Anyone recommend the Kindle Fire hd? I want one, but the price is off-putting. I don't want a second hand Kindle.

Depends what you're planning on doing with it and tbh you should wait a bit, there's a new range of tablets on their way. And you might want to look into Windows tablets, they're about the same price as iPad but pretty good
I'm planning on using it to read, organisation for university, watch films and surf the web. But use it as a portable source of entertainment when travelling as my uni is a good 2 and half hours away train journey. Also the idea of a portable solar charger is cool.
I don't know much about tablets unfortuntately, I really like the design of the Kindle Fire. It's sleek black design makes it look smart. Black and Orange make a great tone as well.
What do you mean by new range of tablets?

The Kindle might be better if you plan on heavily using Amazon services specifically, otherwise I can't see a good reason to go with the Kindle. Even with Amazon services, you can use stuff like Kindle apps just as well, in vanilla Android or iPad. It's only really their streaming video that you miss out on, I believe.

I know this wasn't one of your choices, but I might also recommend the Nexus 7 if you're looking at the Fire HD in terms of the price and screen size. I had a Nexus 7 and loved it, until I traded it for a Nexus 10.

Well it's for price reasons as well as the ones I posted previously.
I won't do much but use ti for entertainment reasons and possibly organisation. Just chilling in the living rooms with my room mates and for cheap books to read, don't want to carry my LoTR trilogy in my bags and other favourite books, too much weight.
What streaming videos? Is it a free service and watch tv shows?

On the whole I'm pretty pleased with it, and don't envision replacing it for a few years (although the Nexus 10 sorely tempted me - dat sexy resolution).

And ibooks is alright, on par with kindle, but an iPad is a bit expensive and kinda lacks functionality for that price. However, I don't like using credit cards online, so buying iTunes cards are a neat feature Remember at uni your supposed to buy some form of tv license if you plan on watching live tv.
What about using TV Links? That's how I watch The Walking Dead when the US shows it.

Streaming video is part of their Amazon Prime service which has a yearly subscription fee. It can apparently be accessed on virtually every platform (PC, iPad, Fire HD, xbox, wii, roku) EXCEPT vanilla Android (Nexus 7, most generic tablets).Naughty Bear wrote...

I think Kindle owners get free monthly book rentals from Amazon. Other than that the Kindle seems to me to just be a more closed off tablet without great advantages. Has nice screen quality, but so do iPad and Nexus. Though, from what you described, having the system be closed off may not really be much of a concern for you.
To be honest it's probably not much of a concern for me either, but, it's a matter of perception maybe.

I think it runs about $200 new, which is pretty good.

The touch screen is better, more responsive. More memory, and a better all around device. It just does more than the Kindle fire. But these tablets get so many updates. The newest kindles may have improved.
