Through the trilogy we met a few characters that cried. The engine can do it. Its not perfect but easy to recognize ... and it looks pretty convincing.

I recently played a Femshep who romanced Thane in ME2 through the Citadel DLC and ended up with his four video messages. My heart sank a little with each message I watched and as I reached the fourth message, even Shepard started crying.

It was a very strong emotional moment but it left me thinking ... I don't remember any other scenes where Shepard actually sheds tears. This is a unique occurrence, isn't it?

I didn't encounter any other scenes where Shepard would have let 1 minute of sleep over (/sarcasm off).
It would have been nice if Shepard actually cried more depending on background and renegade/paragon decisions. E.g. Paragon Shepard having a hard time with what is going on and the Arrival DLC massacre, ... . And renegade Shepard just sleeping like a little baby with all that.
But those are dreams for ME4 :P.

I think people only cry in ME2. I can't recall a single instance where tears are visible on anyone in ME3... then again, most conversations don't zoom on people's faces like the last game. It's Zaeed-esque.

I'm pretty sure that's as close to crying as it gets in ME3. I'm pretty sure Tali cries if you side with the Geth, but you don't really see it behind the mask.

It's probably rare because somebody out there'd be completing on how big of a wuss Shepard is. "Why do I care about a murdered kid so much?" "Why do I wake up in the middle of the night thinking about my squadmate who died on Virmire?"

Yeah, yeah. Don't get me wrong.

I don't want Shepard crying about all the bad things happening all the time. She would never get a pause. I am more curious if male Shep has a similar scene where he cries in the existing game?

Steve Cortez, when listening to his husband's recording.

That was the one moment I wanted in the trilogy... but, I have to romance Thane... Crap, that save is gone, along with my old PS3... Darn it! The one thing that I wanted, and I can't even experience it, at this time!

Even the Unreal Engine couldn't resist crying for Thane.

Are you kidding? He's a man.

I did all the crying on his behalf.

Yep Fem shep definite cries in this scene. Steve Cortez cries when recalling his lost love. Also in Leviathan Ann Bryson cries over her father's death when you visit her back at the apartment after rescuing her.

But yeah, this is the only time Shep sheds tears, which I'm thankful for actually. Don't get me wrong I'm glad Shepard cried in this scene. It was appropriate. She loved Thane and he was dead, but I wouldn't want Shepard crying over things that didn't have the same emotional weight on her. Besides I, as the player, do enough of the crying for both of us (Tuchanka, Legion and Tai on Rannoch, etc).

When Shepard realizes Anderson is dead there's definitely a crinkle in his brow...no water works though.

I think Bioware got it right.

The reason you don't see Shepard cry more often is because he or she is supposed to be a combat leader. They are supposed to exude a quite confidence and remain composed, no matter what the enemy throws at them. That's just part of who Shepard is.

Now that isn't to say that Shepard should be an unfeeling automaton. Rather that Bioware got it right in most instances by having Shepard's emotions be reflected through subtle facial expressions or the tone of his or her voice. Take Thane's death scene in the hospital on a non-LI playthrough. No tears were necessary. We can hear Shepard's grief in the tone of his or her voice and see it on his or her face.

Although a lot of people didn't like the dream sequences, I also thought they were a better way to show that the war was taking its toll than having Shepard break down and cry. Whether or not you liked the execution, the idea was better.
