I'll go on a limb and say they aren't popular because everyone else cares about others' signature images but because everyone cares about their own signature images. They think it's neat and want to show the world but don't ask the world if it wants to see. That's what I meant by nobody caring. It's not so much that I dislike seeing them or find them inherently ugly, I'm simply annoyed with the effect (I think) they have on the forums.

And I'll stress that it's not signatures but (signature) images. Bad colours can be just as bothersome but I find that there is more of an argument to made for allowing text colours than images.

I have to say I completely agree with what you are saying Snoteye.  Throughout many different forums (anywhere from cars, guns, to video games) I have been on, I very rarely care much about the colorful images or 'detailed' signatures.  I think it is a lot more about the person just liking there own signature so much (I have to admit I used to do that years ago.  I would sit and look at my own signature in a thread..sigh) rather than actually looking at other peoples.  I think it should maybe be limited to your own profile, so that when others look at your profile out of curiosity, they may see your great artwork and more detailed signature there.  This would remove it from being replicated over and over again inside a thread.

My biggest complaint about it is that it really distracts my eyes as they scroll through a post to continue reading the important stuff and the reason I even clicked on the thread that I did.  I didn't click on the subject because I wanted to see 20 colorful signatures.  I wanted to read the information inside and it becomes a chore at times, which is counter-productive and counter-intuitive for a forum of information.

Regards

The site's absolutely brand-new (and in beta), so any functionality will likely be evaluated and kept/changed/disabled/added as needed.

Check out the web site help forum to give feedback (read the sticky on how once you're there).

I don't totally disagree with any of this, except that for the sentiment that it is purely selfish, any more than ANY art is selfish.  Sure I like making them, but I also appreciate seeing the ones others makes.  It also makes it easy to pick out regular forum posters.

I guess I just have gotten use to them seeing them on every site I got to.

However since they do not seem to be common right now I will settle for text.

[EDIT - removed snarky comment.  But I am a little irritated that my enthusiasm got rained on, as I am pretty hyped and excited about this game and was having a lot of fun playing around with graphics and this new site.  Plus I feel like it was being implied people who posts signatures are just being narcisstic about their artwork.  People can actually enjoy sharing art and appreciate others arts without doing it for their own viewing pleasure.  I can just make it my wallpaper if that is all I want to do.

But I didn't really mean to get so worked up over it.  My last point, before I let it vanish into the virtual ether for now, is just one statement on this:

which is counter-productive and counter-intuitive for a forum of information.

Some of this forum is information, perhaps all.  But I think a case could at least be debated that some of the forum is purely for social purposes and the sharing of things besides just text - such as fan art, graphics, etc.  Of course you can just make threads purely for that type of thing - I am very aware of that.  Just pointing out this isn't some high-brow educational research site, at least that is not my impression.  It seems to have some laid back fun and social aspects to it as well, or at least some parts of it.

Speaking of signatures, I decided to resurrect my old signature from the Bioware forums.

It's just that good.

I think sig tags are okay, so long as they are sensible and rather small. It would be neat if we could come to some kind of consensus on a general design for them, then start an unofficial official trend with them. That way, people wanting character sigs or whatnot could just use the existing template or follow the size/type of tag.

Random thought.

It's a picture of the thread starter. If you click on the link to his album, its there with the signatures.

I didn't just randomly pluck some dude off the interwebs.

I like Sig tags..when they aren't 300x300 images like you see in a lot of places..the 50 px limit is a bit restricting..but it keeps things small so people don't get annoyed. I made one that was about 85px high before I knew of the restriction..so ended up with the below.

I do like Devija's "trend" idea..he he =)

Hai gais, I made this one.

Took a lot of work, like an hour tops, added a lens flare for professionalism.

... Alright, yeah, I don't know who I am parodying here, but I think this should serve as a warning on how not to do it.

Personally, I think small signatures are just fine.

Especially considering that posts will generally fall into one of two categories:

A. So small that the signature doesn't take up any extra space on the page (because the postbit is setting the minimum size), or

B. Large enough that the size of the signature is fairly insignificant by comparison.

Hey all thanks for the support. I do agree 100% small and tasteful is good. Of course "tasteful" is relative which I think is where some debate comes in as well. However it is relative and hence you need to take the good with the bad - since "good" and "bad" is just relative to the person.

On the other hand I also respect other peoples opinions and wishes and, as you can see from my posts, I also see the point of the "no image in sig" posters. I am only leaning towards it primarily because this *IS* a social site, not some research site.

I removed mine until I see what the trend is. If they become more common I will put mine back. While sometimes I like to buck the system and go the opposite way, I am not here to offend others by any means! I just want to enjoy the site so will go with what the general consensus on using signatures seems to be.

(oh and *blush* I was posting that picture partly because of a thread I am in where you try to create a character that mimics what you look like in real life. I thought one in my Renn Faire outfit would work well as a starter. I forgot I had linked to my album in this thread lol - but thanks for the humourous and nice comments.)

And I really like your sig - I like how the artwork was done in that, and the "choose" one of the three core classes I assume.  Did you draw that or was that from some concept art?

Thanks! I forgot to add in my post I liked the dark one of yours better....red was too much.

It's the concept art for Alistair, Morigan and Leliana.  I just did some editing and color manip..fairly basic stuff.  I wanted to put all the party members on there but all the concept art wouldn't mesh..those three were the same type art.    The idea was which companions you would choose though not which class :)

Thanks again!

I love sigs, but I dabble a lot in photoshop too and love 2d art... :P I am always a little sad if forums don't allow graphical sigs. I think what we have in this forum is great, you're only allowed a small signature and it makes for tasteful and deliberate design.

Made a sig of my own... but it feels... empty. I need to add stuff to it. Or who knows, maybe I'll just take away the pic of my PC and just have a Morrigan sig.

Yours is actually the first sig I saw, that made me create one.  Before that didn't realize they had the [img] tag enabled for sigs.  Yours is nice and clean.. =)  I agree with the allowed size..it (mostly) protects from the grotesque sigs..hehe.

Yeah...if you don't have anything to put in there I suggest that you make the width much smaller..open space doesn't work well in a graphical composition (more specifically a signature)

You used the same Morigan concept art as I, but I manip'd it a bit to make it look..uh...better :)
I wanted to put my avatar in my sig but decided against it..since it's already on the left..didn't want overkill..and liked the "Friends/Companions" theme I chose instead.

When you remake it, I'd be glad to see it! I love looking at sigs.
