It's hard to think of the recent EA issues and not see this as related.

Let's try to keep the thread away from EA bashing for a few pages at least.

It has less to do with the recent issues as it has with EA's consistent quarter-over-quarter year-over-year under-guidance market performance. That's the long and the short of it. Those saying it's because of SimCity are mistaken. They didn't fire him when the stock was under 12 points a share, why would they do it when it's at 18 points a share?

EA took a swan dive in stocks after the 2008 crash(along with nearly everyone else).

Lemme find that CleverNoobs video...

Is The Gaming Industry Crashing?

I was talking specifically about EA's stock price in July of 2012 of under $11, while today it is actually trading after-hours at above $19. July of last year was when noted analysts talked specifically about how Riccitiello should be fired. I was not referring to the credit crisis of 2007-2009.

When you are six hours into playing Battlefield and you run out of ammo in your clip, and we ask you for a dollar to reload, you're really not very price sensitive at that point in time.

A consumer gets engaged in a property, they might spend 10,20,30,50 hours on the game and then when they're deep into the game they're well invested in in. We're not gouging, but we're charging and at that point in time the commitment can be pretty high.

But it is a great model and I think it represents a substantially better future for the industry.

This is the hero gaming industry is losing. Fück you, goodbye.

That sounds horrible! Buying a full game and not being nickel and dimed! Good thing EA took care of that.

No doubt, but he has presided over a litany of PR disasters and underperforming releases.  Sooner or later that is going to be reflected in sales and stock prices.

Sounds to me like he was "asked" to step down and didn't do it on his own. Now, for god's sake choose someone who KNOWS what gamers want and who changes EA for everyone's benefit.
I hope they don't put another suit who doesn't give a damn about anything but the profit and loss statements.

Don't be ridiculous, they already know what gamers want. Gamers want micro transactions and endless social media tie ins.

When's the end of EA's current fiscal quarter, icecream? Wonder if that might reveal a tipping point for Riccitiello's resignation.

If anything this is bad news for BioWare if you ask me. Riccitiello was one of their big supporters and boosters.

The Bioware of before is dead, this is a totally different Bioware than the one before. So *shrugs*

The stock price has gone up the past 3 months. This would contradict your statement. If they wanted him out because of PR disasters and underperforming releases, they would have ousted him in or around July of last year when the stock was at an all-time low.

End of March. Somebody I know very well has told me that he's resigning because the company simply didn't meet the internal targets that they set a year ago.

I wouldn't disagree with that but I see even more of the parent company forcing in some dubious things than what I feel may have happened in the past.  BioWare still has great talent but I worry moreso about the autonomy and will to say no to any ridiculous suggestions from marketing.

RIP in peace John Ravioli

For the love of everything, I hope Peter Moore doesn't take over somewhere down the line.

Peter Moore will be the new CEO, he's on the same agenda the shareholders want that Riccitiello failed to achieve.

His resignation letter is now posted and basically says as much.

However, it currently looks like we will come in at the low end of, or slightly below, the financial guidance we issued in January, and we have fallen short of the internal operating plan we set one year ago. EA’s shareholders and employees expect better and I am accountable for the miss.

That's what I'm afraid of.  At any rate, things can't really get worse from my perspective.  There is a teeny-tiny possibility that they'll get better though.

I read the email. I just wasn't sure if it was public or not, and didn't want to step on any legal toes.

Let's keep the company bashing and swearing out of the discussion, please. We can disagree with each other without being nasty about it. Thank you.

i believe this is the opportunity an time for EA to look at themselves in the mirror, do they continue what they have been doing or do they change? i guess the next appointment may show us what direction they see for themselfs.

Needless to say i guess change of some sort will probably happen somewhere

Of course we do...  I'm going to say that probably little will change with their current plan. The CEO was only one man, I'm pretty sure if the shareholders wanted things changed they would have done something about it long ago.

That video is biased as hell.
1) The author talks about a downfall of industry but his arguments are almost exclusively tied to one company.
2) He talks about cherishing good, old experience, blames EA and praises Valve. He kind of forgets to mention that Valve's last solid SP game was made in 2007 and everything else from that point has been multiplayer or co-op with (cosmetic) micro-transactions. Which is basically something what he criticises about EA. I won't even comment his statement that Steam is just a minor element behind Valve's success.
3) He warns viewers that console next-gen will use DRM and how horrifying it will be to purchase a game again if you want to play it with your friend at home. He forgets about Steam's "play on one PC" DRM again. Of course, Origin is the bad guy here. And the preowned argument... Don't get me started.

The idea of parallel to 1983 was interesting, though.

Finally some good news about EA! So glad to see John Riccitello stepping down. That man personified everything that was wrong with EA. Hopefully someone much smarter and more adept to the needs/wants of gamers will take his place.

EA sent an offer to Kotick

:P

I'm not expecting anything revolutionary from the interim CEO or the next guy.

This, though it would be interesting if one of the docs took the reins.
