than a calling card, and enemy grouping rarely worked in the latter's favor. One doesn't miss easy biotic explosions quite so much when one is setting off fire explosions like Michael Bay.

You make a fair point. The only Shepard where I have beaten mirror match on insanity is Reaveguard Shepard.
Infiltrator kept getting downed by mirror vanguard.:crying: At least reave guard managed to charge nova the mirror foe to oblivion. Furthermore the reave guard had some damage protection every time she spammed reave.:wizard:

As long as u don't disable ammo, u can pretty much spam Inferno Grenades in the Mirror match with an Infernoguard. That how i did it, teamed up with Wrex and Grunt.

I'm having fun with a Vanguard with Lash as a bonus power. It's crazzy fun pulling enemies with close enough for Nova into a Biotic Explosion.

Speaking of Vanguard builds, I'm surprised no one mentioned the idea of a Carbine Vanguard.

I use flare. It's power is ridiculous, it's recharge time might be a little off putting. But if you rock the spirit armor you acquire from citedel DLC and all of Glyph's upgrades you're looking at about a 3 sec recharge time. The charge power damage multiplier will make this move even stronger. My combo: charge, nova, flare and repeat. You'll be an unstoppable force.

Energy drain is almost always a winner for me-- getting your own shield/barrier back while stripping it off of enemies, stunning mooks in the process? What's not to like. It even stuns the armoured CAT6 heavies in the Citadel DLC right through their stupid omni-shields. And if you evolve it for the 40% DR for 10 seconds, it means you have that much more of a buffer at the business end of your charge against the enemies you just ED'ed. It's just a great all-round little ability.

Does nova trigger fire explosions? I'm thinking of going with a chargeless vanguard and have incendiary ammo as my bonus power.
