I was really impressed. The combat and gameplay mechanics were solid, if unremarkable, but the writing, dialogue options, atmosphere, and characters were excellent. This was the first Bioware title I've played, and I'm really looking forward to ME 2 and ME 3. I'm hoping the ending isn't terrible. Does anybody have any suggestions for DLC or things I should do over my playthrough? Thanks.

Don't worry about the ending.

Be sure to buy/play Bring Down the Sky for ME1.

Mass effect 1 is indeed awesome - Mass effect 2 is also very good, though it is different, and I think that ME1 got the atmosphere better. ME2's combat action is more fast-paced, with better combat mechanics. But somehow that ME1 atmosphere isn't recaptured in either of the sequels.

Mass effect 3.... well, I'd say that it's a good one-play-trhough experience, with both highs and lows. The very lowest point being the ending, of course. With a proper, well written ending, it could have been a GREAT one-play-through experience. Regardless of the ending, I think ME3 has the lowest replay value of the three games.

I think the "Extended Edition" managed to address some of the complaints people had with the ending, but it didn't do anything really to address the issues I had with it. It is still, in my book, the worst ending to a video game I've had the misfortune to experience, and the worst writing to have come out of Bioware.

Played trhough both ME1 and 2 several times, and might do so again some time in the future, but I still can't work up an interest to load up ME3 again.

If this was your first Bioware title, I'd recommend looking into some of their other, older titles too; Dragon Age: Origins is, I think, almost as good as the game that made me a fan of BIoware; Baldur's Gate 2 - the game I still measure other games against.

Like I said earlier, don't worry about the ending beforehand.

This one game journalist talked about how knowledge of Spec Ops' most controversial scene spoiled his reaction to it. Instead of having his own emotional reaction, he thought, "Oh, this is the scene everyone was talking about." (Link to full article if you care: http://games.on.net/...uining-the-fun/)

So, play it as you would. When you get to the ending, you can get your own reaction (good or bad). If you worry too much ahead of time, then you will be: "Oh, this is the bad ending everyone is talking about."

Thanks for the replies. I got the trilogy, so I'll be playing the next 2 soon. I'll try to avoid spoilers, and I'll form my own opinion on the ending. I did encounter a spoiler that I'm hoping is an avoidable event, like Wrex's death. (I heard Tali committed suicide. Say it ain't so!) I'll check out that article definitely. I played Bring Down the Sky and really enjoyed it. Are there any other DLC's I should download for ME2 and ME3?

My suggestions for DLC: (IF YOU HAVE THE PS3 VERSION, SKIP TO MY NEXT POST FIRST)

Mass Effect 2 DLC (MUST HAVES)
  • Download the patch, as it makes planet scanning (the grinding part of the game and replacement for the Mako missions) a lot easier
  • Cerberus Network (Free): if you bought the game new, then you got a code for this. It is a package set of DLC, most of it little stuff like weapons (Cerberus armor, shotgun, and arc projector), a couple vehicle missions (Firewalker), and a sentimental short mission (Crash Site). Most of this is not that important, but the biggest and best part of this DLC bundle is Zaeed, a new mission and squadmember (who also briefly shows up in ME3 a couple times). So, if you got the game new, download the pack since it's FREE.
  • Lair of the Shadow Broker ($10): considered the best or second-best DLC BioWare has ever produced (the other being ME3: Citadel). Awesome missions, the return of Liara, referenced in ME3, Shadow Broker goodness. If you only had money to buy just one DLC for Mass Effect 2, this would be it.
Mass Effect 2 DLC (IF YOU LIKE THE DESCRIPTION)
  • Arrival ($7): Shepard goes on a solo mission to stop the Reapers. Kind of dull combat, but has very good music and is an important bridge between ME2 & ME3 lore wise.
  • Kasumi: Stolen Memory ($7): new squadmate (human female, infiltrator/thief, pretty cool) and new mission (pretty cool). Kind of like Zaeed DLC, but it costs money. She shows up briefly in ME3 a couple times.
  • Overlord ($7): a horror-themed mission. Really good story and has a really good tie-in in ME3.
  • Firepower Pack ($2): instantly gives you three overpowered and awesome weapons. If you like that sort of thing.
There are some other DLC, but they are minor stuff like costumes for squadmates and armor for Shepard. Only buy if you are a die hard fan. (Alternate Appearance Pack #1 & 2, Aegis Pack, Equalizer Pack)

Mass Effect 3 DLC (MUST HAVES)
  • Extended Cut (Free): expanded ending to help satisfy fans. Download since it's FREE.
  • Citadel ($15): considered the best or second-best DLC BioWare has ever made (the other being Lair of the Shadow Broker). A very funny series of missions and considered very good fan service. This is a long DLC (6 hours average) and the second half is where Shepard hosts a party for his or her's squadmates (even the DLC ones like Zaeed & Kasumi). Recommened to play near the end of the game for maximum tears. Very funny and touching. If had to buy only one DLC for ME3, get this one.
Mass Effect 3 DLC (IF YOU LIKE THE DESCRIPTION)
  • Leviathan ($10): good series of mission focused on lore and it makes more sense of the ending (reveals the Reapers' origins in full).
  • From Ashes ($10): similar to Zaeed & Kasumi DLCs in ME2, you get a new squadmate and a mission to recruit him. This is a must have only if you love the universe and lore because the squadmate is a real live Prothean. He is very Renegade, but if you like that, you will like him. To get your money's worth, bring him as much as you can, especially during the mission Priority: Thessia. (He also shows up in the party in the Citadel DLC.)
  • Fightfight Pack ($2): if you like the combat and want more (very good) weapons to play with (like the Cerberus Harrier), buy this.
  • Groundside Resistance Pack ($2): if you like the combat and want more (very good) weapons to play with, buy this.
  • Resurgence, Rebellion, Earth, Retaliation, & Reckoning (Free): these are free updates to Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer. So if you like multiplayer, download all of these. If you don't like the MP, then save the hard drive space.
There is a couple other DLCs, like a series of missions to retake Omega called Omega. It is a tad expensive at $15 and is mostly combat and kinda dull. Only buy if you are a big Aria fan (you will get to meet her in ME2) or a big Mass Effect fan. There is also one DLC at $2 for more clothes for your squadmates (Alternate Appearance Pack). Only buy if you really want a couple more outfits for your squadmates, otherwise it's not really worth it.

UPDATE: IF YOU HAVE THE PS3 VERSION

All of my advice for Mass Effect 3 stands, but if you have the PS3 version of Mass Effect 2, then the DLCs Lair of the Shadow Broker, Overlord, & Kasumi: Stolen Memory are all ON the DISC already. Lucky you, you don't have to spend the extra money. In that case, I highly recommend you to buy Arrival because it sets up ME3. If you are a completionist, buy the N7 Complete Arnsenal Bundle to get you all of the extra weapons, outfits, and other little stuff in one pack for $8 (it's just missing Alternate Appearance Pack 2 which you can buy if you're into squadmate outfits) but it isn't that necessary.

^ Nice post.

@OP, don't worry about those spoilers. What happens will depend on your choices. If you try to complete all the missions available (including side missions), you should have a choice on how to proceed.

My suggestions for DLC: [*]

I'll definitely check out Citadel, Leviathan, and From Ashes. I'd like to pick up Kasumi's DLC also. I got the PS3 trilogy, so Shadow Broker and Zaeed are already there. I appreciate you taking the time to give me the complete rundown of DLC.

Happy to help. If you got the PS3 version, Kasumi should be on disc.
